Task 2 (LO2 AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, M1, M2, M3, D1, D2, D3)
Interviewer: What are structures applied in the health care services?
Student: Functional structure, Divisional Structure, Line and staff organizational structure and
Committee structure are the main structures that the company can have with them. Linear
organizational structure has the direct relationship with various departments of the organization.
The staff or the functional organizational structure the company needs to follow a linear
structure. The line position and staff position are to be followed. The company needs to be well
accommodated with the existing structure. The staff officers or the managers have the staff
authority to control; with the help of the structure (Estacio and Marks, 2007, p.45). The company
needs some specialist task. The workers need to be the potentially conflicting the major unity
from violation of the main command and the tendency to maintain the centralized structure are
the two key factors that are affecting the organizational structure (Gompers and Lerner, 2000,
p.34).
In case of the Line and staff organizational structure belongs to the type of organizational
structure (Poon et al. 2007, p.355). In this structure the company need to maintain the
relationship between different levels and the specialist is responsible for the assisting special
areas. Under the chairman of the company a proper structure need to be classified and
understood properly (Sosa et al. 2004, p.1675). The company maintains the structure to identify
the advertising, service and control the organizational factors.
Interviewer: How do you analyze the concepts of organizational structure in the health and
social care services?
Student: The organizational structure of any organization is based on the Tuckman’s Model on
team development. The structure of the team is divided into four parts including storming,
forming, performing and norming. There are different ideas relating to the structure of the
team .The primitive among them is the above mentioned model. The team members have to
achieve the target agreed on the basic factors. At the very beginning the team needs to be form
under the motivation of the team culture and team spirit. After the formation the team has to be
mentioned. After allocation of the task the team need to be mentioned the function of the
8

organization. The team starts to set up against the initial refusal of the team. The procedures to
deal with task are
Norming: After all these the team is finally ready to perform the task. This is the final stage of
achieving Performing mentioned in the structure.
Tuckman also highlighted some important factors including the fact that a team is not ready to
achieve the task unless it reaches to the final form of the team structure. Most of the team is
accepting storming as a normal way of operation of the team. The time span to complete the task
is depending on the team and it is vary according to the structure of the team. The team building
activities need to be organized by the organization to maintain the team spirit in the work place.
Various roles in the organization are to be played by different employees of the organization.
The main characters such as the leadership should be given to the hands of the persons who have
the natural ability to encourage people. The persons with amazing ability to contribute to the well
being of the team are the best tam players of the organization.
Interviewer: How the theories do relate the behavior of the individuals and groups in
healthcare?
Student: A good scientific theory generates the logical deduction of truth by proving a
hypothesis wrong (Kendler, 2005, p.434). The main aim of the theory is to deduce the logical
facts that need to address the problem faced by the mass. Psychological theory helps to predict
the occurrence of an event experiences by the people are facing. The theory when applied to the
important practice to apply the question based on if and then. The main application of the theory
is the study of human behavior in the health care sector. The theory has to be contributed to
understand the relationship of a person with the other people. The result need to be applied in a
way with the proper information regarding the same. Those working in the health care sector
have devoted most of their life interacting with the majority of the mass. The state of complete
physical and mental health and social well being need to be implemented in the study of the
psychology of the mass. The other theory that is requiring maintaining the basic health of the
organization is the Maslow and Rogers’s theory.
The performance of the staffs is based on the performance of the structure of the organization.
The advantages of the organization are the conflict between the line and the staff performance is
9
Document Page
the key essence of this structure (Steiger et al. 2014, p.44). Though the structure is more flexible
the company has a distinct role play between the staff line and the staff. Span control can be
increased in this organization. The company needs to maintain the structure according to the
command of the organization. In this structure the basic function of the company has to maintain
the proper hierarchy to be followed. Manager of production and the manager marketing need to
be functioned under the head of the organization. The main advantages of this model are to
promote the decision making, the easy understanding of the structure and it is very simple to
understand (Zheng et al. 2010, p.764 ). The model has a drawback. There is a constant overload
on the key persons of the organization. The health care services need to follow the above
mentioned structure properly. The industry is working with team culture to operate under this
model. Health care sector is following the hierarchy structure follow the task allocation from the
upper level has to follow the uniformly. The structure of the health care sector needs to be
addressed with the basic tools and techniques (Mayer, 2005, p.295). The organizational structure
has the basic activities such as the task allocation and bonding among the employees. The
structure allows the instruction to be followed hierarchal. The humanization theory has two basic
human needs of Self Actualization and Positive regard. In the health care sectors the safety
provided to the employment and health and the belonging need to be addressed properly. Self
esteem and self actualization are also requiring to have met the basic requirement in the health
care sectors. The mental health and the acceptance, respect affection is some of the factors that
need to be addressed by the sector. The self esteem and the confidence of the people need to be
boost up for the betterment of the organization.
Health and social care organisation lately have been focusing on increasing efficiency to give
better quality service to service user and reduce the cost of operation. As organisation tends to
increase its operations more people are hired then a diverse organisation structure is created
which affect the entity in many ways. The entity should try to maintain a specific organisation
structure for better control and efficient operation.
Functional Structure: It is one of the common structures found in organisations. There are groups
performing each specific task in departments. For example, there is Finance department for
finance related matter and HR department for recruitment. In the case of a healthcare,
organization work is divided among people and each one specialises in a particular job that is

responsible for achievement of goals. The work is centralised. In case some department is non-
functioning then others are affected too because every department is connected with each other
and one cannot exist independently (Latifi and Shooshtarian, 2014, p.73).
Geographical Structure: The organisation is divided into a wide geographical area to cater to
specific needs of different geographical location or to support. It increases the chances of
business in that particular location because people in the nearby areas will find it very helpful to
easily access healthcare institution, remarked by Agbim (2013, p.55). The geographical structure
is costly because it involves setting up of a whole new unit in a different area. There is less
diversity in the workforce.
Matrix: Matrix structure works in an organisation with excellent work culture where an
employee is connected with the different department so the work is decentralised and the
employee is responsible for the entity’s projects, Schnetler et al. (2015, p.13). In this structure,
the employee may be overburdened with responsibilities so they need to prioritise their work
projects. An employee engaged in multiple projects there is a high chance of confusion and
conflict and too much time spent on group decision.
In the case of centralization, the power to make decisions lies at the top level but it results in firm
control and fast decision on matters by the top level, Steiger et al. (2014, p.45). There is no
proper communication between the top level and lower level as there is a lot of bureaucracy. The
lower level managers have better knowledge about the market needs but not proper
communication to the top level which may affect the motivation level of hard working lower
level employees. In the case of decentralisation, the power to take a decision is spread out this. It
shows a lot of faith to middle-level managers to make a decision as suited to the situation. This
also acts as a motivation. Enhanced communication with the base helps in heightened revenue
and correct decisions based on market conditions. It is more flexible to reply quickly to satisfy
customer’s needs is helpful in a healthcare institution (Csaszar, 2012, p.3).
In the case of flat organisation structure, there is one level one level of power or authority
compramising of CEO and the managers. Here communication flow is each and decision is taken
faster. In the case of tall organisation structure, there are multiple layers of authority or control.
For example, in an organisation, a low-level employee will report to a team leader who will
11
Document Page
report to its manager who in turn will report it to senior managers who in turn will report it to the
divisional head and then it will reach the top management. Here there are multiple levels through
the information need to pass to top level management communication within the organisation is
not efficient it takes a lot of time in information from top to bottom level. According to Haan, and
Kloub (2013, p.84), in health care quick delivery of information is required to ensure decision
within the stipulated time.
The impact of organizational culture and structure on health and social care services is
tremendous. Their significance is immense, and cannot be underestimated in any situation.
Different organizational structures are created for different ways of coping with the demands of
service care delivery. Inefficient structure and improper methods of communication between
coworkers in the office can result in a drastic drop in organizational performance.
A proper workplace culture is necessary to ensure that colleagues work together in a proper
manner. A good and efficient organizational environment based on trust and bonding is
necessary for instilling a sense of teamwork. A proper structural hierarchy ensures that members
of different levels are able to communicate and bond with each other effectively. A proper
workplace culture is necessary for proper functioning. Absence of these factors can result in a
decline in iverall performance of the financial entities.

Task 3 (LO3 AC 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, M1, M2, M3, D2, D3)
Executive Summary
Leadership is one of the important factors in shaping an organisation and guiding it towards the
achievement of the common goals of the organisation. The leader gives a direction to the efforts
of the team members. It makes sure that its team remains committed and aligned towards the
achievement of the common goal. Active leaders in the field of health services are important for
guiding healthcare services towards providing quality to satisfy service users and at the same
time developing leaders in the organisation in several departments like the nurse, medical,
medicine, security etc. The primary difficulty in the case of leadership context is that most
theories in leadership context had never been developed in respect of healthcare. The leadership
theory was mostly developed in respect of business and later applied in health and social care
sector. But a health care sector is different than a normal business. The leaders in health and
social care organisation should see that the employees abide by the numerous rules and
regulations of the government at the same time following the principles of the organisation and
making sure every staff of the organisation also do the same (Krishnan, 2012, p.555).
In order to become a leader in health and social care organisation, one should understand that the
difference between and a health care institution. Because in health care people come to save or
improve their life and that process should be carried out effectively there is no margin for error.
The leader should understand his abilities and he is also needed to develop leaders in the
organisation, for example, there should be a medical leader or nurse leader or accounts leader.
There is much division in an organisation so a leader needs to allocate his time to look after each
department. There should be proper planning on part of the leader to run the organisation. As
said by Williams that a leader should plan the structure of the health care that will help in
effective monitoring and running the organisation without much difficulty. In a health care
institution crisis often happens like overcrowded with patients due to fatal accidents nearby, or
some important medicine getting stocked out due to non-availability, the leaders should know
how to deal with such emergency situation and also train employees for the same. As put
forward by Damon that leadership is a behavioural trait and this trait should be visible in his
actions. The leader should have the ability to be successful otherwise, he will face difficulty in

getting things done by employees. A leader should have the ability to inspire people and go
along with every kind of people and handle them according to their mood.
In health and social care, institution leaders play an important role in making sure that health
care institution is able to perform consistently each day with continuous effort to increase the
efficiency. It organises the way a work is done and make sure that the work is done that way. At
the same encouraging the moral of the employees for improved performance and working as a
unit towards the achievement of the goal as put forward by Jenson. He should imbibe leadership
qualities among staff too because that would ensure a free flow of work in the organisation. The
communication skill of leaders helps in removing confusion and barriers within the organisation
and it even encourages people to communicate within the organisation. Proper communication
within a communication helps to avoid many problems and any undesirable event.
Leaders have to ensure that personnel under their control are allocated work according to their
capabilities. The best workers should be allocated their work based on a proper evaluation of
their skills. The leaders are tasked with a responsibility of ensuring that people under them do
not face excessive discomfort while working. They have to be motivated to ensure that they give
their best in work whenever they are given a task.
Proper motivation and communication skills are necessary for effective functioning. Proper
appraisal and prevention of excessive pressure on employees is also necessary. Leaders have to
make sure of all these factors, while helping their organization reach the pinnacle.
Group- Discussion
George Williams: A leader is a one who structures organisation for the suitability in operation
and implements it efficiently making sure that the organisation runs efficiently and if there is any
problem he will try to plug the leak with its leadership abilities.
14
Document Page
Matthew Damon: A leader is one who should have a personality to impress the other people.
Leadership is a behaviour and personality as a trait is important. Leadership qualities can be
gained or improved through training or from personal experiences.
Matt Henry: The style of leadership should be well suited to health and social care sector
because health and social care are different from other sectors. Every sector has their own
demands and challenges and they are unique in themselves. It also depends on the work culture
of the organisation, if employees are well motivated and trained and capable of completing their
task then the leader should adopt laissez-faire style. This method is basically leaving the
employee to themselves to complete their task because the leader believes that its staff is capable
of performing the duty then the leader should more focus on inspection and try to improve the
quality. This type of situation demands requires a different leader who will inspire the
employees to think innovatively.
Jenson Hillary: In big businesses, there is a big workforce with wide diversity among the
employee in terms of language, country, culture, gender and race. This is a challenge for a leader
to stop this diversity from becoming a hindrance in the communication process. The leader
should make his members mingle and use this as an opportunity to learn something new about
other cultures, languages, country and race.
Eliza Sebastian: A leader should create a leader, it should try to imbibe leadership qualities in
employees- because health and social care institutions include lots of operation which can't be
controlled or monitored by a single person he will need the help of other employees to carry its
operations efficiently.
George Williams: A leader should assess the ability of his workers and train them whenever
necessary, he should believe in his staff.
Matthew Damon: The most important factor is communication. The leader should have
excellent communication skill. He should maintain communication with his employee to know
the exact scenario of the organisation. He should understand the problems faced by employees
and try to solve them.
15
Document Page
Matt Henry: A leader without follower is “no leader”. So a leader should stress in earning the
confidence and belief of the employee. If the leader ignores the employees and starts dictatorship
policies then everyone will start revolting against him and the workflow will be disrupted which
is very harmful in case of health and social care institutions.
Jenson Hillary: The leader should be open to feedback whether “bitter” or “sweet” he will need
to treat them same at the same time work on its shortcomings to improve.
Eliza Sebastian: A leader is not made of a single quality it’s actually a combination of many
qualities the important were mentioned above by George, Matthew, Matt and Jenson. Being a
leader is quite a lot of responsibility packed inside the word "leadership". It's the ability to
perform those responsibilities that define leadership because everyone in the organisation looks
up to the leader, where he should perform to take the organisation to the next level.
Conclusion
Health care institution plays an important role in the life of the people. It protects the life of the
people. Health care institutions with a proper structure with a leader under its leadership aim at
improving the performance and give greater value back to the service users. Through a proper
structure, the work is performed in a structured and planned way. There is a relationship between
external factors and health care institutions. External factor affects in a number of ways. The
functioning of the health care institution efficiently is important for the society for the value it
provides. The assignment sheds light on the organizational structure and culture that ultimately
brings out the basic foundation on which the entire organization stands.
