PPT SUMMARY
Asthma is a restrictive health condition that is caused by allergy induced bronchospasms,
bronchial inflammation and increased mucous production that leads to exacerbation of the
asthmatic attack. The factors causing asthma are diverse ranging from genetic and environmental
factors to congenital and developmental factors. In asthma, there is narrowing, damage and
remodelling of the airways. There is a wide range of pharmacological and non-pharmacological
management for controlling the root causes and symptoms of Asthma. The pharmacological
management includes Glucocorticoids, Beta2-adrenoceptor agonists, anticholinergic group of
medication. The wide used medication used in the pharmacological management of asthma is
Salbutamol. Salbutamol can be administered through three chief routes such as inhalation,
nebulization and oral. The non- pharmacological management includes behavioural interventions
and teaching the knowledge based self-care strategies to the subjects. The self-care strategies are
preventive and self -management oriented. Patient education regarding the self-management and
self-monitoring strategies pertaining to asthma care and prevention is important. Other social
interventions include group education workshops and health awareness programs. These health
promoting campaigns should be regularly undertaken in order to improve the public health status
in regards to asthma and other respiratory disorders. In the case study, Stephen has a
psychosocial addiction to smoking and occasionally, he drinks alcohol as well. Moreover he
lives a sedentary lifestyle and performs very less amount of exercising for his age. This has
further deteriorated his condition and symptoms of asthma, leading to more severe exacerbation.
He is on Salbutamol which is indicated for treatment of his asthma but more behavioural and
psychosocial interventions are required to address his smoking and drinking habits.
