The issue of hospital readmission refers to the admission of patient who had been
already discharged, readmitted again within a particular time-period. The rates of
readmissions have been used at an increasing rate in the health services, as an outcome
measure. In hospitals, causes of readmissions are numerous, and rates vary depending on the
hospitals. It has been found that before the year 2012, the hospitals had the readmission, i.e.
20% of the Medicare within 30 days. Readmissions in the hospitals, is related with the
unfavourable outcomes of the patient’s health and increase in the medical costs. The report
stated that in U.S., the hospitals for six specified conditions, were penalised, i.e. they were
penalised for poor healthcare quality (Zawya, 2017).
Deficiencies in the healthcare services or facilities mainly contribute to the increased
rate of readmissions in the health settings. Secondly, complications of the health issues are
another cause or reason of readmission in healthcare. Pneumonia is perceived to be a severe
health problem in United States, which lead to admissions and readmissions of the patients in
the hospitals. The problems or reasons behind the readmission were not only pneumonia,
rather it was the heart failure, and acute myocardial infarctions act to be the major issues.
Increased complications due to ineffective health care, avoidance of use of hospice care, lack
of effective interventions of care. Thus, hospitals must undertake the responsibility to
provide effective care to the patients (Hussein & Ibrahim, 2019).
2. Hospitals and health professionals need to work upon identifying effective
strategies to overcome the problem of unplanned hospital admissions. Therefore, there must
be a change in the strategies or activities of healthcare to attain positive outcomes, and reduce
the admissions, and readmissions (HAAD, 2019). It will include the strategies to enhance
the management of health care organisation or setting to improve the health issues and
treatment of the patients. In context to the given article or report that mentioned about the
recently treated pneumonia in the UAE hospitals, role of health providers has been
considered important. The health providers in the UAE must focus upon the hospital
readmission reduction programmes, as a strategy to manage with the problem (McIlvennan,
Eapen & Allen, 2015).
The program i.e. Hospital Readmission Reduction program (HRRP), will penalize the
hospitals whose 30-day readmissions rates are higher. It includes the specific targeted
conditions, such as heart failure, heart attack, pneumonia, and chronic failure. The goal of
the HRRP is to incentivize and improve the life processes which facilitate reduction of the

life events, and incidents affecting health of the patients. Thus, it can be stated that hospitals
need to emphasize on the reduction of readmissions of the patients (Darrith & Della Valle, 2018)
Pneumonia in context to the hospitals in UAE may be cured using the intravenous therapy in
their practices, for the chronic health problems. Using and implementation of therapeutic
strategies are found relevant in the case of UAE hospitals and leading positive change in the
health (Lanza et all., 2017).
