Introduction
According to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2018), Aboriginals
and the Torres Strait Islander people are indigenous population of Australia. Nearly
787,000 Australians are recognised as indigenous during 2016. Of them 35%
resides in major cities (233,100 people), 24% resides in inner region (147,700
people), 22% resides in the outer region (146.100 people), 7.7% resides in the
remote areas (51,300 people) and 14% resides in very remote area (91,600
people). The main disadvantaged group are the indigenous population who are
residing in the remote and very remote areas. The main aim of this paper is to
discuss how contemporary healthcare strategy can help to improve any of the
identified health issues experienced by indigenous population of Australia. The
following paper will initiate with one contemporary healthcare strategy that can
improve the health issues of the Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islander
population. The second part of the paper will focus on the one of the prime health
issue experienced by the Aboriginals and Torres Islander population in Australia and
this would include Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This will be followed by the
demographic, social and cultural factor promoting the disease development. At last
the paper will focus on the one health perspective, effective program, and model of
care or practice for the indigenous population of Australia in order to reduce the
prevailing health inequality.
One contemporary healthcare strategy that can improve a health issue
experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Contemporary healthcare propose a strong emphasis over patient-
centeredness that signifies calling for revisiting the role of the patient. Initially the
relationship between the patient and the healthcare professional was grounded
over the paternalistic model where patient assumed a passive role. However, the
prime contemporary strategy gives importance to the role of both the patient and
healthcare professionals in the therapy planning. Under this contemporary
healthcare strategy propose the patients and their family members must exercise
their fundamental rights by taking active part and the decision making process for
therapy planning. This contemporary healthcare strategy is known designing of

patient-centred care plan through informed-decision making (Souliotis, K., 2016).
The study conducted by Barker et al. (2017) over the neurological patients availing
community healthcare services from Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander highlighted
that designing community health service planning based on the self-identified goals
of the indigenous population helps in achieving meaningful outcome in neurological
health. This person-centred outcome helps in promoting faster recovery. Similarly,
the study conducted by Gibsonet al. (2018) revealed that sharing and valuing the
voices of the aboriginal older adults in designing the healthcare therapy planning
helps in improving the physical and emotional well-being in geriatric service. Not
only the patient but the collaborative responsibilities of the all the stakeholder like
the physicians, nurses, patients and their family members is important for
designing, implementing therapy plan in order to witness improved level of care
(Ogden et al. 2017).Green et al. (2017) stated that the indigenous population in
Australia experience greater burden of both communicable and non-communicable
diseases like type 2 diabetes and cancer in comparison to the non-indigenous
Australians. The contemporary healthcare is increasing recognizing the importance
of patient-centred or person-centred healthcare approach in order to improve the
process of care delivery. Under the patient-centred healthcare approach, the
cultural, spiritual and ethnic values of the Aboriginal service users are taken under
consideration. The effective communication skills of the nursing professionals are
used in develop patient-centred care plan that is culturally competitive while
addressing all the clinical priorities of care. However, Greenet al. (2017) has
emphasize over the importance of the involvement of the genuine indigenous
leader in order to improve the health outcomes of the indigenous population. Jones,
Lattof and Coast (2017) study done over the maternity care patient from Aboriginal
background showed that after the development of patient-centered care plan by
including into active discussion with the patient, the informed decision making must
be conducted where intended outcomes of the therapy is discussed. This
contemporary healthcare service helps in improving health literacy among
Aboriginal service users and also increases access of care.
