INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is the strategic approach to the effective and efficient
management of people in a company or organization such that they help their business gain a
competitive advantage. It is designed to maximize employee performance in service of an
employer's strategic objectives. Marks and Spencer Group plc is a major British multinational
retailer with headquarters in London, England, that specialises in selling clothing, home
products and food products, mostly of its own label. This report is gives an highlight of
aspects included in HRM and it is divided in two parts. First part describes the
responsibilities and significance of HR and the second part describes the legislations and
engagement of employees and other documents that are needed at the time of selection of
candidate such as job letter, person specification etc.
1.0 Introduction to company
Mission
They have set their mission with one aim which is to offer quality that can be
accessed to everyone by offering and dealing in more range of products.
Core values
Company has built their brand on the basis of these values which includes assured
quality, value, service, innovation and trust.
Business Objectives
Objective of the company is to make sure that they are able to form their business into
sustainable one by achieving consistent growth so that they can also satisfy the needs of their
shareholders as well as stakeholders.
2.1 The purpose of the HR function and the key roles and responsibilities of the HR function
There are several areas in which HR of company serves their function such as
requirement for staff, compensation, providing benefits, appraising their performance and
working under compliance of law. Apart from this they also tend to make sure to keep up the
use of resources up to their potential. They have to keep a check on their labour, machines
and raw materials so that work can be done with efficiency and goals of company can be met.
One of the responsibilities of HR of Marks and Spencer also includes to maintain and keep
the relationship between employer and employee so that there are less chances of conflicts
which does not ruin the productivity of work. Some of the functions that are involved in the

work of HR are screening the candidates, taking on tests with them (Mousa and Othman,
2020).
Staffing Needs-
Department of HR is mainly known for their finding and filling up the position that
are required with the right persons. They have to look for empty positions for which they
have to undergo processes such as assessing the skill set for that position. On the basis of that
they will screen test candidates, conduct tests for them and judge them on the basis of
interview. Everything done is as per the legal guidelines coded by law. They make sure that
everyone keeps up with the levels of communication as even the transfers and promotion in
company is controlled by HR of business (Meijerink and Keegan, 2019).
Compensation-
It is the responsibility of HR to form a structure of company as per the current market
trends so that they can offer employees pay check as per the current scale of market. This is
done in order to give them compensation as per the market factors and on the basis of these
measures employees get satisfaction on their job. Policies are drafted by HR for
compensating them and it is drafted on the basis of Fair Labour Standards Act and minimum
wage is offered as per that. Payroll is set up as per the pay structure so that they can have the
assistance to it (Trullen, Bos‐Nehles and Valverde, 2020).
Benefits-
It is one of the other responsibilities of HR to develop a beneficial program for
employees so that they can retain them for a long period of time. Benefits can be offered such
as health and dental care, retirement plan etc. HR sets these plans as per the interest of
employees so that benefits offered to them satisfied their need. They even work on figuring
out the way in which they can help save Marks and Spencer save money in this procedure
(Liu, Qingqing and Liu, 2021).
2.2 significance that HR plays in acquiring talent to meet business objectives
There are various key roles that are played by HR and with the help of that they form
up many strategies which helps them to recruit and retain top level of employees and projects
