Introduction
The nation states of the world have an important responsibility of providing a decent
standard of living to its people. This includes the welfare aspect of the citizens of the country.
Welfarism means that the economic, political, social and the cultural integrity of the people are
maintained at a level which is found to be acceptable to the majority of the people living in that
territorial integrity (Owen 2018). One of the cultural aspects of any nation state is that of the
sporting and the entertainment events which are organized by the different governing bodies of
the country. The history of such sporting events is found to date back to the days of the ancient
Rome when the sport of gladiator was organized (Bishop 2017). The purpose of this paper is to
understand the organization of such gladiatorial sports within the frame work of ancient Rome.
In this regard, the rules and regulations of the game have been explained in the paper.
Furthermore, the impact of the staging of the games and their arenas has also been analyzed in
this paper.
Gladiator games in ancient Rome
The term ‘gladiator’ is a Latin word whose literal translation means a ‘swordsman’
(Matthews 2019). In the context of the ancient Rome, such gladiators were seen in the light of an
armed combatant who had the obligation of entertaining the onlookers of the Roman Empire.
The gladiators engaged in a violent and bloody confrontations with each other, condemned
criminals of the society and often times, with wild animals. A few of such gladiators took part in
the sports willingly, risking their own economic and social standing in the community (Cyrino
2018). This is due to the reason that in the event they failed a match, they would be looked down
upon and scorned by the members of their own society. However, much of these gladiators
