1HUMAN RIGHTS
The purpose of the following research essay is to discuss on social issues or human rights
in New Zealand. Diversity is one of the most precious treasures of this country and people
belonging to different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. The aborigines or Maori people are one
of the oldest living tribal people in the country. The federal government of New Zealand has also
taken many steps to protect the rights of the people. In order to do so, they have designed some
laws for the benefits of the people as well. Still the general rights of many individuals are in
great danger indeed (Donnelly and Whelan 2018). Therefore, this is regarded as a great problem
for the people of New Zealand. Indigenous population in New Zealand has been deprived of their
facilities and it has always been in deep doubt because of several reasons. In this essay, the
purpose would be to find out the reasons for these human rights issues and go through a proper
research work. The extent of the problem will have to be found out and assess the conditions of
the individuals in the interior regions of the country (Habermas 2018). The proper situations of
the individuals will be very much important to consider since their rights and their protection is
highly dependent on these issues.
Human rights have always been a great matter of concern for the government of
Australia. The social issues are very crucial to assess because the freedom of the individuals will
be very crucial in all the areas. The different social issues or human rights issues will be
researched in this essay to find out the actual scenario. The two human rights issues that would
be selected in this paper are the security if women within the constraints of society and the
overall condition of the tribal people in the country (Donnelly and Whelan 2018). These two
issues are quite common in many countries indeed. This is why the government will need to
address this issue with much seriousness (Peters and Wolper 2018). One thing must be said in
this scenario that New Zealand has often been considered as one of the leaders in the human

rights for a long time. However, this reputation has come to a great risk indeed. This is why the
United Nations is also very much worried about the critical condition as well (Habermas 2018).
They are of the opinion that New Zealand will have to take the proper actions so they can deal
with this situation in real time.
The federal government of New Zealand had implemented the human rights acts for the
benefits of all the people in the country. Critics have pointed out that these rights were applicable
for almost all the people in the country. New Zealand has been included in many treaties
regarding the human rights by the United Nations (Peters and Wolper 2018). The two acts
implemented by the federal government of the country are New Zealand Human Rights Act 1993
and New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 (Ryan, Ravenswood and Pringle 2014). The legislation
of the country supports the well being and equal treatment for all the people within the country.
However, this situation has been put into jeopardy in the recent times. So, the federal
government of New Zealand and the United Nations are trying to revive the situation with their
utmost efforts (Habermas 2018). New Zealand has always been very much proactive of the
human rights factors in the country. This is the reason they prepared the national Universal
Periodic Review (UPR) in the 2009 and presented it to the United Nations Human Rights
Council headquartered at Geneva. This entire process had gained the praise of many countries
because of their efforts to protect the human rights (Peters and Wolper 2018). They realized that
the equal society and providing equal rights to everyone in the society is very crucial so they
could achieve an international reputation.
According to the scholar of social science, the situation has continuously been degrading
in the recent times indeed. The major social and economic values have not been given the proper
attention and the Maori tribes had been completely deprived of the several facilities (Newman

2014). Another important social issue that had been directed by the social experts is the rising of
the violence levels in the society. The biggest worry was the fact that the women and children of
the society were the main concerns for everyone. Therefore, this issue will have to be analyzed
for the betterments of the society indeed (Newman 2014). The rights of the children and women
are under serious threat nowadays in New Zealand and the racial discriminations have been
addressed under this issue as well. Women have been deprived of their rights in spite of the fact
New Zealand was one of the leading countries that allowed the voting rights for women. In the
present times, New Zealand is ranked 36th in preserving the rights for women in the society
(Watene 2016). The studies suggest that New Zealand women are seriously under serious
problems because they have been the victims of gender discrimination in the country.
Few critics have said that large scale organizations in New Zealand have been deeply
involved in preserving the rights of women in the society because they want women to feel safe
in the business environment as well as in the social environment as well (Newman 2014). They
have begun some campaigns to ensure health benefits and well being of women within the
society. Still, the reasons for this kind of discrimination within the society will have to be found.
Women in New Zealand are reported to get unequal payment than men in their workplaces. This
is completely unjustified since people of both the genders deserve to get the similar amount of
wages if they share the similar posts and job responsibilities (Fredman 2017). It is quite unethical
as well. This practice is still going on in some organizations in the country. The United Nations
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) should be the measure stick on how both men
and women in the society will share the equal rights (De Bres 2015). Still, the federal
government has been trying quite hard to apply some government mechanisms through which all
their rights could be preserved and they would get advancement in their rights. Equal pay is one
