Chosen health issue - Diabetes type 2
Two factors - Culture and Psychology
Culture: Type 2 diabetes is more common in the citizens of UK. A research has
shown poor blood glucose control and lack of knowledge and awareness about the
management of Diabetes among people. Research reveals some of the dietary customs
food products which can affect glucose in the body of patients and indicate that
problems regarding sending information to the patients should be solved. It shows the
common beliefs held by patients which help physician in understanding what patients
think and show poor compliance (Detels and et. al., 2011). In this situation, all patients
should be approached as individuals so that their unique needs and problems can be
solved according to their cultural backgrounds.
Culture is one of the phenomenon which displays behaviour of different
individuals and beliefs of a group. It is very difficult but one of the most important factor
which should be understand by the individuals working in health care sector. Basically
culture is defined as the shared values, beliefs, traditions and identities of a group which
differentiate that group from the other. Language, norms and values also come under
this which helps in creating a sense of social support among the people of same culture.
All these assists in implementing the health styles and proper utilisation of all health
care services and professional advice. Sometimes, cultural barriers affect the treatment
of diabetes. As it is a long term and serious disease and one of the major issues
worldwide, it affects every society and this is seen as lack of knowledge about this
disease among large number of citizens especially in the people of UK ( De Villiers and
et. al., 2013). A research reveals that people suffering from this disease do not receive

proper care or treatment. The national service framework for Diabetes set the minimum
standards of service which should be delivered to all patients of diabetes. All services of
health care industry should be designed by ensuring the factors like patient's
background. As cultural and language barriers largely affect the quality of services
delivered to groups or individuals suffering from diabetes, better understanding of
culture of an individual or group of people helps in improving the quality of services
delivered to a large number of people.
Psychology: Patients of diabetes need psychological support during time of
their treatment. As psychological support plays an effective role in managing the
behaviours of patients, without this, patients do not give his or her full attention during
the time of therapies which affect their health. This increase the burden on healthcare
institution and system (Granskär and Höglund-Nielsen, 2012). Psychological aspects
tell about emotions of individuals, their self-regulation and behaviour during the time of
treatment. All this affects the future thinking and illness perception of an individual.
Positive psychological support protects diabetic patients from the negative effect
of illness, emotional disorder and help them in managing their behaviour along with
encouraging the physical health. Patients having values personal beliefs strengthen to
the self efficacy and self relation which leads to healthy behaviours and positive
experience of patients. Along with this, affect the personal will of a individual and results
in better functioning and better control of disease.
According to a research, Diabetes type 2 is one of the common and serious
diseases in UK and it is one of the common causes of death of large number of people.

disease. With regard to health psychology, it is an internal factor which affects the
perception of people regarding health related behaviour. According to different beliefs
and attitudes, people behave different form each other. In this situation, it is advisable to
diagnosis for better understanding the background of people.
Health promotion strategy for preventing diabetes type 2
As there is no cure for diabetes, this disease can be prevented. In the UK, for
curing diabetes, finding out the risk and reducing it is necessary to make it simpler for
people for making healthy choices every day (Meade, 2010). Following two steps can
be followed for preventing diabetes type 2 in the UK. Raising awareness: It is essential that everyone first understand the risk of type
2 diabetes as it is widely misunderstood by a large number of people. Many
people are not aware about the causes which create the risk of developing
diabetes. So, it is essential to first understand and find out the risk. Also, for
individuals, for find out the risk causing disease called diabetes type 2 is
significant.
Taking action to reduce the risk: Once after finding the risk, it is necessary for
the individual to know what to do next. In England, a diabetes prevention
programme was held in which health care people supported a large number of
individuals for reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Same scheme can be held in
various areas of UK.
It is necessary to use an effective tool for decreasing number of patients suffering
from the disease of diabetes. So, in this case, firstly large number of public should be
made aware with this disease. As current treatment are not enough effective for

controlling its impact. So necessary modifications can be one in the tools for provide
benefits to large number of people (White and et .al., 2012). After that variety of
treatment and prevention strategies should be offered so that this disease can be
controlled.
Main risks of arising the diabetes type 2 is overweight and heredity problem of an
individual. As today large number of people are at high risk of this disease so there is a
need to implement various diabetes prevention techniques in UK. A programme can be
conduct with the aim of reducing the risk by maintain a healthy weight and by
recommend the healthy activity or balance diet to the people. In this situation, it is very
important for and a big burden on NHS for implementing large number of activities for
reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. As this type of risk is developing mainly in adults
so, this should be decreased by encouraging various health related activities.
