1HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT IN WORKPLACE
Task 1
Question 1.1
Healthcare-related infections are a threat for patients, society as well as the health care
workers and professionals. There are many life-threatening diseases which are caused by
infections like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), tuberculosis and plague. These
infections have led to the development of infection control programs in all healthcare
organizations and their implementation in daily work1. Good infection control program decreases
the risks of patient’s morbidity and mortality rate, duration of hospital stay and the budget. The
infection control program comprises many components. They include educating and training the
healthcare staffs, standards, and precautionary method development, hazard identification,
reducing risks, application of aseptic techniques, sterilization of equipment and instruments and
many more. This policy of infection control is required to prevent healthcare workers to develop
any infection through transmission from the patients while caring for them. Personal protective
equipment like gloves, laboratory coats, gowns, goggles, masks must be used by the workers to
prevent the spread of airborne or blood-borne infections.
Question 1.2
The job role that I am detailing is of a nurse who needs to maintain the hygiene of the
patient, workers, and the hospital community. I have chosen the policies of infection control by
nurses. Regardless of the diagnosis and infection status, the precautionary measures need to be

implemented to all the patients at all times2. There are many ways through which infection
spreads from susceptible patients. Wound contact, droplets, and airborne pathways are the most
common ways through which infection spreads. The responsibility of a nurse is to take care of
the patients by adopting an infection control policy for the nursing profession. During the
diagnosis of the patient by the nurse, the nurse might acquire the infection from the patient that
would hinder the patient service. Unfortunately, this will lead to a decrease in the patient care
output and affect the hospital staffs to deliver their best service. So the nurses need to apply
infection control measures. There are certain principles and policies that a nurse should adhere to
for inhibiting the spread of infection among the patients. Hand hygiene, usage of personal
protective equipment like gloves and masks, safe handling and disposal of sharps and wastes and
contaminated objects and managing any kind of spillage. Each room of the patient must be
cleaned using antiseptics to prevent any spread of infection.
Question 1.3
The situation of a tuberculosis patient along with the nurses is very critical. Tuberculosis
is an airborne disease that infects the respiratory system. The pathogen Mycobacterium
tuberculosisis responsible for the disease3. The nurse who will be in charge of a tuberculosis
patient needs to wear a mask to prevent contraction of the pathogen. If this infection control
method is not applied by the nurse, it would lead to infection of the respiratory tract of the nurse
if she was not previously immunized. This would increase the number of patients suffering from

tuberculosis and subsequently death rate. Policy breach in case of infection control will have
massive consequences. The nurse delivering service to the patient will contract the disease from
the patient and suffer from the disease. This might lead to death in severe cases. This would lead
to the development of job insecurity and the nursing profession as a career for the students will
decrease. Such incidences should positively be reported to the authority to prevent infection
contraction by the nurse. The nurse should be educated regarding the policies.
Task 2
Question 2.2
The hand hygiene document can be circulated through posters or hoardings. It can also be
communicated through digital media, social platforms. Certain attracting pictures of hygiene
handwashing can attract and influence a lot of people. Social platforms like Instagram,
Facebook, Twitter, blogs, radio, and many other platforms can aid in the spreading of awareness
for hygiene maintenance. Since the document has an educational approach towards the society,
there are no such procedures to be followed for publishing the hand hygiene document. The
document should be pictorial more with fewer writings. Effective handwashing is very important
for the people who work in health care organizations as it prevents the spread of diseases. It is
also useful for the general public for maintaining good health4.

5HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT IN WORKPLACE
The position description attached is just an example. A position description (PD) is a detailed file
assigning a job to a specified role as anticipated after usual direction and instruction. It will
inform the viewer what the employee has to do, how it is achieved, and how it refers to other
roles within and outside the work unit. The position description attached consists of the award
that is provided in this specific role. There are certain websites like the Fair Work Ombudsman
Website published by the Australian government6, which offer a list of awards that are provided
by the industries and there are websites such as the Australian Industry Standards published by
the Australian government7 that offers the industrial standards.
Question 3.2
Nurses need to abide by the laws, rules, and regulations while taking care of the patients.
These legal and ethical aspects are taught to the nurses in their nursing school. Violation of any
code of nursing leads to malpractice. The main legal responsibility of a nurse is to be an advocate
for the patient in health care institutions5. The nurse forms a liaison between the patient and the
physician. A nurse has a legal right to monitor a patient and be alert and attentive for any
abnormalities or complications. A nurse is responsible for gaining consent from the patient or the
family members of the patient to proceed with the treatment procedures.

Question 3.3
The other professionals who can cooperate with the nursing role are the workers and
doctors. Both professions are dependent on the nursing job. The workers can help to resolve the
issue of contamination. They can maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the hospital
environment. This would help the nursing profession to maintain the good health of the patient
and improve the patient condition. The doctors can also help by regularly visiting the patients
and making an update of the medications. This cooperating role of the doctors and the workers
with the nurses involves different levels and sectors of the health care institution6. All the
professions in a health care institution are responsible for patient care.
Question 3.4
Nurses face various types of ethical issues in their profession while meeting the demands
and needs of the patients7. The most frequently occurring and the most stressful ethical issue is
the protection of the patient's rights, autonomy and informed consent for treatment, a pattern of
staffing, advanced care plan and decision making in various fields. Many areas can be dealt with
in a different pattern in the health sector. For example, a student nurse has been given a sudden
handover of a patient without proper sharing of information regarding the patient. The student
nurse reads the health chart which is attached to the patient’s bed. However, the student nurse
cannot understand anything about the patient’s condition nor the health chart. During such a time
the student nurse should take consultation from any senior nursing staff, or senior nurse manager
to help them in handling the patient. Since it can be seen there has been negligence in the nursing

ethical standards, thus certain important improvements should be done or taken such that no
nurse will violate those nursing standards and policies. Such as nurses should be managed by
nurses only, not by any general manager. Chief Nurses or the senior nursing staff members
should be responsible for the student nurses. Every ward should have a nurse leader who will
allocate ward sisters to lead clinical care by giving them clerical and housekeeping support.
Question 3.5
The most important nursing skill is to have effective communication skills as they are the
ones that deal with patient’s majority of the time, compared to other healthcare professionals.
That would help in the proper collection and documentation of the health concerns and the
medical history of the patient. Other than communication skills, the nurses are required to be
compassionate, caring, and culturally aware in order to garner trust between the healthcare
professionals. The nurses are required to have attention to detail and must garner accurate
decision making skills and critical thinking abilities. This would help in taking medical decisions
in emergency cases, which might save the lives of the patients. The nurses are required to also be
highly professional as well as develop efficient time management skills to help the increase the
accuracy and efficiency of the treatment procedures.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia standards clearly state the required skill sets and
knowledge that the nurses are required to obtain and employ in their practice. In order to
understand the skill set and knowledge as well as how to execute these standards in clinical
practice, one can refer to the official online site of the NMBA standards.Other additional skills,
rules and guidelines can be obtained from nursing schools, learning handbooks as well as
research journal articles.

In order to improve one's skill set, as a nurse, one can ask for feedback from their head nurses,
senior doctors and supervisors to help highlight the areas where they would require to improve in
order to provide a better service. The suggestions and the feedbacks can help in improving one's
efficiency, and also help in increased patient satisfaction and in turn contribute to the
productivity of the healthcare facility. This can help understand which skills and knowledge
areas to prioritize and focus on and recognize their strengths and weaknesses.
