Introduction
Pain management is an essential aspect of the recovery process. Pain
during aging often reflects underlying health problems. Among elderly persons,
pain management is an essential aspect of the care management process. Pain
can occur in various forms; acute pain occurs suddenly and lasts for a short
period while chronic pain lasts for a longer duration of time. This study aims at
assessing the use of NSAID-ibuprofen on the management of pain among elderly
person under blood-thinning medication. This study aims to assess the impact of
ibuprofen among elderly on managing pain. To focus on this aspect PICO
framework is being applied to study this phenomenon.
Clinical problem
Pain among older persons is often a common prevalent health problem.
With the continued advances in age, frailty and chronic disease continue to
increase pain levels among the older persons. More often primary care
physicians and health care often experience challenges in managing pain
conditions for the elderly persons (Reid, Eccleston & Pillemer, 2015). The elderly
often experience arthritis, bone and joint disorders, and other related chronic
diseases. It is estimated that about 25%-50% of community-dwelling persons in
nursing homes have increased the occurrence of pain. Geriatric nursing home
elderly persons have an increased rate of occurrence between 45-80% (Nahin,
2015).
Majority of the elderly persons encounter less treatment management for
pain. Consequences and effects on the undertreatment of pain can have
negative effects on the overall quality of health leading to depression, anxiety,
cognitive impairment, sleep disturbances and immobility.most often the health
care professionals can encounter problems associated with pain management.
Various aspects have been attributed to lack of effective training, inadequate
pain assessment and the reluctance of opioids prescription.
Pain classification among elderly persons can be termed as nociceptive or
neuropathic. Pain can be mixed with having both the components. Nociceptive
pain is linked as either visceral or somatic due to painful inflammation on the
