What is the concept of health and safety in workplace? As per the view ofMuflih and Juliana (2020), health and safety are the two important elements of corporate governance. Organisation need to look out at these two factors in more detailed manner in order to create a safe working space for their employee as well as consumer. The companies not only have to build a safe environment for the employee and consumer but also for other stakeholders which are directly or indirectly involve with the operation of business. In recent time many of the organisations are shifting their focus on developing an surrounding for their company which safeguard the interest of their employee and build a better goodwill for their brand. According toAkcay and et. al ( 2018), workplace health and safety is also known as occupational health and safety. It is the right of every employee in whatever industry they are working to have a safe working environment towards their job. There are so many different laws which were developed by legislation to facilitate a good working surrounding to the workers working in a company. The health and safety policy are being build in order to minimise the risk related to accident, injuries and fatalities. It is the duty of the management to assure that they are providing safe and healthy working space to their employee. As per the world health organisation the definition of workplace health and safety is “organisation should aim at developing and maintaining a high degree of physical, social and mental well being t their workers in order to safeguard their feeling”. It is the duty of the top management to adopt those policies and laws which will protect the health of their workforce so that they can work with more dedication and efficiency (Das and Rangarajan, 2020). If a safe working place is there then the productivity level of the employee were high because
they will work with more energy and enthusiasm. It is the capability of the workers to work with more energy if a hygiene and safe working space is there. In the United Kingdom the act related to health and safety at workplace will pass at the year 1974. This act covers the laws related to developing a safer working space were hazardous activity is not happened. This law also contained a detailed responsibility of employee and employer in order to ensure a safe working environment. There are various reasons behind passing this law by the legislation of the country. As they want that their workers will not get injured nor has any health issue while working in an organisation. Industries not put the workers on the risk while doing their business operation (Japutra and Situmorang, 2021) Workers have the moral right to work in safe workplace in which they do not get harm or injured. If a company has poor health and safety at workplace then this will largely impact their brand image and their overall performance will also be low. In current age were gaining market share is important it is vital for the companies to build a good brand image. If there will be poor safety than this will enhance their cost of production because they need to pay legal fee or compensation damage which will add their working cost (Adeyeye, 2019) There are certain advantages of workplace safety and health which will be enjoyed by the companies such as Enhance brand image which will attract more buyers towards the company Increase the level of production which will help in competing with the rivalry in strongest manner. Attract more new talent towards the company which will helps in reducing the cost and working with more creativity. Fewer risk of accident which will boost employee wellness and also protect the company for paying extra legal fee to cover damage. State the health and safety policy followed by Tesco? According toYu and et. al (2019), to ensure health and safety at the workplace Tesco follows follow the act passé by the legal authority in order to provide effect safety to their stakeholder. They place the cleaning product in right shelf they also put the manufacturing instruction so that safety precaution can be made. They also provide gloves and caps to their employee so that they can create a healthy working place to their customers (Marriott, Schilling and Gravani, 2018). One of the most important policies they use is providing effective training to their staff so that proper direction about cleaning products can be given. Handling and moving stock policy:In most of the retail sector injuries are caused due to inappropriate handling of inventory. Tesco to minimise the risk related to stock has use the policy of moving stock. They provide correct measures and tool through which they can handle their inventory in appropriate manner (Wei, 2019). Write down the issues faced by company in case of health and safety scandal? As per the view ofGarrido-Moreno, Garcia-Morales and Martin-Rojas, 2021, there is a negative impact of poor health and safety policy on organisational image. The company faces lot of challenges when there is absence of health and safety working environment in a business. The market image of the company also depend upon the way they protect their employee and buyers well being. It i very important for the company to design an appropriate health standard according to the industry they are working because this will help them to safe themselves from the hazardous accident or activity. In case of poor safety norms companies are not able to fulfil the corporate responsibility that is attached by the organisation. Some of the issue that company faces in case of health and safety scandal are as follow: Negativepublicopinion:theforemostproblemthatwillbeencounterby the organisation is negative image of the company in consumer mind. If there is not proper safety measures that are being adopted by the company and due to which accident take place in large number. Then this wills create a poor public opinion which will affect their business(Friend and Kohn, 2018). A bad public image will badly effect the growth and success of the company and they brand will not able to sale their goods and service in the market. This is the worst issue which they can face and it impacts the overall business in greater sense. Finesandlegalfees:oneofthevitalchallengesthatareencounterbythe organisation due to health and safety scandal is compensation fee and legal fine.
Paying the amount as compensation to the damage happen in absence of safety working place will increase the cost of production of the company. The brands need to pay extra cost due to the hazardous activity taken place(Sharma and et. al, 2020). It is the moral right of both employee and consumer to charge compensation amount in caseofdamagehappenwhileproducingtheproductorbyusingitforfinal consumption. The fines and legal fees are mostly in large amount in case of poor health and safety standards. Apart from the fines a legal case can be filled against the company which will affect their brand image in poor manner. As per the workplace safety Act, a right is grated to the person who caught with an accident o injury to sue the company due to improper health and safety scandal(Reese, 2018). Enhance the risk of employee injury and accident:Another problem that company will face is increasing the risk of accident within the workplace. Employee can caught with the injury anytime due to poor health and safety working space. If employees are not rained properly with the tool and equipment they are working then the chance of accident increase(Barnes and Sax, 2020). Employee accident also increases the expenses of the company which will indirectly impact the profit margin of the company. Infact the major problem that will face by the company with the increase in accident is competitive advantage loss. Conclusion of literature review: From the above gathered secondary data for literature review, it is concluded that in order to fulfil the corporate governance responsibility it is very crucial for the organisation to manage a healthy and safety working space. Adopting the right safety standard will assists the company in building a strong brand image for the organisation. In recent time it is very important to create a strong image of the company in consumer mind because it will aids them to gain competitive advantage from the rivalry. In the time of digitalisation were advanced technology is being used by the organisation; it is the duty of the mangers to train their employee because t will reduce the risk related to the health and safety of the employee. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research methodology is one of the vital chapters in the overall research because in this section researcher gets to know about the type of data which is needed to collect in order to attain the aim and objective. It can be defined as the systematic process which is used to identify, analyse and interpret the data accurately. This section also helps the researcher to attain the overall research in more valuable manner. The reader also use the data gathers in this section to evaluate the validity and reliability of the research(Mukherjee, 2019). In this section various philosophies, approaches and strategy are used in order to collect and evaluate information. There are various components in the methodology which is discussed below with the help of Saunders research onion framework and the components are discussed below: Research philosophy:It is set of principle which tells about the type of data needed for the current research topic. There are two types of research philosophies which are positivism and interpretivism. Positivism gathers objective data and interpretivism collected subjectivedata.Asperthepresentresearch, researcherhasusedpositivismresearch philosophy(Bairagi and Munot, 2019). The reason behind this is quantitative data is collected and analysed in more generalised manner. Another reason for choosing this philosophy it will help the researcher to collect and analyse the data as per the current trend and pattern. It also assists in gathering data in more freedom and valuable way. Research approach:It can be defined as process which is used to test the theories and hypothesis in more accurate manner. Research approach is used in order to attain the aim and objective in right way as per the tested theories. It is being divided into two parts which are deductive and inductive approach. Deductive approach test the theories on the basis of quantitative information whereas in inductive hypothesises are evaluated on qualitative data (Ledford and Gast, 2018). In the current investigation, deductive approach is used to test the theories. The major benefit of this is it analysis the existing hypothesis rather than laying stress on building new theories. The other reason is it helps in showing the relationship between the two variables. Research choice:Research choice is made by the researcher in order to know the type of data needed in the study. There are two research choices which are quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative research collects and analyse numerical data. On the other hand, qualitativeresearchgathersandevaluatesnonnumericalinformation(Säfstenand
Gustavsson, 2020). As per the existing investigation, investigator has selected mixed method to gather both types of data that is quantitative and qualitative. The reason behind selecting this approach is to gathers in depth knowledge of the topic in greater sense. This will also helps in attaining the aim in more accurate manner. Research strategy:It is a step by step plan which helps in gathering data as per the idea and thoughts of the researcher. There are various types of research strategy some of them are survey, action research, case study, systematic literature review, focused group and many more(Eisend and Kuss, 2019). In the present research, researcher has selected survey research strategy to gathers quantitative data. The major advantage of this is it scalability, this approach can gathered data from mass population at single time and can reach with large audience. Time horizon:It is the time framework which is used by the researcher to know the investing time for completing the research. Cross sectional and longitudinal are the two time frameworks(Daniel, Kumar and Omar, 2018). As per the existing research cross sectional time horizon is used. The main benefit of this is it takes less time to gather data as well as one of the cost effective approach. Another reason is it can observe multiple variables at single time which helps in gathering various information in shorter time duration. Data collection:Data collection is the process of gathering data from various sources as per the requirement. It is classified into two forms which are primary and secondary data collection technique. Primary data collects first hand information. On the other hand, secondary data gathers second hand data.As pr the research, both the data is used for completing the information(Lai, 2018). In primary data fresh data will be gathers directly from the respondent and in secondary data existing data collected by any other person is being used. Some of the primary data source is questionnaire, interview etc., and secondary source are books, online sites and many others(Davidavičienė, 2018). Research instrument for primary data is questionnaire and secondary data is systematic literature review. Dataanalysis:Frequencydistributionandthematicarethetwodataanalysis technique. Frequency distribution inspects quantitative data and thematic analysis qualitative data. In current research frequency distribution method will be used to inspect and clean
primary raw data in order to obtain fresh useful information(Whicher, Philbin and Aronson, 2018). Another reason is it takes less time and cost for evaluating numerical data. Sampling:Sampling is the method which is used to take out sample as per the requirement for the whole population. There are two sampling method which are probability and non probability sampling. In current research probability sampling method is used to select the sample(Coombes and Ryder, 2019). In this method each and every respondent gets chance of being selected. Further in probability sampling, random sampling technique is used so that equal and fair chance can be obtained. The sample size will be 50 employees from the company Tesco.
