GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS
CASE STUDY 1: GLOBAL FOOD CRISES A SILENT TSUNAMI OF NEW
DEMANDS?
Key Facts to be considered –
The continuous rise in the price of food in recent years that went up to 75% on an average
in the last decades
The conflicting reasons for the food price inflation wherein some experts side with the
supply shortage while other experts side with demand shortage.
The supply side experts blame factors such as urbanization, natural calamities, neglect of
agriculture whereas the demand side experts blame global population rise, change of
dietary habits in emerging economies and so on.
The US and other European countries have blamed China and India for rise on food
prices because of their changing dietary habits from vegetables to meat.
Alternatives available to the decision makers –
The use of good bio-fuels has been sought as an alternative by experts to tackle the issue
of global food crises, as it would enable people to use bio-fuels without having to
compromise on their crops,
Better objective could be accomplished by transforming the rapidly growing algae across
the countries into the better alternatives if bio-fuels.
Some consider global price rise in food production as a monetary phenomena and hence,
the food crises could only be addressed by addressing the monetary issues in the
countries.

GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS
It has been found by some that contradictory to popular belief; rising food inflation has
helped reduce the global food crises. They argue that the net sellers of food are benefitted
by the rising price and these net sellers belong to the poor class.
Recommendations to be given –
It could be recommended that the farmers and other poor people who are suffering from
the global food crises be given the opportunity to come up with proper solutions.
It is also recommended that the farmers be given major autonomy in deciding whether
they want to use bio-fuels or not. They should be given the autonomy to make their own
choice regarding farming techniques and technologies.
It is further recommended that facilities for communication and transport be improved for
the farmers to reduce price variation in different geographies.
It is also recommended that the developing and underdeveloped countries be allowed
space and time to think over their policies and procedures regarding food production.
Recommendations not to be given –
It could not be recommended that the world leaders should engage in fruitless debate over
what is the main reason for the global food crises. They should not waste their time
blaming the eating pattern of other countries.
It must also not be recommended that the food price inflation be taken as a positive factor
just because majority of rural households are net food producers.
It is also not to be recommended that the use of bio-fuels be increased in developing
countries because although it helps in fertility of the soil, it also results in massive hike in
food prices.
