Hand Therapy 2
Description
In placement as a student of occupational therapy year 1, I did one full day at hand
therapy. I spent most of my time with physiotherapy in the hospital what. I learned about
Anatomy and physiology of the hand looking at how to use Goniometry measurements on
patients hands why this important in hand therapy. I looked at how to make a splint and looking
at different splints materials. I look at different hand conditions such as Carpal tunnel syndrome,
Tendonitis and Tendinosis and Arthritis and Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
Feeling
I felt one day was inadequate for me to learn much about hand therapy. I wish I had
more days in Hand therapy. This is because I was unable to learn all these in a single day.
Evaluation
This placement was really interesting and challenging at the same time. I wished I could
have more time to learn about hand therapy. Nevertheless, I am pleased because, despite the
short time, I was able to learn a lot on hand therapy including splints and associated materials.
Moreover, I was able to examine hand conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinosis,
rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and tendonitis (Trumble, Rayan, Baratz, Budoff and Slutsky 2016).
Analysis
The Royal College Code of Ethics 2015 requires that I must identify the risks to my
patient and act in a way that minimizes risks. Therefore, to give my patients in the hand therapy
efficient service, I will apply the requirements of the code of ethics. The HCPC Guidance on
conduct and ethics requires that I become competent in my placement to ensure my patients are
safe. This applies to my own placement and hence I will be able to adhere to HCPC to guarantee
the safety of patients.
