Green Technology in Sustainable Construction
Sustainability is a key factor in today’s construction activities because of the impacts that
these activities have on social, economic and environmental aspects of human life (Yu,
Wiedmann, Crawford, & Tait, 2017). In the context of this research proposal, sustainability
is the phenomenon of not depleting natural resources or being harmful to the environment and
ensuring cost effectiveness during the lifecycle of a structure without compromising its quality
(Yilmaz & Bakis, 2015). One of the fundamental factors affecting sustainability is carbon
emissions hence the need to reduce carbon emissions cannot be overemphasized. These
emissions have significantly contributed to one of the major global challenges today – climate
change. Construction industry is among the largest contributors of global carbon emissions
(Arioglu, Dhavale, & Sarkis, 2017). For this reason, any study that will provide useful
information on how to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry is worthwhile. The
main aim of this research proposal is to determine various methodologies and practices that can
be used to minimize carbon emissions and help achieve sustainability in the construction
industry.
This proposal comprises of several sections. An overview of these sections is as follows:
introduction section that will provide details of the research proposal, its scope and the
significance of conducting it; Aim, objectives and research questions section; literature review
section that will include comprehensive details of the current state of carbon emissions in the
construction industry and previous studies that have been conducted by other researchers on the
various strategies and practices that can help reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainability
in the construction industry; methodology section that will provide details of the various methods
to be used in collecting relevant data and analyzing the data so as to answer the research
