1. Demonstrate you understand you role as BAND 2 medical lab assistant with
reference to the departmental structure and the relationship of pathology to service
users.
ANS:
Medical laboratory assistants are the specific subgroup of lab technologists and technicians.
The core duties of medical laboratory assistants are running lab test, preparing specimens,
planning microbiological specimens, performing routine and specific tests, preparing staining
for further assessment, performing phlebotomy, recording test information, ordering lab
supplies and keeping a clean environment. As a medical laboratory BAND 2 assistant my
role will be to analyse the sample of body tissue and fluids taken from the patients while
assisting the medical lab assistant band 7 staffs with receiving samples, checking samples and
documenting. I have to work in accordance with the instructions shared by Bio Medical
Scientist BAND 6. As per the regulation, as a medical lab assistant of BAND 2 I have to
participate in health and safety related training procedures and I have to maintain safe and
secure work practices. In case of any ambiguity I should directly convey my views to my
supervisors or leader with formal and interactive communication to maintain an transparent
and integrated service quality. I should also have effective communication skill that would
help me to communicate with my co-workers and service users. I should be also aware of the
documentation and evidence based recording procedures. I have to also maintain physical and
mental fitness to execute my work properly. I should also be aware of cultural competency,
equity and diversity on practice with a non-discriminatory manner (hcpc-uk.org 2019). I
should be also obliged with the confidentiality concerns of the documentation associated with
database privacy and security.

2. Demonstrate that you practice according to the current legislation applicable to your
profession as medical lab assistant
ANS:
In accordance with standard practices and codes, as a lab assistant I must be able to
understand and comply with three major regulatory obligations namely the workplace health
and safety regulatory compliance; confidentiality or data privacy regulatory compliances;
UKAS ISO 15189 and ISO 17025 medical laboratory management codes and conducts.
According to occupational health and safety I have to comply with the code of conducts
related to practice safely and effectively within the scope of the practice complying with
workplace health and safety regulations and hazard reporting procedures. I should also be
aware of hazard identification and reporting procedure and guideline as per HSE or Health
and Safety Executive. I should be also able to practice within the legal and ethical boundaries
of Medical Laboratory Technology Act, 1991 (MLTA). As per the international ISO
standards I have to execute a transparent, safe and secure technical procedures in medical
laboratory which includes the regulation of quality assurance, equipment management,
medical instrument and subsistence handling and others. I should also be complied with
CMLTO Professional Misconduct Regulation 752/93 act (Health.gov.uk 2018). I have to also
comply with the organisational policies and procedures regarding discrimination, abuse,
violence and zero tolerance obligations. I must also aware of and execute my work procedure
under the obligations of confidentiality and data privacy related regulations that includes Data
Protection Act 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Medical Data
Accessibility Regulations.
