HEALTHCARE QUALITY APPRAISAL1
Introduction
Organizational accreditation is defined as the process of certification that will assist
the organization to gain credibility, competency and authority. The organizations which are
under appropriate credentials are bound to certain official standards that they set for
themselves and are officially accredited under different accreditation bodies and hence are
often classified under “accredited certification bodies” (Ard, Beasley & Nunn, 2017). The
major role of accreditation is to attest the organization with superior quality of educational
program that will promote effective welfare, health and safety for the society. The essay will
highlight two different organizations namely Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Healthcare Information and Management Systems
Society (HIMSS) (Swider et al., 2017).
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) was
primarily released in the year 2004 as official standard for different hospitals. This
organization is a non-profitable organization that was earlier named as American College of
Surgeons in the year 1910. The authority members included in the organization had focused
on the development of systemic standardization within hospitals that not only included the
concept of severe care hospitals but also included development of different healthcare
organizations that comprise of nursing facilities, healthcare provider’s services, doctor’s
office, behavioural treatment services and office-grounded surgery centres
(Jointcommission.org, 2019). In the year 1990, the name of the organization was shortened
and changed to “The Joint Commission (TJC)”. Different accreditation standard was set by
The Joint Commission (TJC) that would depend on the yard stick. The yard stick will be used
as the standard in contradiction of which an individual will compare and examine anything.

The standard of accreditation will vary from one individual or requirement to another
depending on the organization and demand. TJC has different standard of accreditation for
the patent who is suffering from heart attack or for the patient who is admitted to the
emergency department. The complication of contemporary information management leads to
the amplified significance of the therapeutic library by highlighting the necessity for effective
leadership and management by the therapeutic librarian. Therefore, according to the recent
developments within information disciplines and the requirement for contemporary and
authoritative evidence through the hospital requires a novel appreciation and obligation of the
therapeutic library that was focused by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (Pfeiffenberger, 2016). In the recent years, the primary focus of the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations was on the patient safety and care
within the hospital setting that would focus on the sentinel events that result in either loss of
functional activity or death of the patient due to continuous illness or injury. Various
hospitals attempt to fulfil the standards and principles established by the JCAHO and library
facilities are enclosed within the Management of Information (IM) segment within the
Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals. The standards covered under the
JCAHO was updated and modified in the year 1994 that had focused on the complete hospital
function rather than only focusing on the individual standard of departments. Three days
extensive inspection is conducted by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO) that is considered as one of the most significant and prestigious
accreditation agency (Mosadeghrad, Akbari & Yousefinezhadi, 2017).
Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is
considered as non-profitable organization that primarily focus on the objective to encourage
the preeminent use of management system and information technology (IT) within the
