Abstract
The use of Internet of Things is increasing day by day in terms of security related issues
and luxury. Most home based projects are becoming popular as we are advancing to the new era
of Bluetooth connected devices such as fans, electrical appliances and fans. There three major
causes of road accidents are drunken driving, driver drowsiness, and excessive speed.
Keywords: Internet of Things (IoT)
Introduction
Nowadays, there is an increased number of road accidents which has resulted to the loss
of human lives and government property. Most government have employed a number of methods
to curb road accidents among them being developing strict public transport rules but still the
number of road of accidents continue to rise day by day. Road accidents can be avoided by
understanding psychological state of drivers, drowsiness state of the vehicle driver, drunk driving
and rush driving. The major concept of this paper is implementing Internet of Things to prevent
road carnage (BANU, 2018).
Objectives
This paper is aimed at implementing Internet of Things on our roads. The objectives of the
paper are summarized below;
1. Establishing head movement monitoring system for drowsiness detection
2. In case of driver drowsiness detecting and alerting the driver through a wake call
3. Locating accident location using GPRS for help and rescue
4. In case of drunkenness detecting and alerting the road officers via call
5. Displaying all the activities of the designed system on LCD display
6. To review Internet of Things architectures applicable to traffic congestion

7. To develop a very simple prototype of sustainable Internet of Things architecture which
can be used in major cities (Liang, 2015)
Problem statement
Despite the fact that concept of internet of Things have been studied since 1989, the term
IoT has been used for the first time in 1999. During this year, a coffee pot, a camera, and a
toaster have been remotely controlled via the internet in distinct environment. One of the
implementation of IoT is the host-oriented communication model; this is an IP-based model
employed by the traditional internet architecture (Ravate Shubhangi, 2019). Another application
is the service-oriented communication model where a client requests execution of a service using
an ID identified rather than the location LOS. This means that the use of Internet of Things is
becoming part of our daily life. In addition, the usage of digital and electronic devices has
increased by more than 13 billion, which is equals to two devices per one person. A suitable
example of the use of IOT is smart home. The use of Internet of Things on our roads will reduce
death rate by fifty percent (Sivaiah, 2018).
Research questions
1. What are the major causes of road accidents across the world
2. How can Internet of Things be applied in curbing road accidents
3. What IoT architecture can suite road accident management
