INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is defined as the process of recruiting, developing and
maintaining appropriate human resource at the work place for the efficient accomplishment of
the organizational goal in the effective manner. HRM is the art of managing the man power at
the work in such a manner that they give the best possible efforts in the achievement of the
business objective(Cascio, 2015). Report will present the roles and responsibilities of the human
resource function in the Tesco company. Tesco is the multinational groceries and merchandise
retailer and established in the Welwyn Garden city, England. Study will evaluate the various
human resource practices such as work force planning, training and development, performance
management and reward system. Report will high light the importance of the employee relation
in respect to influencing human resource management decision making.
TASK 1
1.overview of the company
Tesco is the British Multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer and it was
founded on 1919 by the Jack Cohen. Tesco has 6,569 shops which are located across the United
Kingdom, Ireland, India, Malaysia and Thailand. Tesco diversified its business in so many areas
such as retailing of books, clothing, electronic, furniture, toys, petrol and Telecoms etc.
Human resource management
Human resource management is the process of making effective utilization of human
resource for the attainment of the organizational goals efficiently. It is also defined as the
important part of management which manage the people at the work place and also maintain the
good relationship among them(Bratton and Gold, 2017).
2.Purpose of the human resource management functions
The main purpose of the human resource management is to coordinate of an
organization's people for attaining the organizational objectives and fulfilling staffing needs.
Human resource management includes various functions such as recruitment, selection, training
and development, performance management and reward management. HRM also maintain the
employee satisfaction(DeCenzo, Robbins and Verhulst, 2016). Human resource management
functions fulfill the various objective of the Tesco such as recruiting the employees, training
workers, maintaining better relationship and interpreting employment laws. To ensure that
organization runs effectively human resource management functions work willingly in the Tesco

company. In the Tesco, human resource management functions manage transformation and
change by providing various training and development activities to employees for encouraging
them towards the achievement of the business objective of Tesco.
Role and Responsibilities of the human resource management in the Tesco
Human resource management includes various functions such as staffing, human
resource development, compensation and benefit, safety & health and employee relations, all of
these functions plays an important role in the success of the organizational firms.
Staffing: This function of human resource management plays an important role in the
achievement of the business objective through providing qualified persons which are designated
along with proper place and timing. Tesco can get such qualified employees on time when its
human resource department performs effective staffing functions.
Human resource development: the roles and responsibilities of this function is to providing
retaining and development to the employee along with the career planning for managing the
changes in the Tesco company. This function is design to provide the employees with required
skill and knowledge for performing their current job position in the Tesco(Toner, 2017).
Compensation and benefit: This function of HRM is responsible for providing the
compensation and benefit to employees. It is defined as all the rewards that are obtained by the
employee as a result of his employment and also provides the various benefits for better
performance of the employees in the Tesco.
Safety and health: it is the important function of the human resource management because it
plays an important role in preventing the employees from health and safety issues. Employees
are the assets of the Tesco and their good health in a safe working environment helps in
increasing the productivity and the effectiveness of the company(Nankervis and et.al.,2016).
Employees relation: it is the crucial factor of the human resource department which plays an
important role in maintaining harmonious relationship between the management and employees
towards the attainment of the business objective of the Tesco.
3. Approaches of the work force planning
Work force planning defines as the process of ensuring an organization has current and
future access to the human resource which are required to perform effectively. It induces two
main approaches such as work load analysis and manpower analysis
