INTRODUCTION
Human resource management has been emerged out as the crucial factor in each and
every business due to rising complexities in the working environment. The need of human
capital as business owners, employees and consumers is worth noting (Bennett and Ho, 2014).
Seeking help from the efforts of the humans, policies, strategies as well as procedures are being
developed effectively. Concerning this, the main aim of the research is to evaluate the human
resource management of British Airways. As an Assistant human resource manager of British
Airways, the main function is to set up all activities in relation with the human resource of the
firm. The company was established in the year 1974 and is one of the successful airline
industries around the world. From some periods, British Airways has recognized the fact that
there is a need of alternation in their strategies. In this regards, they have taken into
consideration, customer service planning to accomplish the desired aims and objectives (British
Airways, 2007).
Furthermore, the human resource management team of the organization is engaged in
offering training to the employees and several other processes of recruitment as well as selection.
Consequently, as an assistant manager the analytical report will be developed so as to provide
help to the firm to gain competitive edge. Moreover, the report will also analyze the usefulness
of varied practices related to human resource management in increasing the level of revenue and
output. Other than this, significance of employee relation will be assessed and scrutiny of the
employment legislations that influence the decision making of HRM of British Airways will be
conducted.

P1 Main purpose and the functions of HRM
The main focus of human resource management is to reap out best from the employees
and thus, they develop, plan and manage the workers so as to achieve the best outcome for the
organization. The main concern of HRM is to utilize the resources within the firm. With the help
of human resource management, British Airways makes efforts in decreasing the gap amid the
employer and employee. It also helps in building relationship with each other. Thus, the main
purpose of human resource management is being defined as follows:
Helps in enriching the employees by arranging training programs

Supports in creating healthy relations amid the employees (Chan and Kuok, 2012)
Increasing the efficacy of the human asset in relation with the productivity and
performance
And finally, planning about the human asset of the firm
It is quite essential for the British Airways to have effective Human resource
management in place, as it is related with the travel and tourism industry. Further, it becomes
necessary for the company to make improvement in the skills, competencies as well as efficiency
of the workers. This pertains to the fact that through this they can achieve competitive advantage
in the airline market. Thus, the main function of British Airways that can provide talent skills
appropriate for fulfilling the objectives of the firm is described underneath:
Human resource planning – Management of human capital can be done by proper
planning. The human resource manager of the British Airways identifies the need of man
power through human resource planning function (Hoque, 2013). The firm requires
numerous staff for different levels and therefore, HR planning helps in meeting out such
demand.
Recruitment and selection – Talking in reference with the Airline industry, recruitment as
well as selection is considered as an integral part. British Airways carried out recruitment
and selection under the three level processes. The very first level is screening of the
application form than interviewing and personal discussion and lastly, taking varied
aptitude tests. Thus, the major role of performed by the HR department.
Compensation and benefits – Employee work within the firm in return of getting certain
amount of benefits and compensation. In other words, they are monetary and non-
monetary factors that motivate the staff members to achieve the higher results. British
Airways also offer competitive compensation to their employees and offers various other
benefits to retain potential workers within the company such as free flying tickets,
recognition, package holidays, monetary appraisal, certified courses as well as gifts and
many more (Aswathappa, 2008).

The process of recruitment and selection plays a crucial role in British Airways due to
their need of having too much man power at varied levels. For example, crew members, on-
board staff, pilots, front desk officers, ground level staff and many others. All these employees
