Drama- title- sun still sets west
Characters- Christopher, Nelly
Act one
[
Living Room, window, couch]
Christopher: (
sitting on the couch with the newspaper and cigarette) All
everybody runs for is money, money and money. Nobody cares about
humanity, eh. Bunch of hooligans!
Nelly: (
ironing Christopher's clothes while humming an old 80’s pop
song) Uh...hun.. I guess people just stopped caring about others.
Christopher: you are being awfully snide with your tone woman! Did you
bring me the cheese I asked for from the supermarket?
Nelly: I don't really think cheese can make you happy. Nothing can
make someone happy when they are disturbed from underneath and look at
you complaining about other people running after money; I'm amazed! Tell
me one thing apart from money that makes you happy!?
Christopher: Right now? Some string cheese would do. It would make me
delighted if you could stop talking.
Nelly: (
pause). (
stops ironing, folds the shirt looking at her
husband) I remember the time when spending time with me used to make
you happy.
[
Silence]
Christopher:. [
Putting the cigarette out in the ashtray] Well, let's face it
Nel, we're old people now. And you even look more old than I do.
Nelly:. We're not old. You're just bored with the same face you see
every morning; the same voice, every morning.
Christopher:. Maybe I am, you know. Maybe I'm being fed up with the
life I'm being offered. But be honest Nelly, aren't you too?
[
Silence]

Nelly: [
turns teg switch off, walks up to Christopher, sits next to
him in a half-hearted manner] Did you know that Mrs. Fitzgerald's son was
caught cheating on his wife?
Christopher: who? You mean Steven?
Nelly: Yes. His wife is filing for a divorce.
Christopher: wasn't she sick?
Nelly:. Yes. She is suffering, but in more than one way. I feel bad for
the young girl.
Christopher: [
taking out another cigarette from his pocket and lights it
without looking at Nelly] well, I for one think that it was inevitable and his
wife should move on from this. (Pause) She can not blame Steven entirely
for his mistake. I think Susan is equally guilty.
Nelly:. [In a sarcastic tone] I think Steven isn't to blame at all.
Christopher:. [Concentrating on the news paper] you think?
[
Silence]
Nelly:. Hey Chris! I was thinking about this for awhile now, wanted to
ask your opinion. (
Pause) Do you think I should start working? Try to bring
in some extra cash in this time of financial distress in the state? Also that
way you'll not be irritated when I ask you for money for shopping and stuff.
Christopher:. (
Still not looking at Nelly) Uhun.. so who would do the
household chores? Who would cook and clean and do the dishes? Coz I'm
not gonna.
Nelly: I was hoping maybe we get a housekeeper to do those?
Christopher:. I don't wanna spend my money on maids.
Nelly:. Then maybe you can lend me a hand while I'm doing my
chores so that we can finish early and leave for our respective workplaces.
Christopher:. No! You don't need to work. I don't want to do the
household chores. Men don't do household. (
Pause). (
Puts out the cigarette)
Nelly:. But.. it'll help the family.
Christopher:. I don't care. If you go against what I said just now. Susan
won't be the only one filing for a divorce.
