The paper aims for discussing the learning outcomes from the topic of “Ideas for
tomorrow” by Michael Porter from a personal perspective. The paper will be discussing on
the major issue addressed by Michael Porter in this video first and after that, the focus will be
shifted on the critical analysis of the views and ideas shared by Michael Porter in the
provided video.
Discussion:
I have learned the concept of the value of healthcare from the discussion provided by
Prof. Porter. All the healthcare organisations are concerned with lowering the cost of the
healthcare services by compromising with either the quality of the care delivered or
increasing the cost for the patients. They are completely focused on incrementing the value of
healthcare delivered. However, they do not understand the definition of the value of care
properly, which according to Prof. Porter should be the health outcomes in the patient per
dollar spent in delivering the patient care (Youtube.com, 2020). The principle problem with
the healthcare organisations these days is that when they are trying to improve the quality of
care being delivered, they are not focusing on the fundamental restructuring but making
improvements only on the smaller fields only, which is not really helping in the long run. The
improvement of the value of healthcare delivered is really important for a healthcare
organisation. The improvements can be made by improving the quality of care delivered and
delivering a proper patient centered care (Youtube.com, 2020). The improvements made to
improve the healthcare value will in turn improve the patient experience. The customer
satisfaction is always the most important factor for any industry, hence this will help in
building a proper reputation for the associated healthcare organisation.

As per my understanding and opinion, Prof. Porter has developed a proper definition
of the value of the healthcare delivered. Any healthcare organisation should always focused
on the best possible care of the patient. This is not only ethical but also linked with the
customer satisfaction, which is the principle factor in building reputation for any business
organisation. It has also been stated in various studies that the improvement of the quality of
care delivered in any healthcare organisation increases the instances of better health outcome
in the patients (Shirley & Sanders, 2016). Hence, I can deduce from the statement that an
improvement in the quality of the care delivered will help in increasing the value of the care
delivered. I think the strategy described by Prof. Porter to lower the cost of the healthcare
facilities is also reasonable. Instead of burdening the patient with higher cost of healthcare
services or lowering the quality of care, the healthcare facilities should focus on improving
the health outcome in the patients in order to lower the cost of the healthcare services. The
procedures to implement this plan is by improving the quality of care delivered and providing
a patient centered care (Cleary, 2016). An increased value of the healthcare delivered will
imply a better patient satisfaction. A better patient satisfaction or customer satisfaction will
attract more customer and that will be working as a positive factor in increasing the monetary
income of a healthcare organisation. As per my best understanding to improve the quality of
care delivered it is very important to make a regular assessment on the patient outcome in
order to check the efficacy of the plan. One of the challenges to measure the outcome
involves the lack of understanding of the importance of this aspect by the organisational
authority. The second challenge is the lack of proper awareness and knowledge within the
healthcare staffs themselves. The staffs do not understand the necessity of the outcome
measurement and they do not know the proper procedure to develop a proper measurement
plan. Another challenge is that there is not really any standard per which the measurement
can be made (Boswell, Kraus, Miller & Lambert, 2015). The measurement of the patient

health outcome is very important in the measurement of the value of the healthcare delivered
as well, which in turn help in measuring the standard of the associated healthcare
organisation.
Conclusion:
Hence it can be concluded that the concept of maintaining a proper value of
healthcare delivered is very important concept, which should be adapted by all the healthcare
organisations. The value of healthcare can be incremented by improving the quality of care
delivered and providing a patient centered care. In order to maintain a proper value, the
measurement of the patient outcome is also a necessity, even though there are various
challenges involved in the process of measuring the outcome.
