INTRODUCTION
Health and social care standards are referred as the standards which are underpinned by
some principles including responsive care, compassion, be included, dignity and respect and
support and wellbeing. The professional standards are the competent care level in each phase of
the process of nursing. Professional standards are crucial as they help in promoting and directing
the clinical practice (Atkinson and Batterham, 2015). This report is based on the case study of
“direct referral from North Tyneside Living sheltered housing officers to Northumbria
Healthcare Emergency Care Practitioners and Admission Avoidance Resource Teams”. This
report covers different regulatory standards of Health and social care that underpin HSC
professional roles along with the professional disciplines. Apart from this, the capabilities and
skills needed by health and social care professionals along with relevant behavioural theories in
context of Health and social care professionals’ roles are also discussed in the report.

Health and social care standards that underpin HSC professional roles
The health and social care standards are referred as the standards which sets out to improve
the quality of care and ensure that service users will get effective quality of care. These standards
help in making the health care services better for each individual so that they treated with equal
dignity and respect which they are entitled to. These standards are developed by the government
to ensure that each individual gets the support and care which is right for them. The standards
seek to render better results for everyone. The main objective of developing health and social
care standards are to bring improvement, encourage innovation and promote flexibility in the
way people get support and care. For achieving high quality care, it is necessary for all the
support and service organisation to use the standards. There are five main standards in health and
social care system which dictates the roles of healthcare professionals. These standards are
provision of high quality care and support, involvement of patient in decision regarding their
care and support, person centered care, safety and security, gain confidence and trust of patient in
people and organisation who provide care and support (Chan, and et. al., 2016).
The healthcare standards are underpinned by 5 core principles including compassion, respect
and dignity, be included, support and wellbeing and responsive care. In order to ensure the
fulfillment of all the standards, healthcare professionals play very crucial role. It is very

necessary for all the healthcare professionals to treat people with respect and dignity while
providing them care and treatment. The healthcare professionals must treat each individual
equally regardless their gender, caste, creed, color, religion, beliefs, culture etc. Apart from this,
it is very necessary for the healthcare professionals to ensure that person centered care must be
provided to the patients so as to ensure that their needs to care and support can be mitigating
(Crisp and Dinham, 2019).
As per the provided case study, there is a gap in provision of services. The Sheltered
Housing Officers are unable to render rapid medical assistance in-situ. This makes it essential for
the professionals to follow health and social care standards appropriately as this help them in
providing high quality care services to patients in an effective and efficient way. While providing
care to the patient, it is necessary to ensure that which type of treatment is needed by the patient
and treat them accordingly. In addition to this, it is also necessary to take care consent before
providing any kind of care or treatment to them. Safety and security of patients must be taken
into consideration. It is the prime role of healthcare professionals to provide safety to patient
from any kind of abuse and harm. While providing care, the care providers should assess the risk
regarding health and safety of patient and ensure that patients experience high quality
environment in the hospital premises (Dickinson, and O'Flynn, 2016).
Health and social care professional disciplines and roles
The primary role of Health and social care professionals is to help individuals to live their
life in happy and healthy way in spite of their disabilities either emotional or physical. Health
and social care professionals play a significant role in the society and for the people living in the
community. They can have optimistic impact on the individuals around them by performing their
roles and responsibilities effectively. The main roles and responsibilities of Health and social
care professionals include providing care to individuals and their family members in a situation
of need. They also play a vital role in care for individuals who are facing trouble of conflict in
relationships. They assist individuals facing challenges in their old age and the individuals with
mental distress or disabilities, people who addicts of drugs and alcohol (Glasby and Dickinson,
2014). They also support physically disabled individuals having independence problems and
confronting isolation from society.
Apart from this, health and social care professionals ensure that all the individuals get high
quality of care and treated equally irrespective of their religion, gender, caste, colour, creed etc.

In health and social care practices, the professionals included are doctors, nurses, social workers,
psychologist, physiotherapist, paramedics, pharmacist, bereavement counsellors, pastoral care
workers, volunteers, speech pathologist, music therapist, etc. They all highly contribute in
providing quality care services to the patients and ensuring that they live healthy and happy life
(Glasby, 2017).
Skills and capabilities needed for health and social care professionals
In the overall health and well-being of people, health and social care professionals plays
vital role. At the time of providing care to the patients, there are several skills and competencies
which are required to possess by Health Care professionals in order to enable to treat the patients
effectively. Some of the skills and competencies are mentioned below:
Communication skills: the healthcare professionals must possess good communication
skills in order to being able to communicate well with the patients. Good communication skills
help them in interacting with the patients and their family members effectively and
understanding the issues which they face so as to provide appropriate treatment to them.
Strong work ethics: this competency of healthcare professionals help them in making the
best of situation as well as deliver best outcomes even under the complex situations (Gordon and
et. al., 2014). This competency makes the healthcare professionals to work hard and be
responsible for what they do which ultimately helps in improving the quality of care.
Team working skills: working in a healthcare setting requires to have good team working
skills in the professionals as while providing care to patients, the healthcare professionals cannot
be able to work in isolation. It is not possible to execute programs independently. Proper
collaboration with other members of staff and health care professionals will help in providing
quality care to patients and improving the health care services.
Relationship management: the healthcare professionals are needed to be effectively
communicate with patients, nurses, physicians and other staff members in order to develop good
professional relationship with them. It is an essential competency for healthcare professional as
this help in accomplishing the care goals.
All these skills and competencies are needed by health care professionals in order to
provide effective quality care to patients (Greenwood, and et. al., 2015). These skills and
competencies assist Emergency Care Practitioners and nurse specialists in providing effective
healthcare for older people, involving treating minor injuries and illness. These also helps in

fulfilling the roles needed of new referral pathways between health care and housing services. As
per the provided case study, the Sheltered Housing Officers needed knowledge of NHS services
as well as the competence to evaluate when older tenants needed referral to the Emergency Care
Practitioners and Admission Avoidance Resource Team. The above mentioned skills and
competencies helps sheltered housing officers in performing their roles and responsibilities
effectively (Griffiths and et. al., 2014).
Behavioral theories in context of health and social care professional roles
Behavioural change model: this model is referred as a preventive approach and
emphasize on the behaviour related to lifestyle that influence on health of an individual. This
model seeks to persuade people to adopt the behaviours which are associated with healthy
lifestyle, to utilise preventive Health services as well as to take accountability for their own
health. Behavioural change model promotes a medicalised perspective of health that might be
characterized through to a tendency or ability to blame the victim (Hutchinson and Jackson,
2015). This model is based on a specific belief that administering individuals with information
will alter their attitudes, beliefs as well as behaviour. However, sometimes this model has been
depicted to be ineffective in some cases as it ignores the forces in social environment that
influence health of an individual involving economic, cultural, social and political factors. This
model emphasizes on perceptions of the health professionals regarding health needs. Application
of this model by the healthcare professionals will help in transmitting the knowledge and educate
people about health. This help in increasing the knowledge of people about the factors that
enhance health. Instead of protective and preventive factors, this model emphasizes on risk as
well as takes a Band-Aid approach.
The protection motivation theory: as per this theory, the change in behaviour may be
accomplished by appealing to fears of an individual. There are three components of fear which
are stated in the theory including the probability of occurrence of event, the magnitude of harm
of demonstrated event as well as efficacy of protective response. These combine multiplicatively
in order to identify an intensity of production motivation. This results in the activity occurring as
an outcome of desire to protect an individual from danger (Lewis, and West, 2014). In the
cognitive perspective, this theory explicitly utilises the benefits and cost of existing as well as
recommended behaviour in order to predict the possibility of change. application of this theory
by healthcare professional helps in providing them with conceptual clarity about the

understanding of fear appeals. The theory mainly emphasis on cognitive processes mediating the
change in behaviour. Fear interrelate and result from the perceived severity of condition of
health. Sometimes, health and social care professionals might fear of treating patient by
analysing their health condition. This theory helps in explaining motivation through fear, risk
appraisal as well as coping appraisal (Kinley and et. al., 2014).
CONCLUSION
As per the above mentioned report, it has been concluded that health and social care
professional standards highly contribute in providing effective quality care services to the
patients. The standard of Health and social care are based on the five core principles involving
respect and dignity, be involved, support and wellbeing, compassion and responsive care. All
these 5 principles ensure fulfilment of the standards by healthcare professionals. There are
several skills and competencies that must be possessed by healthcare professionals including
team working skills, strong work ethics, effective communication, relationship management and
many others which help in performing their roles in an effective way within the healthcare
settings. Application of behavioural change model and protection motivation theory helps health
and social care professionals in performing their roles effectively and gain effective outcomes of
patient care.
