Introduction
The healthcare industry consists of complex work environment that includes
hospitals, healthcare centres, clinics, community health agencies. There are various aspects to
be considered for analysing healthcare external and internal environment, for instance type of
insurance, hospitals, patient care, legal issues and healthcare providers.
(Patientnavigatortraining, 2019). The assignment will be comparing healthcare system of
United States to the healthcare system of Germany. It will also provide a detailed study of
differences, effectiveness, and disadvantages of both countries’ healthcare systems.

Comparison
The first point for the comparison includes the affordability of the organization in the
nations. Healthcare of US is more expensive when compared to healthcare fees in Germany.
The USA spends the maximum portion of its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) on healthcare
than any of the other countries in world (Christ, 2017). To contrary, Americans visiting
occurrence is quite low in clinics. According to view from scholars at University of
Michigan, the evidence suggests that in spite of spending most of the money on healthcare in
world, America does fall significantly low than Germany in the terms of the health outcome.
The pharmacist occupation is also regulated very tightly compared to the USA. In
nursing, the evidence provided that the nurses are nor that specialize neither they have
various high level of degree in USA; moreover way of workforce structure completely differs
(Callender, 2018). The average costs of healthcare per-capita of Germany system of
healthcare are lesser than half of costs in U.S (Dorning, 2016). In accordance with
Commonwealth Fund Commission, 2014, comparative to Germany, France, Australia, the
Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, U.K., and New Zealand, the U.S. has ranked last
eventually.
Another constraint for the comparison includes healthcare quality. The U.S. has
ranked fifth, considering the constraints like equity, efficiency, healthiness among citizen of
nation (Dorning, 2016). In addition, apparently degree of competition amongst medical
device’ manufacturers is high in rate in Germany in comparison to United States (jhconline,
2018). The success of the GPOs in Germany in clinical products, considering area of
preference in the terms of securing the reductions of price from the global manufacturer that

reflect into profit maximizing, resulting into clear advantage for GPOs in United States.
However, it seems that the GPOs in Germany will be moving towards policy and lessons
regarding market of United States GPO models in upcoming years (jhconline, 2018).
Difference
The key differences identified in healthcare system and policy in USA and Germany include

differences in the expense for the healthcare in both the nation. The statistics reflect that the
US is much more expensive than Germany. On the contrary, the German system overall does
a much better job of also reducing pricing for name brand pharmaceuticals (jhconline, 2018).
2. Health care insurance is another aspect to provide differentiation among the two nations.
Germany, in healthcare insurance, is different from the USA, in terms of GPOs (Group
Policy Organisations). It has been analysed that the German system is providing an absurdity
regarding the competition among the industry that includes third part purchasers and
healthcare providers seem possible while considering that the guidelines in the nation are
sparse (Pacificprime, 2019). However the financial regulation among the industry in
Germany, government approach considering top down approach. On contrary, In USA, the
access to healthcare is provided through the combination of private health insurance and
public health coverage, which are named as Medicare and Medicaid programs (Pacificprime,
2019). The GPOs of USA do as good as a job of driving down the cost of pharmaceuticals
that are generic (jhconline, 2018).
3. Healthcare expenditure is another constraint for analysing the difference between the two
nations within this sector. From the graph below, it can be assessed that USA spending is
found to be increasing as per the healthcare spending per capita of the nation, reflected in
US$ for each year, which includes consumption of all health care goods and services. The
largest amount of spending on healthcare is 9869.74 U.S. dollars. in 2016. On the contrary,
the second graph reflects that healthcare spending in Germany is less than that of USA and as
the statistics reflect the maximum spending in Germany was in year 2014 with 5278.22 U.S.
dollars. This presents the major difference, as the spending is almost half for Germany when
compared to USA (Bartleby, 2013).

Effectiveness
Germany has one of most successful and effective healthcare systems as per norms of
the quality and cost (Dorning, 2016). The USA leads the cancer research and innovative
technology. It has some of most innovative techniques of the treatment of medical of world
(Christ, 2017). Germany is well known for the comprehensive healthcare coverage through

private health insurers and sickness funds and successful policy of its own cost containment
(jhconline, 2018). On the other side, the very advanced level of technology is the greatest
strength of healthcare system of U.S. In the babies who are premature, for instance, faces
relatively better chances for survival if their birth is in United States because of the state of
the technology. Relatively the high rate of life’s expectancy afterward the age of eighty years
is also another shade of advanced state of technology of healthcare of United States. The
United States also does continue to be world leader in the innovation of pharmacy. All these
do save, expand and make better quality of the lives (Ridic, Gleason, & Ridic, 2012). Talking
about Germany, country is seeing activity and growth among competing GPOs (Group
Purchasing Organisation). Apparently, Germany’s GPOs will divert as the new supply chain
actor mature and the policymakers catch up with the fast moving market place (jhconline,
2018). The quality of healthcare in the United States does depend on the ability of patient to
pay and insurance cover, at the annual cost of thirty-six hundred per head of population (Fry,
Light, & Lawrence, 2018). Germany has comprehensive scheme of insurance of the oral
health funded in the equal of the measure by those who are in the employment and as well as
their employers (Ziller, Eaton, & Widström, 2015).
Disadvantages
Talking about the USA, the biggest disadvantage in nation’s system of healthcare is
that people do spend very much in healthcare, still they are not that healthier than other
countries that spend very less. According to data of 2016, The USA has spent 17.07 percent
of total Gross Domestic Product on healthcare. There is also a major disadvantage of the
system of healthcare of America is such that many of the individuals are underinsured or
uninsured there (Fowlerenorthcentraluniversity, 2016). In accordance to US Census Bureau,
2003, sixty percent of the American population was covered by healthcare insurance of
employer based, twenty six percent were covered by health insurance that is government

based, and rest of the fifteen percent of population was without the health insurance (Christ,
2017). Moreover, in terms of Healthcare Insurance, there three outcomes that are to be
consider. The policy is either very much expensive to meet the current financial expectations,
it does not provide enough coverage for the individual’s family, or causing them these
problems (Ayres, 2019).
The German healthcare system also has some drawbacks as the workers of healthcare
are not able to earn enough money in this nation. This reflects that the purchasing power in
the nation is lower than that of USA, which also reflects lower salary or fees provided to the
doctors for their service in Germany (Edwards & Dunn, 2019). Another drawback is their
medication policy. For instance, in Germany, every alternative option or treatment is
analysed before actual treatment from the hospitals are taken rather than depending on
counter painkiller (Klein, 2018). This may result delay in provision of the medication service
to the patients increases the risk of poor health.

Hence, the discussion undertaken in the previous segment in the report indicates the
comparative aspects of the healthcare system of two countries, Germany and the USA. The
healthcare system of United States, in comparison to the system of Germany does seem to be
fairly similar in most of the ways; however, there are some of the major differences. It was
found as a major fact that system of the healthcare of U.S.A., which is much costlier than
Germany but is high and updated in technology and innovation. The key differences
identified in healthcare system and policy in USA and Germany include expense for the
healthcare in both the nation. Health care insurance is another aspect to provide
differentiation among the two nations. Healthcare expenditure is another constraint for
analysing the difference between the two nations within this sector.
