Background and overview of the project:
The project is about transition from employee to a leadership position and learning
leadership skills without showing favouritism. Following day to day activities with mentor or RN
supervisor is an approach to complete the project and achieve the goals of the project. For a
health care professional or employee, learning or acquiring leadership skill is important for
career progression and development. As health care organizations are becoming complex, there
is a need for strong leadership. Current health care environment demands collaborative leaders
who can work with the team to develop a vision and use tactics to empower other staffs to
achieve the goals (Sonnino, 2016). As health care setting is a place where most vulnerable group
like children and older adults are exposed to adverse clinical events, this has resulted in changes
in accountability and scrutiny standards. Hence, health care professionals like nurse are held
accountable for monitoring care standards and evaluating best care delivery methods. Therefore,
leadership training is important for health care professionals so that they acquire skills of
communication, empowerment, patient-centred communication and collaboration. All this will
play a role in improving the quality of the work environment in hospital settings (Daly et al.,
2014).
Significance of the project to the practicum site:
Currently I am working as a certified nursing assistant at Townview health and rehab.
The significance of the project to the practicum site is that health care centres require efficient
leaders to meet organization’s objective and by learning ways to transition from employee to a
leadership position, major issues and health care delivery challenges at Townview health can be
efficiently managed. Hence, the project will help to learn about attributes required for effective

leadership and use the skills to strengthen the quality of care. Sfantou et al. (2017) explains that
effective leadership skill is necessary to achieve high quality of care, strengthen employee
morale and achieve job satisfaction. Hence, the significance of this project for the workplace is
that it will open the way for achieving high productivity levels and using quality measures like
structure, process and outcome to assess and modify the quality of care.
Relevance to the work:
The project is relevant to my work as I work as a certified nursing assistant and my job
may require me to assume the leadership position in the future. Nurses are expected to become
future leaders as through their work experience, they become aware about vulnerabilities in
different clinical situation and use of appropriate leadership skill and judgment can help them to
best counter difficult situations. Recent research study suggest that clinical leadership is
important because of high incidence of serious quality issues, high rate of change, workforce
shortage and high rate of change. The paper suggested a compelling need to enhance the scope of
nurse in primary health care for leadership (Joseph & Huber, 2015). Hence, this project is
expected to help me meet the expectations of health care services.
