Importance of Surveillance System in The Hospital
A hospital surveillance system is a critical, systemic collection, analysis, and
interpretation of data relating to health that is required in planning, application, and assessment
of public health services (Groseclose & Buckeridge, 2017). The surveillance system offers
scientific and factual data that is key to informed decision making and significant public health
activities. Therefore, the primary objective of the surveillance system is to offer statistics to
guide interventions.
The success of all health initiatives within a hospital setting is highly dependent on the
aggregation of health-related data. Without accurate and current data, disorders can be
misinterpreted; health programs do not meet their set goals, and resources are not allocated
correctly (Groseclose & Buckeridge, 2017). Using a surveillance system, medical practitioners
can comprehend the present and emerging infectious and non-infectious diseases. Continued
data collection is required to monitor new illnesses that are a threat to the health of a population
and the fluctuations in virulence and spreading of already existing diseases (Groseclose &
Buckeridge, 2017). Therefore, a functioning surveillance system is key to the accomplishment of
hospital initiatives.
Surveillance system helps collect facts on determinants and distribution of diseases that is
vital in helping policymakers and government official to come up with informed decisions on
what resources to incorporate to attain the best results (Schmidt et al., 2015). Besides, a
surveillance system affects the health of a population by capturing the population's data and
generating information that is important to medical practitioners and stakeholders in improving
the quality of their decisions (Schmidt et al., 2015).
