Question 1
Some people argue that globalization is making the world “flat.” Others say it is making the
world more “lumpy.” Explain the difference between these two perspectives.
Globalization has led to the spread of the economic activities from the places regarded as the
“Centre” to other regions or countries. This is because in the cases of geography approach there
is an increased return which is caused by the agglomeration of the activities which takes place at
the Centre. It is interesting to note that even as the activity continues to spread out, it will remain
prone cluster. It is therefore believable that such developments are inherently “lumpy” In
contrary, one would argue that the world becoming flat is the metaphoric description of how
much globalization has contributed in the creation of relatively level playing ground for the
competition in terms of economy. In fact through globalized technology like the use of the
internet, the ability to have cooperation and corporate competition held transnationally has been
enhanced.
Question 2
Explain how the Bretton Woods agreement has contributed to globalization
The Bretton Wood Institution which includes World Bank, HIPC and IMF has played very
significant roles in making globalization better. The primary objective of creating this institution
was to help in the restoration as well as sustenance of the benefits of the global integration. This
has been achieved through promotion of the international economic cooperation. In the present
set, these institutions pursue common objectives which broadly-shared prosperity but within their
respective mandates. The World Bank has been concentrating on the investments of long-term
projects, building of the institutions and on other issues which are basically social including

environmental conservation and poverty management. IMF has been focusing on the functioning
or operation of the international monetary system. This goes along with the promotion of the
sound macroeconomic policies which is considered as a precondition for sustaining economic
growth. The HIPC has advocated for the international trade liberalization which has intentionally
promoted globalization.
Question 4
Explain how the production and consumption of vegetables, fruit, and/or grains can be linked
to the four forces discussed in Geography 1050. Do not discuss meat or dairy products
Globalization has both direct and indirect influence on the food habits as well as patterns of
dietary in most parts of the world particularly in the urban areas. Through globalization
processes, the free movement of the vegetables and fruits among other commodities has been
increased. These categories of food have become available readily on the supermarkets. Their
consumptions have equally increased very significantly making the demand and thus production
is higher. Also globalization is affecting the income of the people as well as their livelihoods
which in turn affects both the production and consumption (purchase) of the vegetables and fruits
.
Question 5
Geographers are concerned with “space” and “location.” Citing examples, explain how any
one of the four forces discussed in Geography 1050 is currently having an influence on the
Geography of Newfoundland and Labrador
Document Page
The changes in climate have had significant impact on the economies, people and environment
of Newfoundland and Labrador. The temperatures are increasingly rising and Newfoundland and
Labrador is already experiencing 1.5 degrees rise in temperature than what used to be historical
average temperatures. In fact in some areas the temperatures can be even 4 degrees centigrade
warmer. There has been increase in the temperatures of the seas surfaces. Although there has
been increase in the temperatures of the sea surfaces regionally, there has been high increase in
the past three decades due to changes in the climate. Some of this obvious change is already
evident in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Question 6
Explain how the occurrence and spread of cholera can be linked to the four forces discussed
in Geography 1050.
Flooding which results from the changes of climate has been responsible for sweeping
away pit latrines and damaging the sewage system thereby contaminating the clean water
for and other consumable foods. Subsequently cholera is spread
Prolonged drought has been linked to the spread of cholera. When there is shortage of
water, the level of hygiene will go down hence leading to the spread of cholera.
Occurrence of earthquakes results into the destruction of the sewer system and
subsequently leading to the contamination of clean water which later results into the
spread of cholera.
Global warming has led to melting of ice which has in turn led to the increase in the sea
water level that drowns constructed water pipes leading to pollution and cholera spread.
