1. Give your own definition of wellness with references from various sources.
The term wellness can be defined as the active process of developing awareness of along with
making choice towards a healthy as well as fulfilling life. According to WHO, wellness can be
defined as a state of complete mental, physical as well as social wellbeing and is more than free
from illness and hence can be defined as a dynamic process of change and growth. This is
consistent with the biopsychosocial wellness paradigm, which addresses wellness and illness
physiological, psychological and social causes, and the relationships between these causes. It
varies from the conventional medical paradigm that describes health as the absence of disease or
sickness, and stresses the role of clinical diagnosis and intervention. The definition of the WHO
specifically connects health with well-being, conceptualizing health as a human right that needs
physical and social capital to attain and sustain it. 'Wellbeing' refers to a favourable condition as
opposed to bad, portraying wellness as a favourable expectation. As per this definition, health
has been defined by Ranjan (2017), as resource of everyday life instead of being an object of
living. In this view wellbeing is a way of living healthy, emphasizing the link between health and
social engagement.
However one of the major criticisms of this point of view of wellness is that it is highly
unrealistic since this approach has failed to consider the temporary issues associated will ill
health but also the commendable number of people living across the world who are living with
chronic illnesses and disabilities. Iconomescu et al. (2013) introduced a new concept of wellness
as 'the capacity to adjust and control yourself,' which incorporates people's capacity to adjust as a
key to wellness to their situation. This also considers the contextual aspect of wellness; based on
the situation and their preferences, what safety and well-being entails can vary from one person
to the next. Some see that as a weakness to wider health concepts on the grounds that well-being

is neither objective nor measurable. Another drawback of this strategy is that it is strongly
individualistic and takes no account of wider health determinants. Health responsibility is seen as
being individual rather than communal, with no room for upholding it as a human right.
2. Elaborate the SIX dimensions of wellness with applications of each dimension in your
daily life.
The six dimensions of wellness has been developed by Dr Hettler that identifies the
occupational, physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual and social wellness to be the sex key
components of wellness. While developing the model, the fact that no right or wrong way of
staying well or no ideal balance between all the demotions of wellness is there (Strout et al.,
2018). The importance of various dimensions can vary considerably from person to person; some
individuals may derive their greatest feeling of satisfaction or purpose from their work, while
others place greater emphasis on their physical health, spirituality, or family relationships.
Physical wellness
The physical aspect recognizes that routine physical exercise is necessary. Physical development
promotes knowledge about diet and nutrition while at the same time discouraging tobacco use,
drugs and excessive alcohol use. Optimum health is achieved by mixing healthy fitness and
dietary habits. When one walks on the path of health, he/she must continue to spend time
developing muscle strength, resilience and stamina while still taking safety measures so that
he/she can navigate the journey safely through personal self-care and good use of a treatment
program (Daugherty et al., 2017). The physical aspect of health includes personal responsibility
as well as treatment for minor illnesses along with awareness of the need for professional
medical services. One should be able to track his/her own vital signs by following the wellness

path, and recognize the alert signs in your body. He/she should understand the relationship
between good diets and how the body works, and enjoy it (Ramsey & Aagard, 2018). Very
frequently, the physical rewards of looking good and feeling great contribute to the
psychological gains of increased self-esteem, self-control, motivation and purpose. When it
comes to implement physical wellness in my daily life, I ensure that every day I exercise for at
least 20 minutes. When I was a teen, over consumption of junk food had resulted in health
conditions like high blood pressure and obesity. Hence in order maintain physical wellness, I
make sure to eat healthy by avoiding soft drinks, fries foods, excessive amount of sweets and
processed meats. Additionally, I consume fresh green vegetables and 3 servings of fruits on a
regular basis. Moreover, I abstain from alcohol or tobacco consumption and ensure to get at least
7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.
Emotional wellness
The emotional aspect acknowledges knowledge of one's emotions and their recognition.
Emotional wellness is the degree to which one's life feel optimistic and excited. It requires the
capacity to control one's emotions and associated activities like the rational assessment of one's
limits, the growth of flexibility, and the ability to cope with stress effectively. The person who
maintains emotional wellness can maintain positive relationships with others. Being mindful of,
and embracing, a wide range of emotions between oneself and others is important to well being.
He/she is able to share emotions honestly on the wellness path along with controlling emotions
efficiently (Strout et al., 2016). An emotionally stable individual is able to arrive at personal
preferences and judgments based on emotions, opinions, beliefs, and actions synthesis. He/she
will live and operate individually, while recognizing the value of finding and appreciating other
people's assistance and help. He/she should be able to establish interdependent relationships with
