1HEALTHCARE: EBOLA OUTBREAK
Impact of Ebola Outbreak
Disease outbreaks with adverse implications on a major section of the population, results
in overwhelming impacts on hospitals and healthcare systems. In Africa healthcare systems for
example, the rising rates of Ebola patients admission resulted in overcrowding, a disrupted
nurse-patient ratio, increased care demands and reduced medical errors and mismanagement
(Zahid & Kribs, 2018). Further the health impacts of the disease often result in adverse effects
on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of families - which are often poorly addressed by
healthcare organizations who are already burdened with the increased wave of patient admissions
(Kamara et al., 2017).
Better Response
Providing provisions for family centered treatment where healthcare professionals are
trained with handling the mental and emotional upheaval of the patient’s family can reduce the
burden of mental health issues associated with Ebola ((Kamara et al., 2017). Establishing clear
communication and information channels in the healthcare organization and yield better
responses and better management of critical patient admissions. This can include establishment
of a separate communication team or healthcare human resource group whose main
responsibility is to communicate with patients and ensure stable patient flow, so that the rest of
the team can concentrate on handling existing critical patients (Lapão et al., 2018).
