Goonyella Riverside Mine History

Goonyella Riverside Mine is a large open cut coal mine in Central Queensland, Australia. It started operation in 1971 and has undergone several changes in ownership and management over the years. The mine produces metallurgical coal and has a significant production output, with 12.4 million tonnes of coal produced in the year to July 2014. The mine uses various equipment such as excavators, draglines, drills, roof bolters, long wall miners, rock dusters, and shuttle cars. The resources and reserves of the mine are also reported according to US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) standards.

Goonyella Riverside Mine

History
Goonyella Riverside is a large open cut coking coal mine in the Bowen Basin. It is one of the
many coal mines in Central Queensland and is located at Moranbah about 30 Km north of the
township.
1971 Goonyella Mine commenced operation,
owned by CQCA joint ventures, managed by
Utah Development Co.
1982 Riverside Mine commenced operation, owned
by Thiess Dampier Mitsui, managed by BHP
1984 BHP purchased Utah International Inc., thus
major interest in both Goonyella and
Riverside
1989 CQCA’s Goonyella and BHP Mitsui’s
Riverside Mines management amalgamated,
to give improved operation while retaining
separate ownership
2000 Formal adoption of One Mine Plan enabling
optimum use of all site resources – people,
equipment and coal
2001 Formation of BHP Billiton Mitsubishi
Alliance; Owner of Goonyella and manager
of Riverside

Production Output
The mine produced 12.4Mta of metallurgical coal in the year to July 2014, and output in the
current financial would not affected by the contract termination (Harvey,2015). Emily Perry said
that any potential production impact for 2015 will be reported by the organization in quarterly
production reports at time.

As per the view of Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is considered that the mining industry should
consists of five major segments like coal mining, non-metal mineral mining, metal ore mining,
gas and oil extracting and supporting activities such as resource transportation. Equipment are

Rock Dusters use to spray inert mineral dust over highly
flammable coal dust
Shuttle Cars use electric-powered shuttle cars to transport
coal from the coal bed to safer points in the
mine

and Exchange Commission (SEC) standards and have been determined in accordance with SEC
