1. Define the following terms:
1.1 Statistics - Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization,
analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. In applying statistics to a scientific,
industrial, or social problem, it is conventional to begin with a statistical population or
a statistical model to be studied.
1.2 Descriptive Statistics - Descriptive statistics are used to describe the basic features of
the data in a study. They provide simple summaries about the sample and the measures.
Together with simple graphics analysis, they form the basis of virtually every quantitative
analysis of data.
1.3 Prediction - a thing predicted; a forecast.
1.4 Nominal Variable - A nominal variable is another name for a categorical
variable. Nominal variables have two or more categories without having any kind of
natural order.
1.5 Ordinal Variable - Ordinal variable is a type of measurement variable that takes
values with an order or rank. It is the 2nd level of measurement and is an extension of the
nominal variable.
1.6 Interval Variable - The interval variable is a measurement variable that is used to
define values measured along a scale, with each point placed at an equal distance from
one another. It is one of the 2 types of numerical variables and is an extension of the
ordinal variable.
1.7 Ratio Scale - The ratio variable is one of the 2 types of continuous variables, where
the interval variable is the 2nd. It is an extension of the interval variable and is also the
peak of the measurement variable types.
1.8 Inferential Statistics - Inferential statistics is one of the two main branches
of statistics. Inferential statistics use a random sample of data taken from a population to
describe and make inferences about the population.
1.9 Dependent Variable - is the effect. Its value depends on changes in the independent
variable.
1.10 Independent Variable - is the cause. Its value is independent of other variables in
your study.
2. Statistical knowledge helps you use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct
analyses, and effectively present the results. Statistics is a crucial process behind how we make
discoveries in science, make decisions based on data, and make predictions.
3. Independent variable: The type of light the tomato plant is grown under

are the possible sampling frames for this study?
Answer: I will gather potential respondents by getting data from Philippine Statistics Office. I
need to know the total number of people that I can consider as my of my research. By doing so, it
will be more easier for me to gather information because I have a baseline data already.
2. You have been asked to interview 10,000 people in total. Consider what would happen if you
undertook a simple random survey....... Of these 10,000 you might, for example, have to
interview 2 people in NCR, 3 in the R -III, a dozen scattered across the R - IV, and so on. As this
is uneconomic, both in terms of time and money, it would be considered more efficient to
undertake a Multi-stage Cluster Sample. Think of some ways in which you could divide the
country up into progressively smaller sections to undertake this type of sample.
Answer: First draw sample of areas. Initially large areas selected then progressively smaller areas
within larger area are sampled. Eventually end up with sample of households and use method of
selecting individuals from these selected households.

Answer: The group of respondents that would be over-presented are the participants in the bar of
students organization and the group of respondents that would be under-presented are the
potential respondents outside the said event.
4. Can you think of some ways in which you might draw attention to your project when looking
for a self-selected sample? What do you suppose is the main disadvantage of self-selection?
Answer: To get the attention of the potential respondents or participants for my project, I need to
create interactive and attractive posters for promotion. The main disadvantage of self-selection is
that they may be biased on some of the survey questionnaires.
