market. If company has a good image in the market then it can easily grab attention of investors,
employees and customers. Hillary, (2017), argued that company offers different incentives for the
business to grow. They provide subsidies, exemption, tax holidays, financial assistant and other

expanding business. Business growth helps competition in an effective manner not only at national
level but also at international. There are various brands in the market and therefore, for growth,
company needs to undertake expansion and diversification to face stiff competition in an efficient
manner (Lee, Sameen and Cowling, 2015).

it can easily make good position in the competitive market and gain success for longer period of

be measured by company in the form of qualitative features such as goodwill, quality of product,

governmental regulation, law and legislation business can improve its performance in the market
and securely conduct and carry out its functions and activities. With help of governmental
regulation and legislation, company can provide protection of employees rights and keep secure
and safe its business activities and function. However, the changes in the legislation directly affect
the operation of business. In addition to this, company have to make changes within the business
activities according to the changing policies, legislation and practices.
According to the view of Bull and et.al., (2016) supply chain operational capability is
another major challenge that can affect the growth and development in the small and medium size
of organization. The obtaining and inventory network administration is a procedure of outlining,
arranging, executing, controlling and checking of production network exercises so as to make wager
esteem, focused framework and synchronizing supply with request and estimating execution of
business. In other word one might say that inventory network administration is a procedure of
conveying the correct item and administrations, at the ideal time, at the opportune place and at the
correct cost of client.
In the present time, there has been changed the process and activities of supply chain
management. Due to the changes in the procedure of supply chain management, company have to
adopt effective procedure and practices. Thus, it can be said that supply chain affects the growth
and performance of business in the small and medium size of the company. In addition to this, with
help of high quality and advanced system of supply chain management, company can improve the
effectiveness and quality of the business.
Internal environment that create barrier in growth of SME
According to Agwu and Murray (2018) Lack of capital is the another major barrier or
lacking point that might be impactful on the behaviour of business activities. That also grow up the
business activities and long lasting performance that impact on the business behavioural growth.
That also affect the business activities and this makes long lasting and effective and long
effectiveness. Small business are mostly facing difficulty to encourage the long lasting
performance making task. It was hard to attract investors towards the small business suggested by
Bouazza, Ardjouman and Abada, (2015). Investors requires strong and productive idea and
creativity in the business. It brings new effective task oriented process and skill burning
performance making task
According to Burns (2016) Poor procedures is the another barrier in small scale business
that gives the major goals and objective performance work. This poor performance might be
decrease capacity level of the business. It also brings the new management goals and task oriented
performance in terms of quality and quantity.
As per the Fraser, Bhaumik and Wright, (2015) Small businesses also facing the issues
regarding Lack of managerial skill due to which they cannot assists their customers into proper
manner. It brings the new challenging and impactful growth manner. This makes the proper
implementing process that makes the proper implementing process task. Due to lack of training
needs to employees company facing the lack of performance that gives negative impact on the
behaviour of customers.
Ignoring Risk is might be become dangerous for the company suggested by Krasniqi, and
Mustafa (2016). To reduce risk company needs to make the contingency plans and strategies that
makes the proper guidelines and growth suggested by Paul, Parthasarathy and Gupta (2017).
Ignoring risk might be affected in the long term business activities. For that, company requires
taking the approachable task oriented business plan in order to meet the needs and large making
performance. And making good skills and wants.
Alternative finance proposal and support, advice and resources is the factor to consider for growth
of the firm.
Alternative finance and support resources are the essential requirement in the organisations
suggested by Prajogo and McDermott (2014). Under which small business organisation sometimes
fails to access the capital immediately. So it becomes the big problems for the company owners.

Alternative finance proposal is the long term relationship between the long term growth it makes
the proper implementing process to attain the better resources to achieve the organisation objectives
and goals. In current market position rational banking system help to access the capital in
systematic manner. Overall, it makes the negative impact on the overall behaviour of business
activities that are faced by the company growth. Besides, River Island requires adopting the best
approaching task oriented approaches in order to meet the needs of the organisation. Overall, it
brings new better affecting long lasting performance that makes the better effective growth
suggested by Sekaran and Bougie (2016).
According to the view of Dodgson, (2018) opening up SME lead to access to public
procurement and considered as one of the most direct way in which government lead to support
small medium enterprise. For the efforts to encourage small business so that they hire new
employees and pursue growth, the government announce that in UK every company would be liable
to pay £2,000 employment allowance. Hence, this allowance enables most of the small business to
minimise their national insurance contributions and in most of the cases they may assist to pursue
their ambitions. If the issue is related to the SME is known as access to finance. Further Ward,
(2016) state that in order to grow business successfully it is important to trained the staff so that
they can focus on providing wide range of services to customers. Along with this, employees should
know the way of using new technologies so that they can easily carry out their work in an effective
manner.
Conclusion
From the above literature review chapter, it is concluded that there are numerous reasons but
usually comes down to an inability to remain a low cost leader against the competition. Growing
revenues is another challenge that affects the organisation. The issue can’t be explained in explicit
manner by single root cause as revenue challenges are generally specific to the business itself.

CHAPTER -3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
Research methodology is considered as one of the important chapter in the dissertation
because it covers different tools and techniques used for the present research. It is known as one of
the effective way which help in providing specific salutation for the presented issues in the research.
Different tools and techniques covered in this chapter such as data collection, data analysis, research
design etc. In this section different methods are being employed for gaining evidence. All the tools
and techniques used within the study will be explained in detail with the valid justification.
3.2 Research philosophy
Research philosophy is known as the method in which cover all the principal through which
all the information can be collected and analysed. It is considered as one of the important
components in research methods (Abidin, Rusli and Khan, 2016). One of the main motive of the
research is to conduct the study with the goal of accomplishing the desired results. Thus, it is
considered as one of the important form of carrying out research in an effective manner.
Epistemology is known as the brand of the research philosophy which consider the nature and scope
of knowledge. Along these lines, it helps in procuring enquiry about the particular kind of learning
upon particular subject to be accomplished. Epistemology portrays that data is considered as
substantial inside every novel circumstance and it doesn't differentiate from situation to condition
(Kalra, Phadnis and Joshi, 2017). Prevalently there are two sorts of research philosophy, for
instance, positivism and interpretivism. These both techniques for understanding are varying from
each other and thusly helps in finishing the research. Positivism analyse insinuates that it helps in
assuming that the fact of the matter is of stable nature which could be either show and saw from the
viewpoint of investigation objectives. On the other side, interpretivism rationale could be described
as for the most part not sensible to assemble data and information in connotation with knowledge
related to the specific topic.
The present research is based on investigating the growth challenges faced by SME while
expanding business in a retail sector., therefore interpretivism philosophy has been applied by the
scholar. It will assist in selecting qualitative set of data in respect to inspect the study. Along with
this it aids in understanding growth challenges that can impact River Island. Hence, it can be said
that interpretivism philosophy emphasise on collecting important information and gain suitable
findings which help in gaining important information related to overcome the growth challenges
(Landau, Mitnik and Lev-Ari, 2016).
3.3 Research approach
The idea of research approach can be alluded to as the way in which the expert leads the

(Landau, Mitnik and Lev-Ari, 2016).
3.3 Research approach
The idea of research approach can be alluded to as the way in which the expert leads the
examination forward. It is specified as the arrangement that enhances the legitimacy of the research
to a righter direction (Hwang, and Anzai, 2016). There are two sorts of approaches which can be
considered by the scholar such as inductive and deductive. Inductive approach is known as
inductive reasoning which lead to start with observation and theories which are proposed towards
the end of the research process. It leads to start with the detailed observation of the world which
lead to moves towards generalisation ideas. On the other side deductive approach is that which
concern is to develop a hypothesis based on existing theory. Basically, it is concern with the
deducting conclusion from premises (Mammen, Norton and Butz, 2016). The present research is
based on investigation the growth challenges faced by SME while expanding business in a retail
sector therefore inductive approach has been selected by the scholar. Reason for selecting this
approach is that it is linked with the qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. Along with
this it works in such as manner that first researcher focusses on specific observation to broader
generalisation and theories. Inductive approach is flexible because in this investigator do not follow
any predetermine information.
3.4 Types of research
This reflects that kind of research which is being conducted. There are two types of research
types that can be consider by the scholar that are qualitative and quantitative (Muriana and Vizzini,
2017). At the time of conducting thematic tool the qualitative research type can be applied. It can be
undertaken at the time when researcher need to address the behaviour of population covered in the
study. In contrast to this, quantitative research type is considered as the time when entire research
is need to be carried out on the basis of numerical form. It is considered as a way through which
researcher can gain valid outcome. In addition to this, it facilitate the scholar to conduct the research
in well mannered. The aim of present thesis is to investigate the growth challenges faced by SME
while expanding business in a retail sector therefore, qualitative tool has been applied (Raynor,
Ayubcha and Alavi, 2017). Due to this reason it make utilisation of thematic technique in respect to
measure the challenges which can be faced by scholar. It is effective enough in respect to make
information more reliable.
3.5 Research design
A research design is known as the set of methods and process which can be undertaken at
the time of gathering and analysing of information in respect to address the research problem.
However, there many authors who argue that research design is known as the choices of methods
among qualitative and quantitative (Attar, Haghighat. and Ghassemi, 2016). There are few
essential elements in the research design which cover research strategies and methods linked with
the data collection and evaluation.
There are different types of research design which can be considered by the scholar at the
time of conducting research such as exploratory, descriptive, explanatory etc (Médici and Allen,
considered by the scholar such as inductive and deductive. Inductive approach is known as

There are different types of research design which can be considered by the scholar at the
time of conducting research such as exploratory, descriptive, explanatory etc (Médici and Allen,
2016). exploratory research design is that which is considered with the aim of investigating
particular aspects of the research area. However, it does not provide any final or conclusive answers
based on research questions. On the other side, explanatory research design is considered as the
time when not research was conducted before on particular topic before. This type of research
design lead to focus on explaining the aspects of the study in detail. At last descriptive research
design is known as the statements of affairs because it is present with the scholar without having
any control over variable. This design is undertaken with the aim to shed lights on current issues
and problem with the process of gathering information that enable to describe the situation (Peter,
Werner and Alavi, 2017)
The present research is based on investigating the growth challenges faced by SME while
expanding business in a retail sector, therefore descriptive research design has been adopted by the
scholar. Through the help of this scholar can easily describe the characteristics of the population
which is covered in the study. Along with this, it helps in gathering in depth information which is
better as per the qualitative study (Bathelt and Glückler, 2017). The main reason for selecting this
method is that it assist in gathering large amount of information on growth challenges faced by the
River Island in the retail market.
3.5 Data collection methods
Data collection is considered as one of the important method in the entire research which
will help providing depth information on the selected topic that is investigating the growth
challenges faced by SME while expanding business in a retail sector (Cooper, Desjardins and Croll,
2016). At the time of conducting a research it is important to gather information from different
sources which help in arising valid conclusion. It will also help in making research more reliable
and valid. Two methods of data collection are primary and secondary.
In primary that information is collected which is new and not even published by any author.
It is mostly gathered at initial time in order to gain specific information on the selected topic. Tools
which can be consider for selecting such primary information are survey, interview, questionnaire
etc. It is important for the researcher to select suitable method for collecting new information as it
lead to affect the findings of the research. On the other side, secondary information is that which is
not new as they are already published in books and journals by different authors. These,
information’s are basically second hand but they are valuable in respect to support the findings of
primary research and to make it more authentic. To collect secondary information researcher can
consider, books, journals articles etc (Toye, Williamson and Lamb, 2016).
For the present research both primary as well as secondary method will be considered in
order to developing understand related to the growth challenges that can affect the River Island. In
primary information will be collected through survey method. In this, questions will be asked from
particular aspects of the research area. However, it does not provide any final or conclusive answers
based on research questions. On the other side, explanatory research design is considered as the
time when not research was conducted before on particular topic before. This type of research

12 managers of River Island. While secondary information will be collected through books,
websites, journal articles etc. Reason for selecting primary method is to gain information which is
new and specific for the present topic. it will help in understanding factors that are becoming
challenges in the growth of SME’s.
3.6 Sampling
The process which is related with the sampling is important in respect to save time and cost.
However, it is not easy for the scholar to conduct survey with the entire population (Tight, 2016).
Therefore, sampling help in providing chance to select respondents from entire population. With the
use of this approach, researcher can easily narrow down the universe into sample. In addition to
this, it is considered as strategies that help in reducing the complexity at the time of collecting the
dat. Here are two methods of sampling which can be consider by the scholar that are probabilistic as
well as non-probabilistic. In probabilistic sampling method each of the respondents is get equal
chance of being selected. Different sampling method in the probabilistic are purposive sampling,
random sampling etc. for the present research purposive sampling method will be consider by the
scholar (Creswell and Poth, 2017). Here, 12 managers of River Island are selected who provide
depth information related to the growth challenges faced by their company.
3.7 Data analysis
Data analysis is known as important aspect within the research which help in analysing the
gathered information in an effective manner (Winit‐Watjana, 2016). Researcher can easily convert
all the raw information collected from primary and secondary sources in respect to gain valid
outcome. Tow techniques of data analysis are qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative is
considered as that technique in which is all the gathered information is presented in numerical form.
There are different statistical tools which are applied such as Z-test, Chi-square test etc. On the
other side, qualitative is techniques in which researcher present the information in non-numerical
form. Several themes are prepared in this which help in analysing the information in a systematic
manner.
The present research is based on investigating the growth challenges faced by SME while
expanding business in a retail sector, therefore qualitative techniques is considered by the scholar. It
is one of the effective technique in which thematic analysis is undertaken by the scholar (Mebius,
Kennedy and Howick, 2016). Several themes are prepared on the basis of response of managers
and interoperation is done. Along with this, to support the findings different themes and charts are
prepare by the scholar that can help in presenting the findings in an effective manner.
3.8 Validity and reliability
There is high significance in respect to using different tools and methods in respect to carry
out the dissertation in an appropriate manner (Bailly and Comino, 2017). In context to this aspect
websites, journal articles etc. Reason for selecting primary method is to gain information which is

3.8 Validity and reliability
There is high significance in respect to using different tools and methods in respect to carry
out the dissertation in an appropriate manner (Bailly and Comino, 2017). In context to this aspect
reliability and validity take place while carrying out the research. In respect to raise validity and
reliability of the study, there are different types of aspects which have been undertaken by the
researcher. The aim of the scholar is to conduct study in well mannered therefore all the information
is collected from the authentic sources. The reason for doing this, is that copyright protected data
sources are considered as highly reliable information which help in getting valid outcome. Further
on secondary information which is carried out by the scholar help in reaching the aims and
objectives of the research. There are different themes have been developed on the basis of aim.
This is as aspect which reflects the suitability of the collected information (Toye,
Williamson and Lamb, 2016). All the latest books and articles are considered by the scholar for
collecting the information with the aim of gaining and developing knowledge related to the aspect
of growth challenges. Hence, it reflects that all the collected information is highly reliable and valid.
Apart from this, all the tools and techniques undertaken by the scholar are highly reliable and valid.
For the present research qualitative investigation has been selected on the basis of nature of study.
Therefore, it can be stated that all the tools and techniques are logically linked with the research
types and design to a large extent.
3.9 Research ethics
Research ethics are known as essential at the time of conducting research. The scholar
cannot carry out investigation in an effective manner without considering ethics. For the present
research the ethics which are required to be undertaken by the scholar for making research highly
effective and efficient (Peter, Werner and Alavi, 2017). At the time of conducting primary
research it is important to ensure that prior permission is taken by the River Island. Along with this
no respondent should be forced to take participate and reason for conducting survey need to be
made clear in front of them. It will help in getting appropriate opinion and views on growth
challenges faced by company. Apart from this researcher need to keep all the personal information
of respondents confidential. Further, information should be destroyed when not in use or after a
fixed period of time. On the other side, at the time of carrying out secondary research it is important
to collect information from authentic sources. While collecting information from secondary sources
it is important to ensure that all the data is not used by as it is. It may be lead to occur chances of
plagiarism. Along with this all the information is properly cited in order to make it authentic. At last
all the collected data is not shared with anyone as because it can be misused. In respect to avoid
