Introduction
Nursing leadership is an essential pillar in providing quality healthcare services. The
leadership of nurses and other healthcare workers is influenced by a variety of factors.
Nurse leaders play a very massive role in helping newly graduate nurses to adapt to
their new working environment and to also improve their nursing practice (Badzek,
Henaghan, Turner and Monsen, 2013). Some of the factors that impact on nursing
leadership include resource availability, working environment, motivation and
remuneration as well as training and coaching. Nurse leaders also have to ensure that
they adhere to the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. They
should delegate duties while considering the scope of practice of the newly registered
nurses to ensure that the safety of the patient is not compromised (Huber, 2013). The

nurses should also offer leadership and support to other inexperienced nurses. This
paper, therefore, discusses the various issues and factors which influences the nurse
leaders as they perform their day to day activities. The article also uses the Gibbs
model of reflection to reflect upon the situation of Mr Sami.
Issues and factors impacting on nurse leaders and professional practice
As a Nurse Unit Manager(NUM), I would approach this situation with confidentiality
to help to restore the confidence of Sami. The incidence involving Sami and the
registrar nurse affected his self-confidence and productivity at work. Kim, therefore,
needs to be guided accordingly and to be offered to counsel to recover from this
incidence. Nurses who are beginning their practice face various challenges before
they fully align themselves to the needs of the workplace. NUM, as well as other
leaders in the hospital, should offer support and guidance to the new registered nurses
for them to perform their roles properly (Numminen et al., 2016). Before this
situation, Sami had completed all her roles competently. She was very confident, and
she believed that she knew everything that she needed to understand in her working
place. It was inappropriate for the registrar nurse to shout at the Sami because she was
new to the cardiac arrest ward and this means that she was acquitted to most of the
procedures and equipment`s used in this ward. As the NUM, I would advise Sami that
it was not the intention of the registered nurse to be rude and rough to her. The
registrar nurse was under pressure to save the patient by resuscitating him. The
registrar nurse, therefore, expected that the nurse who was assigned to that ward is
familiar with all the needs of the department. The registrar nurse must be invited to a
meeting with Sami to reconcile them. The registrar nurse can, therefore, act as a guide

to Sami as she continues to gain knowledge and skills in the cardiac arrest ward. RN
standards of practice apply in this case in various forms. One of the standards that
apply in this case is the Standard number three. This standard states that a registered
nurse is responsible and accountable for ensuring that they are safe and can continue
practice (Zaccagnini and Pechacek, 2019). A registered nurse should not accept to be
assigned duties that are outside their scope of practice.
Furthermore, RN`s are expected to manage themselves continuously and respond in
situations where there may arise a concern about the capability of the practice of
another nurse. This, therefore, explains why NUM is bound to intervene in Samis
situation and to assist her in attaining the right knowledge to perform her duties
properly. The registered nurses are also expected to provide information and offer
education to other nurses as well as any additional support that may be necessary.
Furthermore, nurse leaders are expected to protect new nurses from workplace
bulying. Workplace bullying is a very pervasive issue in the healthcare sector. It
destroys the social life of new nurses at the workplace. Most of the times, nurses bully
others to maintain control of their work environment. Nurse leaders should, therefore,
protect Sami from such tendencies

Legal and ethical boundaries
The newly registered nurses face a variety of challenges. One of these challenges is
the increasing number of patients who have very complex and multiple conditions
(Keyko, Cummings, Yonge and Wong, 2016). This may be against the expectation of
