Title of eposter: Systematic review on hand hygiene from scholarly databases
Student Name: Student Number:
Intended Audience: Registered Nurses
Audience Learning Objectives: Maintenance of hand hygiene has been considered to be an important
aspect within the hospital setting. It has been reported that 50% of the infectious diseases are caused on
account of poor maintenance of hand hygiene. The learning objectives for the registered nursing
professionals would incorporate of the following:
To identify a proper strategy to reduce the prevalence of infections within the hospital setting
To elucidate the challenges with respect to stringent hand hygiene compliance practices
To identify the events when hand hygiene should be performed on a mandatory basis
Purpose of eposter in addressing the identified learning need(500 words): The purpose of the e-poster is to
spread awareness among the registered nursing professionals about the proper maintenance of hand
hygiene. In accordance to the scientific studies it has been stated that the professionals encounter a wide
number of challenges in complying with the hand hygiene standard protocol. The obstacles include, carrying
or lifting something, use of cell phones, handling the work station or using gloves while working (Allegranzi
et al. 2013). It has also been reported that more than 50% of the professionals are unaware of the proper
hand hygiene protocol (Jackson,Lowton and Griffiths 2014). In addition to this, it should also be mentioned
that five critical instances have been identified which requires the professionals to strictly comply with the
hand washing regime. The five instances include, before touching a patient, before cleaning the wound or
applying antiseptic, on or after exposure to body fluid, after touching a patient and after touching the
surroundings of a patient (Seibert et al.2014). Therefore, in order to reduce the prevalence of health care
related infections, health care organizations must introduce stringent norms and training sessions so as to
educate the registered nursing professionals about the maintenance of hand hygiene. Use of sanitizers and
hand washing liquid within different departments of the hospital must be incorporated on a mandatory
basis (Seibert et al. 2014). Further, maintenance of hand hygiene would also promote safe heath for the
nursing professionals and prevent the occurrence of infections (Smiddy, O'Connell and Creedon 2015). Also,
it should be mentioned that while devising training program, special emphasis on the correct procedure of
hand washing must be elaborated so that the professionals can assimilate it in their regular working regime.
Some of the infectious diseases that can be avoided with the incorporation of hand-hygiene regimen would
include, flu, food poisoning and manifestation of allergies. It has also been reported to reduce
contamination within the hospital environment and health care associated infections. Therefore, healthcare
organizations all over the world must actively engage in complying with the stringent standards of hand
hygiene protocol so as to prevent any incidence of infectious disorders and transmission of germs. As,
registered nursing professionals are in frequent contact with the patients and are responsible for the
maintenance of a healthy environment so as to promote accelerated recovery, it is extremely important for
them to comply with the standard hygienic practices.
