This essay explores the multifaceted impact of globalization on employment relations, focusing on two key questions: the effect of globalization on employment relations in different countries and the relevance of national labor market institutions. Globalisation, work and employment
Major essay:
This essay builds on the conceptual work undertaken in the first essay and applies it to a particular
problem.
Students will write an answer to ONE of these four questions:
1. Evaluate the impact of globalisation on employment relations in any two countries usually defined
as belonging to a different ‘variety of capitalism’.
2. Assess the claim that 'national labour market institutions are no longer very important'.
3. Assess the claim that 'employment relations across the globe are becoming more Americanised'.
4. Choose any aspect of employment relations and compare it between two 'varieties of capitalism'.
How well does the 'varieties' framework explain the differences and/or similarities you observe?
Assessment Criteria
The essay deals with all the ULOs and PLOs for this unit as it draws together the learning thus far. The
assessment criteria are that the essay:
1. Shows that you have read and researched widely.
2. Shows that you have properly summarised the relevant evidence and arguments.
3. Demonstrates the capacity to analyse the material which the essay describes; that is to say, the
essay is theoretically-informed.
4. References sources properly, according to the essay guide.
5. Clearly answers the set question.
6. Synthesises all these requirements into a logical and coherent essay.
Feedback –
The marker will provide written feedback in terms of the assessment criteria above. The unit
coordinator will provide general feedback to the class so that each student can contextualise her/his
own performance. He will also speak to students about individual performance. As this is the final
essay, the focus of the feedback will be on content knowledge as students begin to prepare for the
examination.
Remarks:
I prefer to choose between the first question and the second question.
For the first question, it is important to define what is globalization. Lecturer mentioned that
globalisation is really about those connections which could be defined in one or more ways: the
movement of firms, money, labour, goods (ie trade) between countries.
For the second question, make sure you define how things are changing: that is, what is happening
over time to make national institutions more or less important than they were
And make sure you say what you mean by national institutions. Which ones do you want to talk
about - governments, unions, local companies? You can do this however you like but make sure
you tell us in the essay what you want to do. You could do more than one institution. The

important thing is explaining what you are doing and then to stay on that issue, whether it is one,
two or three institutions.
Please tell me which questions you have chosen as soon as possible
The word limit is 2000 words but the reference list at the end of the essay is included in the word
limits as well.
Since my last essay was not good. My lecturer suggests me to send him an introduction of the essay
first and then he will give me some recommendation.
Therefore, I need to have an essay plan about the essay and the introduction of the essay before 7th
October.
Please use simple English rather than an extremely academic one.
