1.What is involved in being a successful leader
A leader is the person who is been involved in motivating people so that they can achieve their
goals and objectives. There are various traits, skills and styles. It includes the following:
Big five personality traits
Openness to experience- In accordance with Amanchukwu, Stanley and Ololube, (2015) in
order to be a successful leader, they need to have an innovative idea, curiosity, art and emotion
with them. People who are open to experience are intellectually curious, open to emotion,
sensitive to beauty and willing to try new things. High degree of openness can help the leader in
analysing and forecasting the upcoming risks and threats.
Conscientiousness- A successful leader needs to be conscientious in every situation faced by
them. If leaders are aggressive then this can hamper their work and they can also face serious
consequences. They need to pay attention to all the things said by their team members.
Extraversion- It means that for being successful leaders, they must know how to extract ideas
from other people. This can assist leader in growing. Also in this leaders needs to be enthusiastic
about their work.
Agreeableness- In accordance with Hallinger and Wang, (2015) a successful leader must agree to
the ideas given by their team members. It helps them in creating a positive relationship with their
followers.
Neuroticism- A leader must not express negative emotions to its team members. As this can
hamper the relationship between them and team members. They need to have a stable mind-set
so that they can achieve objectives easily.
Katz three skills model
As per the view of Bolden, (2016) a successful leader needs to have three skills that includes
technical, conceptual and human skills. In the technical skills a leader must have the full
knowledge of all the software’s and machines that is been used in the organization. They can
also provide training to their team members which can save their operational cost and can also
increase profitability of organization. A successful leader should also have the ability to motivate
their team members for working with new software and machines.
Human skills must also be possessing by a successful leader. In this they must have the
ability to communicate freely with other team members. Also they need to have ability analyse

the problems, needs and demands of employees working with them. For being successful a
leader must adjust to all changing environment. If they are not able to adjust with change then
this can lead to failure and can also hinder their growth aspects.
Conceptual skills mainly refer to ability to work with broad concepts an idea. A
successful leader must motivate their team members to bring creative and innovative idea. They
also need to work on them. Strategies which can be used by leaders in this can include brain
storming and open discussion with team members. This will also help them in enhancing
relationship between their team members. It can also help them growing.
Lewin’s leadership styles
As per the opinion of Hallinger and Wang, (2015) there are three leadership style such as
authoritarian, participative and delegative which can be followed by leaders in order to be
successful. In authoritarian leadership style. Leaders give the power and authority to others in
order to perform and achieve their objectives. Giving authority to others can help leaders in
developing sense of responsibility in team members.
In participative leadership, leaders motive team members to show their active
participation in all activities which is going in and out of the organization. This style can produce
more creative problem solving and innovation than the Authoritarian approach so it makes sense
to adopt it in competitive, non-emergency situations.
Delegative leadership focuses more on delegating the wider opportunities to team
members. In this employees can set their own goals and objectives can be motivated by leaders
to achieve them.

A good leadership can be developed. Leaders can work on their skills and traits in order to be
successful.
Path Goal theory- In the opinion of Amanchukwu, Stanley and Ololube, (2015) leadership can
be developed. This theory lays focus on that leaders must get engaged in motivating and
supporting their team members in achieving their goals and objectives. They must be involved in
placing right person at right job, so that employees are satisfied with the work they are doing.
This will help leaders in retaining employees in organization and they can also create employee
loyalty and belongingness by this. A successful must be involved in increasing the confidence of
their team members. They must pay full and focused attention on the health and well-being of
employees working with them. This can assist them in improving their relationship with team
members. A successful leader constantly keeps check on their employees so that they can
analyse their problems. Also path goal theory lays emphasis that leaders must be friendly and
empathetic so that they can develop a good relationship with team members working with them.
This can also assist them in sustaining workers in organization. A successful leader is one who
brings out innovative and creative techniques which can act as solution to problems. Leader must
make employees so capable that they can work at their own and achieve goals and objectives.
This will also help company in growing and increasing their market share.
Transformational leadership- As per the view of Renz, (2016) transformation leadership can
be used by leaders in order to increase the performance level of employees. This leadership

focuses on creating a vision and identify change which has been needed in organization. Leaders
in organization can be successful if they are being role model and inspiration to employees
working with them. Also leaders must involve in making employees understand about the
importance of prioritising tasks and should also make them aware about changing situations that
can occur in firm. They must be engaged in following ethical measures in order to deal with
workers properly. This can help them in creating goodwill of firm in society. It will also attract
more efficient employees towards leaders and will also sustain them. Leader must also allow
followers to bring up new ideas. A successful leader must also be open to all type of experience.
They must be transparent and conscientious. A leader must take care that everything that has
been shared by them to team members must be true. Fraud should not exist in company as it can
create negative image of leaders in mind of team members. So in these ways a successful leader
can be developed.
Situational leadership- In accordance with Thorpe, (2016) in this type of leadership, leaders
adjust according to the situation which has been faced by organization. A leader can be only
successful when they are open to all circumstances prevailing in firm. A leader can also provide
training to team members so that they are also been prepared for changes existing in firm. They
must be engaged in open communication so that self-esteem and confidence of workers is being
increased. Also leaders must provide feedback to team members about their performance. This
can help employees in enhancing their quality of work. It ultimately increases company’s
profitability and productivity. Leader can also delegate responsibility to team members so that
each and every person in team knows how to handle work responsibly. This can also enhance
quality of work done by them.

3. Distinguish leadership from management
Management can be defined as working with human, physical as well as financial
resources for accomplishing desired business objectives. It can also be referred to as procedure
of administrating as well as controlling the various business affairs. Manager is a person in an
organization who is mainly responsible for administrating people as well as different business
operation in an enterprise (Rennison, 2018). They can also be recognized as person those who
have the ability to manage resources. Example of management in firm is CEO who is mainly
responsible for taking important business decision.
Leadership is an act of leading people within an organization. It can also be defined as
capabilities of an individual to guide and guide other people at workplace. Leadership can be
considered to be as art of positively influence other people to make their significant contribution
in accomplishment of desired organizational goals. It is the procedure which also includes
directing people to cater the business need of an enterprise (Hull, 2018). Leader is a person in an
organization who guides as well as inspire other people for increasing their participation in
business activities. Example of leadership in an enterprise is supervisors, they are mainly
responsible for providing the direction as well as guidance and instruction to people.

4. Lesson learned from leadership from own experience at workplace.
I have been working as a leader in small company my role as a leader is to guide people
and to motivate workers for making the valuable contribution in achievement of desired goals.
When I joined the organization, I found there was high employee turnover. When I conducted
the interview with some of workers I found that ineffective management is considered to be as
the root cause of high staff turnover ratio. When I analyse the information I found that many of
employees in an enterprise are highly dissatisfied with the autocratic leadership style adopted by
the management. I also conducted the interview with management in order to identify the reason
for such behaviour and found that they have adopted the autocratic leadership style as they want
to bring positive changer at workplace (Podsakoff and Podsakoff, 2019.). I perceive that
leadership style adopted by leaders is not appropriate for bringing change in an organization. I
believe that democratic leadership style is best which can be utilized for bringing successful
change at workplace.
I have learned about the concept of leadership and management. By participating in module I
came to know about the difference between both leadership and management. I learned about
the different leadership as well as management style. I gained knowledge about the functions of
leaders and managers in an enterprise. I learned about the techniques which are utilized by leader
for influencing people to improve their performance and make their significant contribution in
achievement of business objectives. I came to know that both leadership as well as management
are inseparable. By reading the module I perceive that an individual working as a manager in a
company also requires leadership qualities for motivating their subordinates to increase their
participation in the business activities. I have learned that management is all about the making
different arrangements for supporting an enterprise in accomplishment of desired organizational
goals. By reading the module I have developed the understanding about different leadership
theory such as trait theory which is based on the assumption that leaders are born with certain
qualities and skills.
I have also experienced that the leadership style adopted by leaders or management style
utilizes by management in an organization has significant influence on the behaviour as well as
performance of their subordinates. The lesson which I have learned from the module has

completely change my perception about leadership and leaders. Before reading the module I was
not aware about the fact that leaders can bring the positive change at workplace. I was also
unware about the role of leadership in bringing positive change at workplace (Bush, Bell and
Middlewood, 2019). But after r4edaing the module I realize the importance of leadership in
change management procedure. After gaining the knowledge about different leadership style I
perceive that participative leadership style is best as it provides leader an ease in Analysing the
performance of workers and help leaders in making suitable decisions. The major drawback of
participative leadership style is that the decision making can be quite time consuming procedure.
In addition to this, I gained knowledge about advantages as well as disadvantages of different
leadership and management style. By reading the module I came to know about the skills ,
knowledge and core competencies which are required to be developed by an individual for
becoming successful leader or manager.

CONCLUSION
From the above study, it has been concluded that the leadership style adopted by leaders
have significant influence on the attitude of their followers. The other thing which has been
summarized from the above is that leaders develop skills and knowledge with their experience
working in different fields. It has also been concluded that there is no single leadership styles
which is suitable in all the situations.
Leaders are provided with suggestion to adopt the ;leadership style considering the
demand of their followers as well as situation.
