ICT106 DATA COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKS
1. Introduction
The report is prepared for Top Network Company (TNC)for the development of a
network solution. The network solution is designed after a detailed analysis of the building
floor plan of the organization and analysing the number of departments connected in the local
area network. The company have three departments namely administration, marketing and
sales and each of the department is assigned with a separate floor. There are 53 workstation
in administrator department, 106 workstation connected in marketing department and 159
workstation in sales department. Each of the department uses different application and some
of the application have need to transfer data between the departments. Internet connectivity is
needed for each of the department along with intranet, local server and email. Email and Web
server is installed in the ground floor of the organization building. The report is prepared for
designing a local area network for the organization demonstrating all the workstation and
servers installed in the network. The topology that is followed for the development of the
network is analysed for the selection of protocols that should be used for the configuration of
the network device.

2.2. LAN topology and Protocols
A hierarchical network design is used for the configuration of the network and it
follows a three layer model for increasing the reliability, scalability and cost efficient
internetworking solution. It is ideally suited for the small, medium and large sized network
and the design of the network varies based on the needs of the network. For the smaller
network fewer number of network devices are used in the distribution level and the devices
increases with the growth of the network that are connected with the layer 3 device in the
core of the network. The success of the network is dependent on the following engineering
principles such as:
Hierarchy – It is a network model that is useful for designing network framework that
is reliable for transmitting data packets from different source and destination address in the
network. The complex design problem faced for the development of the network is broken
down into smaller manageable areas.

Modularity – The functionality of the network can be separated and the network can
be divided into modules for reducing the complexity in the network design. The are different
service block, internet edge and data centre available that can be added in the network device
for increasing the flexibility of the network.
Resiliency – The network is available for the user under every condition such as
normal and high network traffic condition. In case of software failure, extreme traffic failure
and case of denial of service events the network should be available for normal usage.
Flexibility – The network can be modified from different portions and new services
can be added without having major upgrade on the network.
The network solution for Top Network Company is developed by configuring the
network switch with spanning tree protocol such that the loops cannot be formed in the
network since multiple interfaces are used for reaching the destination address. Multiple
VLAN are created in the layer 3 switch and it is configured with VTP server and switchport
mode trunk such that the VLAN information are transmitted to the other switch connected in
the network. Layer 2 switches are used as the distribution level switches are it is configured
as VTP mode client and the interface that is connected with the layer 3 switch is configured
with switchport mode trunk. The ground floor switch is given access to the admin VLAN and
it gets the IP address from the Admin subnet configured in the router. The first floor switch is
configured with switchport mode access and the marketing VLAN is allowed for the switch
for getting IP address from the marketing pool. The 2nd floor similarly is configured to get IP
address from the Sales VLAN. The configuration of the VLAN helps in reducing the
multicast message in the network and increases the efficiency of the network solution.

4. Conclusion
From the above report it can be concluded that for the development of the network
solution for Top Network Company a requirement analysis is need to be done and an analysis
should be made on the number of subnet required and users per subnet. The application used
by each of the department and the need of transferring inter departmental data is also
analysed for the development of the network. The building floor plan and the network
topology that should be implemented for increasing the efficiency of communication between
the departments is analysed for the development of the network design. The lan topology and
the protocols used for the development of the network is discussed in the report along with
the hardware device that are used for the network. The network device are selected after
analysis of the service requirement and used for the estimation of the budget for the
development of the project.
