1. Brief summary of case study person
Riley Thomas is a 22-year-old adult with skills in computer. He has developmental
disability and vision impairment although he does not feel disabled in any way because he has
been able to make good friends and pursue his interests in life. He has work experience as a
weekend greeter at the Aerospace Museum and as a worker at a day program agency based in
Calgary. Mr. Thomas enjoys surfing the internet and knowing about new things every day. He
has keen interest in learning about different cuisines and history. However, Mr. Thomas is not
very content with his present work because it consumes much of his personal life, as he has to
dedicate most of his time working due to shortage of staff. Mr. Thomas is a keen observer, an
extrovert and benevolent as he loves caring for people. He is a visionary and possesses amazing
skills in handling people. He aspires to become a computer support specialist where he could
communicate with people and learn about their difficulties.
2. Occupation areas suitable for Mr. Thomas
Based on the personal profile and career vision of Mr. Thomas, three occupational areas
have been identified as best suited for him. These include:
Computer user support technician
The duties include providing numerous repair and maintenance services for personal
computers (PCs) and laptops, taking calls from PC or laptop users who experience technical
trouble. The qualifications required for this job range from a bachelor’s degree in IT to post
secondary classes or an associate’s degree in computer.
Accounting technician

The responsibilities of an accounting technician are to maintain methodical records of
business exchanges or transactions and then record and verify those transactions. The minimum
qualification required for the job is a high school diploma and a good hold in computer.
Hotel and Motel Desk Clerk
The duties include greeting people and welcoming them. The desk clerk also has to make
sure that the guests are provided with all the information they need any time in the day.
Minimum qualification needed for the job is a high school degree and good communication
skills, ability to handle people.
Based on the three above-mentioned occupational areas, three industries could be
identified. Therefore, the following labor market research questions have been enlisted:
i. In what way does the demographic factor influences participation in the workforce?
ii. How do the fiscal policies and economic conditions affect the labor force?
iii. Do marital status influence the composition of the labor force?
iv. What type of industry is presently absorbing the labor force?
v. What is the level of skillfulness of the human capital in Canada?
vi. What is the role of the disability community in the labor market in Canada?
vii. What opportunities are there those could trigger the development of the labor pool?
