Part 1: Initial Reflection
The Great War is also known as First World War, a clash which is made globally in
1914-18 is entangling the majority of various countries of Europe along with US,
Russia , Middle East and with various districts throughout the places. The conflict are
raised in central powers - including Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey - against the
Allies - basically France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United
States. It finished with the loss of the Central Powers. The conflict was practically
phenomenal in the butcher, bloodletting, and obliteration it caused. The First World War
was also called the Great War consisted/included more than thirty countries and brought
the death of about millions of young fellows. This book has rejuvenated history as it
shows the fortunes of a group of youth conscripts/recruits and volunteers to find what
life was truly like in the trenches and how they adapted to the horrors of the front line.
The book is exceptionally strong and truly great for somebody like me who maybe lacks
opportunity and willpower to commit to an extensive verifiable novel however is glad to
peruse a very much wrote realistic book regarding the matter of the 'Great' War. This
book has made me realise many things about the history of Great War, it is not just a
history book it is a journey into another age.
Part 2: Character Study
A teenage Serbian militant whose name is Gavrilo Princip has assassinated
Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on Jun 28, 1914. During the time of war the Princip
was trained and armed by a group of Serbian terrorist and the name of this group is
Black hand. The assassination of Ferdinand is highly focused on opening short of world
war first. Princip participate in war from prison where he died of tuberculosis in 1918.
The narrator utilized the experiences of British Tommy George Smith along with Somme
in the trenches for putting a human face on the wider images of events in different
theatres on the war. It facilitates mostly the almost-accidental assassination of Archduke
Franz Ferdinand, after that he went to sea battles and tally land, the exploits of T.E.
Lawrence (of Arabia) and other iconic figures. It also covered the technological updates
, from poison gas to tanks, and various types of distinctive programs such as the

scene after seeing of muddy misery, sodden and bullet blasting into the bodies of
soldier and fields strewn with corpses. At home and in behind the lines it is rarely seen
that and though other participants are visited for few panels occasionally, the point of
view is so Anglo-centric that the German and even Russian sides merit barely a glance.
Most of the statistics and various figures are mentioned in the text, and with help of
various matters which includes notes on a animal “heroes” and Croix de Guerre–
winning homing pigeon. This kind of book mainly explains different kinds of war scenes
and also represents that which kind of effect is faced by the soldiers.

My dear Mother,
I recently got through a special period which is frightful. We all reached to trenches on
Wednesday in night and in Sunday morning at exact 5am our Artillery started besieging
the German trenches and following 10-20 minutes had passed and then we reached to
the railing. Wow what a gathering the Huns had coming up for us, they just cleared the
ground with automatic weapon discharge and shrapnel but before that many of our men
have died. I was in the middle of the war and it was difficult for me to take cover so I
used crump-hole from where I could see many of our members to fight and from there I
was terrified but have the strength to take back fight. It also identify difficult for making
any development in our quarter of blighty, so I dug myself in and anticipated occasions.
It is highly terrible tension, as I appeared to be the man immaculate, surrounding me,
and being by and by familiar with each man exacerbated the situation, as a matter of

In early evening I hailing from the trench concerning if it was workable for me for getting
back. I answered in the positive and chose to getting risk pruned on the way. After that I
started I started slithering on my stomach until around a couple of yards from the railing,
after, at that point, made a spring and surged head-first beyond preposterous, almost

and provide medical support. We were feeling significantly better that evening, yet a

18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper scopes of the Somme, a stream in
France. The fight was expected for rushing a triumph for Allies. Multiple million men took
on in the conflict and 1,000,000 men were injured or died, creating it perhaps of the
deadliest fight in mankind's set of experiences.
The British and the French had conceded to a hostile on the Somme at the time of
conference of Chantillly in December 1915. The Allies settled with a procedure of joined
obligations against the Central Powers in 1916 by Russian, French, Italian and British
armed forces, with the Somme hostile as the Franco-British commitment. Beginning
plan required the armed forces of French for attempt the primary piece of the Somme
hostile, upheld on northern flank from Fourth Army of British Expeditionary Force (BEF).
At the point when the Imperial German Army started the Battle of Verdun on the Meuse
on 21 February 1916, French authorities redirected a considerable lot about divisions
expected for the Somme and the "assisting" assault by the British turned into the
primary exertion. The British soldiers on the Somme involved a combination of
remaining parts of the pre-war armed force, the Kitchener's Army and Territorial Force,
a power of wartime volunteers.
In principle day on the Somme (1 July) the German second Army experienced a
huge loss inverse the French Sixth Army, from Foucaucourt-en-Santerre south of the
Somme to Maricourt on the north bank and by the Fourth Army from Maricourt to the
area of the Albert-Bapaume street. The 57,470 losses endured from British, including
19,240 died, are the most awful throughout the entire existence of British Army. The
greater part of British setbacks was experienced in front between the Albert-Bapaume
Street and Gommecourt toward the north, which was the region where the central
German guarded exertion (Schwerpunkt) are created. This fight became remarkable for
the significance regarding air power and the main utilization of tanks in September yet
these are result for new innovation and extremely questionable.
Toward the finish of the fight, British and French powers had entered 6 mi (10 km)
into German-involved region along most of the front, their biggest regional addition
starting from the First Battle of the Marne in 1914. The functional goals of the Anglo-
French armed forces were unfulfilled, as they neglected to catch Péronne and

holding a post of lecturer in the School of History teaching postgraduate and
undergraduate military history modules Mario teaches a topic in wide range within
military history, particularly on the British army experience in the 20th century. His book
provides detail of the Third Republican Franco-British Army and the war of Somme. It
described all the details of the war and what losses or victories were gained by the
British troops. Mario has research interests in broad manner which includes British, Irish
and European military history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore, I felt justified is
giving them four out of four.
Part 5: Individual Reflection
I understood many things from the above report. I have obtained a lot of knowledge
about the World War One and I obtained the experiences of our heroes on the following.
I came across many new things like that were the people involved and what they did,
how the war heroes fought. I understood about problems they faced during the war and
experiences they gained during this time. I learnt to write letter and how the letters are
written by the soldiers along with the description of war. I used secondary sources data
and have developed a critical means of assessing the use of this data in assignments. I
have learnt many things altogether in this assignment which helped me to gain many
skills and knowledge for improving my learning throughout the journey.
