1. Demonstrate you understand you role as BAND 2 medical lab assistant with
reference to the departmental structure and the relationship of pathology to service
users.
ANS:
Medical laboratory assistants are the specific subgroup of lab technologists and technicians.
The core duties of medical laboratory assistants are running lab test, preparing specimens,
planning microbiological specimens, performing routine and specific tests, preparing staining
for further assessment, performing phlebotomy, recording test information, ordering lab
supplies and keeping a clean environment. As a medical laboratory BAND 2 assistant my
role will be to analyse the sample of body tissue and fluids taken from the patients while
assisting the medical lab assistant band 7 staffs with receiving samples, checking samples and
documenting. I have to work in accordance with the instructions shared by Bio Medical
Scientist BAND 6. As per the regulation, as a medical lab assistant of BAND 2 I have to
participate in health and safety related training procedures and I have to maintain safe and
secure work practices. In case of any ambiguity I should directly convey my views to my
supervisors or leader with formal and interactive communication to maintain an transparent
and integrated service quality. I should also have effective communication skill that would
help me to communicate with my co-workers and service users. I should be also aware of the
documentation and evidence based recording procedures. I have to also maintain physical and
mental fitness to execute my work properly. I should also be aware of cultural competency,
equity and diversity on practice with a non-discriminatory manner (hcpc-uk.org 2019). I
should be also obliged with the confidentiality concerns of the documentation associated with
database privacy and security.

2. Demonstrate that you practice according to the current legislation applicable to your
profession as medical lab assistant
ANS:
In accordance with standard practices and codes, as a lab assistant I must be able to
understand and comply with three major regulatory obligations namely the workplace health
and safety regulatory compliance; confidentiality or data privacy regulatory compliances;
UKAS ISO 15189 and ISO 17025 medical laboratory management codes and conducts.
According to occupational health and safety I have to comply with the code of conducts
related to practice safely and effectively within the scope of the practice complying with
workplace health and safety regulations and hazard reporting procedures. I should also be
aware of hazard identification and reporting procedure and guideline as per HSE or Health
and Safety Executive. I should be also able to practice within the legal and ethical boundaries
of Medical Laboratory Technology Act, 1991 (MLTA). As per the international ISO
standards I have to execute a transparent, safe and secure technical procedures in medical
laboratory which includes the regulation of quality assurance, equipment management,
medical instrument and subsistence handling and others. I should also be complied with
CMLTO Professional Misconduct Regulation 752/93 act (Health.gov.uk 2018). I have to also
comply with the organisational policies and procedures regarding discrimination, abuse,
violence and zero tolerance obligations. I must also aware of and execute my work procedure
under the obligations of confidentiality and data privacy related regulations that includes Data
Protection Act 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Medical Data
Accessibility Regulations.

3. Show how an area of your training can illustrate how a Biomedical Scientist can
maintain fitness to practice
ANS:
The area of maintaining fitness to practice is associated with the understanding of needs and
maintaining high standards of personal and professional conducts, understanding the
importance of keeping good physical and mental health, understanding the needs of updating
the skillset and knowledge regarding the professional filed. As a biomedical scientist every
individual should understand the need to maintain high standards of professional and personal
conduct that includes the national and state level regulatory policies and procedures along
with the organisational policies and code of conducts (ibms.org 2019). I must also able to
maintain own physical and mental health by continuous monitoring and taking actions
according to the situation. Effectively maintaining own health allows a biomedical scientists
to perform efficient with full potentiality because of having appropriate physical and mental
condition. Biomedical science is an ever evolving field where, every day new researches and
interventions are being tested and new methods are being discovered. As a biomedical
scientist every individual should keep the skill and knowledge up to date which is very
essential to maintain a career long learning procedures.
4. Describe how you contribute to your own personal health. Provide, at least one
example of each, how you maintain physical and mental well-being and what
appropriate actions you would take in response to health issues.
ANS:
Physical and Mental health both are the essential components of employee’s health.
Therefore, as an employee, to maintain personal health competent enough I have to monitor
my health conditions regularly and in case of any complicacy I will directly consult with

medical practitioners. To maintain a continuous physical fitness I will keep track of my BMI
by measuring my body weight every second day. As a medical laboratory assistant I may
have to work for a prolonged hours and therefore healthy body mass index I can execute my
work with less musculoskeletal issues. I regularly practice physical exercise to maintain good
physical health. Since, mental health conduction or mental state is also associated with the
performance level and level of motivation, I should also taking care of my mood and mental
states as well as motivation level. To reduce stress I am currently in a yoga classes that helps
me to reduce my stress and anxiety level. In case of any health issue because of workplace
conditions and limitations, I should contact with the Human Resource department of the
medical laboratory to convey my issues for finding solutions. Regarding my stress issues I
can also communicate with my supervisors as well. For major clinical issue I should visit a
healthcare clinic or hospital. I would also report regarding my illness or injury to my
superiors if it can be considered as a work associated injury.
5. Demonstrate that you understand the principles of continuing professional
development (CPD) in relation to maintaining professional and personal competence
and that you have the skills to manage self-directed lifelong learning. Explain the role of
reflection on practice and the need to record it.
ANS:
Continuing Professional Development or CPD is a continuous process of developing,
maintaining and documenting my own skillset and knowledge in my academic and
professional filed. Medical science is evolving every day and so as a medical laboratory
professional I have to keep me updated about new knowledge regarding drugs, diagnosis,
specimen testing, medical equipment, recording and medical assessment procedures. It will
help to not only enrich my knowledge and understanding, but also to perform proficiently in
my field while making a successful career path. Along with learning and gaining knowledge

for CPD I should also ensure the level effective implementation of my knowledge in my
regular professional practice. Reflective practice can be very effective in this case where I
can participate in a situation while applying my existing level of knowledge and
understanding and I can reflect on my scope of improving proficiency. Reflection cycle based
reflective practice is very effective for continuous improvement. The reflective cycle contains
5 steps namely Execution, Description of the experience, Evaluation of my limitations,
Conclusion to find scopes and Action plan as preparation for improvement (Ménard and
Ratnapalan 2013). In execution phase a person execute knowledge and proficiency in a
particular situation. In Execution phase the person describe the experience in written format.
In evaluation phase the description of experience is evaluated through strength and weakness
analysis. In conclusion the final findings are documented and opportunity to improve in
further is explored. In action plan the knowledge and proficiency development plan has been
made and executed. After that, again the phase of execution of gathered knowledge and
proficiency comes. Throughout the reflective procedure documentation is a very effective
part that allows a person to record the path of self-development while assessing the
limitations of chosen path in future assessment.

ANS:

reporting of incidents or problems. Provide 3 examples, highlighting the nature of the

incident and severity of the problem, what solutions were available and your personal
responsibility dealing with the situation. Please justify your choices.
ANS:
Identification and reporting is an effective risk avoidance strategy to maintain workplace
health and safety. The principle of this procedure is to inform the higher management about
any mal-practice and risky environment within the office premises, so that they could take
steps accordingly to mitigate the issue. As example of hazardous or risky situation it can be
said that, if I see that a particular instrument is hanging over a cabinet in a way that can cause
any type of physical harm to passer-by by falling off on his or her head, I should immediately
inform the facilitation and admiration department about this risky situation through verbal
communication. As a workplace security violation, if I find that some-one or a group of
employees is smocking within a no-smoking zone of the office premise, I should definitely
attract the attention of the management system through submitting a written report to the
supervisors as well as human resource department with evidence. I should choose the written
report option of because it allows a person to keep confidentiality of a data while reporting an
on-job error. For an example of hazard incident reporting it can be said that if I find smoke
speeding from an electrical equipment with sparks I should definitely switch the fire alarm
and report to the office administration immediately regarding the incident. In this situation I
have to comply with the emergency reporting procedures and alarming protocols.
8. Give two accounts of professional situations when you were aware of your
personal/professional limit of practice was reached and you had to seek advice or refer
to another professional. Please justify your decisions
ANS:

My ability to handle a situation of solving problem of user is dependent on my knowledge
and professional limit or practice. Ignoring my personal and professional limitation would
violate the regulatory policies and obligations while risking the life of the service user. In a
case where I pick up phone at reception and if I am asked by clinician interoperate a result, I
would definitely refer to my superior for clinical interpretation. To interpret the
pathophysiological result to a clinician I must have enough knowledge about medical and
clinical interpretation. Giving wrong information to the clinician may have huge impact on
the patient. Apart from that as in second scenario, if I am asked by a service user to modify
the medical test referral report as per the up-to-date response or instruction of the medical
practitioner, I would refer the user to my supervisor. I do not have the authority to change the
previous referral application of pathophysiological tests as per the updated information. In
this case I must comply with the professional limit of practice based on my job role and
responsibility.
