HENRY BOOKS COMPANY 3
Executive summary
Henry Books is a retailer and reseller of new and used specialty books both high-valued,
used popular books, and new publications. Some of the books are large and outsized editions. In
addition, Henry books resells and buys on consignment and privately-held book collections small
and large. Currently the Henry books is located in three locations Rockford, Milwaukee, and the
main location in Elgin, IL. In addition, each of the location handles their own operations. Henry
now wants to bring everybody to being one organization instead of three. Also it is the will of
Henry to have a webpage that supports online marketing and sales.
This paper will high the required network type that suits Henry books reseller and
retailer. Also the paper will high the required network topology both physical and logical. Lastly,
the paper will recommend the best server for the organization and a preliminary network
architecture.
Introduction
Computer networks nowadays takes a very important place in a business. It is very critical for an
organization such as Henry’ books to use the latest technology available if they need to excel in
their operations. The major objective of this module is to highlight the best network design that
Henry books can implement; this will include the best network type, the best logical and physical
topology and the best network infrastructure.
Comparison
From the case study, it is evident that Henry Books needs a new network design. Most
case studies have implemented a top-down approach. This usually begins with a focus to the
requirements for the organization while allowing future needs of the network to be considered

and accounted for. One of the reasons as to why this paper has not this approach is because this
approach needs to consider all the services and applications of the company. Second, this design
can result to inappropriate network design. One of the reason as to why this paper settles for
hierarchical type of network design is due to diving the network into discrete layers which
provides specific functions
Network type
There are various types of network types like Local Area Network (LAN), Storage Area
Network (SAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Campus Area Network (CAN), and Metropolitan
Area Network (MAN). PAN is a type of network organized for use by an individual. LAN is a
group of associated devices which share a common communication link. MAN interconnects
computer resources in on geographical area. SAN interconnects storage devices.
The headquarter location, Elgin needs to implement both SAN and LAN. Milwaukee
location needs to employ the use of CAN type of network while the Rockford location needs to
implement a simple Local Area Network. All these locations needs then to be interconnected to
form a common pool of resources which are manageable. This in turn forms a MAN type of
network (Hathawa, 2014).
Justification
The Elgin location implements both SAN and LAN. SAN type of network is
implemented to give Henry books a dedicated high speed of network which will offer a shared
pool of storage devices. This is where high end servers needs to be located. This will assists in
flexibility management; the organization will be in apposition to view all the organization
records. With SAN, efficiency and security is guaranteed. Since there are three locations, SAN
type of network needs to be implemented in this case by under Synchronous Optical Network

(SONET) technology; SONET Network topology offers the benefit of high resiliency and
support advanced technologies such as fiber channel (Kotenko & Skormin, 2017). SAN
connection will as shown by figure one below
Figure 1: SAN implementation throughout the three locations
Local Area Network in every location will be used to connect various users. CAN type of
network at Rockford location instead of LAN is implemented due to the many units in that
station. CAN is specifically used to connect various units together as one (Kurose & Ross, 2018).
Network topology
Network topology is the arrangement of a network where all the nodes are connected
with each other using connecting lines or network links
Logical topology
To meet the technical and business needs of Henry Company, this paper goes for a Cisco
SAFE type of logical topology. This is a type of topology that delivers a defense-in-depth by
positioning devices through the network by using what Cisco refer to as collaborative
capabilities between platforms. Cisco safe topology deploys multiple layers, under one strategy

and administration. The logical topology for Henry books will be divided into three functional
areas which are service provider edge, the enterprise campus, and an enterprise edge. The
enterprise campus will specifically contain all the functional areas which will be required for
independent operations with one campus location. The service provider edge will included to
represent MAN and the internet connection. The enterprise edge will specially contain all the
function required for the communication between the three locations and the enterprise edge.
Each of three functional areas will be included in the access, distribution and the core layers
(Robertazzi, 2012). This is as shown by the figure below

Physical topology
A physical topology in this case assists on understanding the networking concepts,
efficient utilization of networked components and resources, error or fault detection is also made
easy using network topologies.
This module will go for a star wired and wireless type of topology as it is the widely used
type of topology. A physical start topology utilizes a centralized type of architecture which uses
a centralized connecting of devices like a server or a manageable switch for the wired and the
wireless connections. With a start type of physical topology, all the network connections will be
located in a single place, which in turn will help in reducing redundancy and making it easier to
troubleshot and reconfiguring the network devices. In addition, with star type of topology
devices can be added and removed very easily. Also using star type of topology it will allow the
company to integrate into GPON type of physical design in future as it is still in its design phase
(Byrne, 2017).
Server needs
Henry Books Company needs to implement windows server 2016. This is the current
Microsoft based operating system which was developed alongside windows 10. The server
includes a number of new features which are core foundation, enhanced security capability, and
enhanced identify management. Some of the new features of windows server 2016 are a nano
server, windows container, active directory domain services, active directory federation services,
PowerShell 5.0, storage spaces, and hyper-v feature. With windows server 2016, Henry will be
in a position to implement a centralized systems. To implement windows server 2016, henry

need to have a computer machine with minimum disk space of 32 GB with an additional of 4GB
for GUI installation. The processor requirements needs to have a minium of 1.4 GHz or what is
known as AM64 processor. In addition, windows server 2016 the disk controller needs to be
express compliant and the 512 MB ECC supported memory modules (Hathawa, 2014).
Preliminary network architecture
Henry Books Company needs to implement a cisco hierarchical type of network
architecture. This is the industry widely adopted model as it is reliable, cost-effective, and
efficient. One of the reasons as to why this paper goes for this type of network architecture is
due to its three design principles. First is the flexibility nature of the architecture; a hierarchal
design has the ability to modify portions of the organization network, increase capacity without
having to go through major forklift upgrade, and add new devices. Second is the resiliency
nature of the design; a hierarchical network infrastructure has the ability to remain available for
use under both abnormal and normal conditions. Abnormal conditions are the times of software
and hardware failure while the normal conditions are times of expected traffic flows and traffic
patterns as well as unusual traffic patterns, unplanned events, at times of denial of access
whether intentional and unintentional. Lastly is the modularity nature of a hierarchical network
design; hierarchical network infrastructure has the ability to separate the various Henry Books
company functions that exists on the network into modules. Also the network is easier to design
(Ed-Tittel, 2002).
A hierarchical network infrastructure in this case will involve dividing the organization
network into three discrete layers which are the access layer, the core layer, and the distribution
layer. The access layer in this case will provide workgroup with access to the organization
network, the distribution layer in this case will provide a policy based connectivity and control to

the boundaries between the core and the access layers. The core layer will provide transport
between the distribution manageable switches within the enterprise campus of the logical design.
Figure 3 below shows a hierarchical network implementation for Henry Books Company
(Vasudevan, 2015)
Figure 3: Hierarchical network infrastructure
SONET technology is what is needed in this case to connect the main SAN network in the
headquarter office to the other two locations.
Performance estimating
To estimate the performance of the proposed design three techniques were utilized which
are throughput, delay, and channel utilization. By estimation, a hierarchical network design has a
throughput of 10Mbps on a busy environment which is quite better for a company such as this
one. In addition, the responsiveness of the network is around 20 milliseconds in a very busy
environment. Channel utilization i.e. the percentage of time busy for a hierarchical design is

when the network has over 1000 network users accessing the same resource at the same time
(Pkohriyal, 2012) .
