INTRODUCTIONHuman Resource Management (HRM) is an important function that is performed in everyorganisation. It is a process through which firm manages its workforce by anticipating theirneeds. Many functions are included in HRM such as recruitment, selection, training anddevelopment, performance evaluation, maintaining healthy relations between employer andemployees etc. The major advantage of this concept is that it administers an opportunity tomanager to determine employee needs and formulate policies accordingly to satisfy them(Armstrong and Taylor., 2014). In the present assignment, chosen organisation is Tesco which isthe largest grocery retailer in UK. The assignment covers different functions of HRM and itspurpose. It also includes merits plus demerits of recruitment approach as well as benefits ofHRM practices. Apart from this, significance of good employee relation and key elements ofemployment legislations is defined. At last, application of various HRM practices at workplace isincluded in this project. TASK 1 P1 Purpose and functions of human resource managementHRM is concerned with recruitment and selection of the best suitable candidate andadministering them appropriate training so that their skills can be enhanced plus they enable tocontribute in attainment of goals and objectives of company. The major purpose of HRM is todetermine manpower needs of organisation and fulfil the same by hiring skilled andknowledgeable candidates. Furthermore, the manager of human resource department isresponsible for managing all activities that are conducted within firm. In Tesco, manageridentifies skill needs of manpower and design appropriate training programme for them so thattheir potential can be increased. This assists employees in performing their duties andresponsibilities in better way (Berman and et. al., 2012). Managers organise various activities inorder to increase motivation of employees so that they feel satisfied with their job and workhappily. Functions of HRM:Recruitment and selection: It is the major function of Human Resource Managementwhich is performed in every firm. In Tesco, human resource manager anticipates present andfuture manpower needs and fulfil those by hiring skilled candidates. A definite criteria is set foreach job and according to that, individuals are selected. Applications are invited by firm so that1

interested candidate may apply for the job. Process of recruitment provides an opportunity tothose individuals who have good skills and capabilities. Hiring of competent candidates helps thecompany in an effective attainment of goals and objectives.Training and development: It is very important to provide training and development toemployees so that they can do their work in proper way (Boella and Goss-Turner, 2013). Thisprovides an opportunity to employees to improve their existing skills and learn new one. Themanager of Tesco determines skill needs of their manpower and design training programmeaccording to that. It helps in increasing the potential of employees and they are encouraged towork towards attainment of targets and objectives of Tesco. It will also assist in increasingproductivity and performance of both employer as well as employee. Maintaining healthy work environment: It is the main responsibility of every businessorganisation to provide healthy work environment to their workforce. This will help in increasingmotivation level of workers and in encouraging them to perform well. So, it is required by themanager of Tesco to administer healthy work environment to their workforce so that they feelsatisfied and work happily with the organisation.P2 Strengths and weaknesses of recruitment and selection process The process of recruitment and selection is related with hiring of candidates that bestmeets the requirements of firm. Manpower is an important resource of an organisation andhighly contributes in improving productivity and profitability of company. Tesco uses bothinternal and external process of recruitment for hiring appropriate candidate in firm. Humanresource manager is responsible for selecting an individual who have all the skills that arerequired to fulfil job position. They should have the potential to identify the best candidates fromlarge pool of applicants. It assists in attaining goals and objectives of Tesco in an effective andefficient manner (Boselie, 2010). There are some strengths and weaknesses that are associatedwith approaches of recruitment which are defined as follows:Internal source of recruitmentIn internal recruitment process, firm selects suitable individual from within the firm.Managers first determine the skills and performance of existing employee. If they find themsuitable, they will recruit them for that vacant position. Managers do it by circulating noticewithin firm so that interested candidate can apply for the post.
