CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
a) Background of study
Social media is widely adopted by the youth in 21 century. As per the latest research, it
can be found that there are 89% US users between the age of 18 to 29 years used the social
media in a large level. The speed of social networking sites and network has changes the lifestyle
of people. It can be analysed that most of people access the internet at school, home and
workplace (Zhang, Lu, Gupta and Zhao, 2014). All the social media sites provides a good
platform to make an effective communication with others. On the other hand it also make some
disadvantages such as health problems and habitability of people to surfing the net etc. This
proposal is based on the research which identify the impact of social networking and mental
health of individuals. Hence, it can be said that social networking provides some facility such as
communication, great approach at global level, study and fun etc. for the person. Moreover, it
also make harm on the human health such as eye-problems, heart problems etc. to the person.
b) Problem Statement
This study will try to identify the impact of social networking sites on people's mental
health. Advance technology provides various facility but if it was given to wrong hand it can be
dangerous. The aim of the study is to identify the problems which cause the harm on human's
mental health situation. To analysis this condition, research can be done like to explore the
interest of young people while using the social networking sites. This study includes various
issues such as health problems like heat diseases, frustration, depression, unethical work etc.
which create negative impact on the human's mind (Apter-Levy, Feldman, Vakart, Ebstein and
Feldman, 2013).
c) Research questions
The study addresses the various questions which are as follows:
 In which level social networking are used by the people?
 What are purpose for which people use the social media in a large extent?
 What kinds of problems they face while using the social networking sites?
 Which kind of social networking factors that highly affected the mental situation of
people?

d) Study Objectives
Goals: The major goal of this research is to find out the impact and outcomes of social
networks and mental health specially in youth (Zhang, Lu, Gupta and Zhao, 2014).
Objectives
 To identify the uses of social networking.
 Role of social networking sites and its impact.
 Examine the advantages and disadvantages of social networking sites.
 To find out the outcomes of networking which make positive and negative impact on
person's health and mental situation.
e) Study Contribution
It is hoped that the finding of the study identify the advantage and disadvantages of social
networking sites in human's health. While the study identify the various technology which make
great impact on the person's behaviour. There are numbers of study applied to find out the effects
and numbers of theories are used so that researcher can make effective research on network and
their impact on human's health effectively.
CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
a) Review of literature
Social networking sites is a form of online communication channel by which one person
can communicate with other easily. There are some popular sites such as Facebook, Google+,
Flicker, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, MySpace, YouTube, Picasa, WhatsApp, Skype, Yahoo
Messenger etc. are the various applications which make is useful to make connection with
people. As per Yeager, Johnson, Spitzer, Trzesniewski, Powers and Dweck (2014) a report from
2013 finds that Facebook is most likeable sites which is operated by maximum number of
peoples. It is also analysed that their was high majority of 13-17 years age group people who
uses the Facebook. The ratio of using social networking sites are: Twitter user 33%, Google+
33%, Vine 24% and Tubmler 4%. All the research shows that people mostly use the social
networking sites to communicate more than using their mobile phone. There are many age group
people use this networking sites for communicating with friends, family and strangers around the
world.

According to Wu (2013) In some cases social networking sites are used in great extensive
amount. In present time, 94% users are using Facebook as a way of communication. It can be
said that Facebook is most preferable sites which provides various facility to make interaction
with long distance situated people. On the other hand, It also have some disadvantages that
people are habitual with this site and have no time to make any social relationship. All the photos
and informations are uploaded by the people are easily hacked and misused which make
negative impact on the people's life. Sometime people were in depression due to unethical
activities done by others. As per World Health OrganizatioN (2014) point of view, Regular use
of social networking sites has been proven various causers which make serious negative health
affect on teenagers. Most of teenagers faces "Facebook Depression" which is caused by cyber
bullying and online harassment. Some of people are suffering from serious mental illness and
many teenagers make suicide attempt. Research data shows that 91% people share their photos
and videos publically to make good impression in front of their friends and circle. There are
many situations like 36% of teenagers do not know the friends which they were added in their
friend list. As per Volkow, Baler, Compton and Weiss (2014) all the medical research declared
that teenagers who are regularly using Facebook can develop anti-social personality disorder,
paranoia and anxiety in their behaviour.
As per Oh, Ozkaya and LaRose (2014) there some positive effects of Facebook such as it
brings to youngster new lives and create self-esteem by promoting individuality. Many research
concluded that youngster feel more comfortable by communicating their relatives through social
networking sites. It create motivation in their behaviour by which they can express their thoughts
effectively without having any hesitation. According to Oh, Ozkaya and LaRose (2014) social
networking sites make positive as well negative impact on health of a person. Cyber bulling is
major issues which are faced by the society in present time. Almost 43% youths facing this kinds
of serious problems and leading cause of depression. It is also find that youths are unaware and
uneducated about the effect of internet. As per Mayo-Wilson, Dias, Mavranezouli, Kew, Clark,
Ades and Pilling (2014) there are many people who do not feel any kinds of difficulty to telecast
their personal lives in publically. There are many cases in which child are facing various
problems such as 'sexting and child pornography'.

b) Concepts and theory
According to Li, Liao and Yen (2013) there are various kinds of theories which are used
to identify the impact of social networking or outcomes and mental health. In regards with this,
Gratification theory is used by making any research. It is an approach which mainly focused on
audience that they were using media for achieving their goals or objectives. In this, those media
are used by the researcher which satisfy the need of customers. By using this model, investigator
can find out the users which is highly influenced with the social networking sites. It can be said
that by determining the end users, it can control on negative impact of social networking sites on
people's health. As per Korda and Itani (2013) point of view, Hyper personal model also used to
identify the impact of social networking by making face to face interaction. This approach is
mainly focus on the time in which interpersonal interaction can be done. It is a process which has
combine feature of media attributes, social phenomena and social psychological process by
which face-to-face communication can be done effectively. It can be said that, by using this
model a person can interact with others through meeting so that positive attitude can be
developed by them. Hence, by making personal meeting is beneficial to reduce the depression
issues and cyber bullying that a person faced while using social networking sites. As per Ishii
and Xuan (2014) point of view, it is clear that social networking plays an important role which
provides various facility and sometime it is dangerous to the people and their health.

a) Research design
It is a process which defines the whole strategy which helps to implement an effective
research plan. By using this process, problems can be identified and appropriate action will be
used to resolve all these problems. There are various kinds of research designs which are used to
making a effective survey, these are: Descriptive, coo relational, semi-experimental,
experimental, review and meta-analytic research design (Holt-Lunstad, Smith, Baker, Harris and
Stephenson, 2015). In the present study on social networks and mental health, researcher will use
descriptive design. In descriptive survey method, aim of this process is to present the
phenomenon based on population which is useful in establishing the facts effectively. This helps
in proper and accurate depiction of the participants. This design will be chosen because it will
help in carrying out the research in the most natural ways without changing the environment of
the subjects. Therefore, this will help the researcher in studying the impact of social networks ion
mental health of individuals appropriately. It can be said that if a researcher adopt descriptive
method than all the data is to be developed based on holistic, contextual and depth manner
(Huang, Unger, Soto, Fujimoto, Pentz, Jordan-Marsh and Valente, 2014). All the data and
information are collected in a completed detail form so that it is easily understandable by the
person.
b) Sample and sampling instrument
A sample is a smaller unit which is taken from the population. It is essential for
determining the features of whole population by a small unit. It can be said that sampling is a
process in which individual units is taking for representing the large population in a systematic
manner. Sampling methods can be classified into two parts such as probability sampling and
non-probability sampling sampling. In probability sampling, it includes those activity which
helps to determine the outcomes randomly (Holt-Lunstad, Smith, Baker, Harris and Stephenson,
2015). On the other hand, non-probability sampling included those methods which is totally
based on human choices and actions. In the present study, researcher will chosen purposive
sampling method for conducting a successful research. In this sampling method, unit or sample is
taken as per the characteristics of a population and aim of the study. This is useful to determine

the main impact of targeted area. By using this, searcher will analysed the impact of social
networking and determine the outcomes appropriately.
In this study Sample will taken as per the healthcare professionals in the field of mental
health and Sample size will be 25. In addition to this, sampling instrument includes those tools
by which sampling process can be completed. To identify the impact of social networking on
mental health of individual, questionnaire will be chosen as the instrument. By using
questionnaire, data will be collected as per the view of 25 respondents such as healthcare
professionals in the field of mental health (Hajli, 2014).
c) Research Methodology
i) Data Collection
It is major process of making research methodology of any survey. Data is base of any
research by which all the relevant information are collected which is beneficial for any research.
There are two types of data which are collected such as primary and secondary data. This study
will both the data collection techniques for analysis the information and impact of social
networking on human health. While collecting primary data, it includes all those informations
which are collected in first time. Researcher will collect the primary data by organizing the
survey with the help of questionnaires. In this, informations will be recorded from healthcare
professionals in the field of mental health (George and Ferraro, 2015).
In addition to this, researcher will also use secondary data for collecting the information.
In which they will consider the books, magazines, articles, journals and such informations which
are already collected in a previous research. Both of two data collection techniques will be used
to get sufficient informations about the role of social networking and its positive or negative
impact on the mental condition of a person.
ii) Data Analysis
Analysis of data is a process in which all the collected informations are transform,
modify as per the goals and objectives of a particular research. It includes various facts and
approaches which are used in different level to identify the different needs (Cacioppo and
Cacioppo, 2014). There are two ways by which collected data can be analysed, it may be in the
form of qualitative manner or quantitative manner. In qualitative data analysis, it includes those
informations which is based on their quality, features. For example: Health, disease etc.

On the other hand, quantitative data includes those techniques in which data are analysed
which are expressed in numerical manner. The present study is mainly focus on qualitative data
analysis techniques. Thematic technique will be used by the researcher for analysing the
qualitative data for identifying the impact of social networking on mental health of individuals.
In this process data are analysed as per the theme, signals and symbols. It includes the whole
process into six phases, these are: Familiarization of data, generating initial codes, searching the
right theme, rechecking the theme, defining and naming and at last producing the final report.
Researcher will use thematic analysis process because it is flexible in nature in which
multiple theories can be applied to identify the imp[act on social networking sites. It is also
suitable while dealing in large set of data. It is beneficial for the researcher to expand their
experience and knowledge as per the past performance. BY using this process, themes can be
interpreted with the use of data (Berkman, Kawachi and Glymour, 2014).

important role which make positive or negative impact on human;s life. Above report present the
proposal for making a research to find the outcomes and impact that affect the mental health of a
person. This report describes the various sources of social networking and aspect of metal health
which is related with each other. Furthermore, it also explained the role of social networks and
various tools or techniques by which data will be collected by the researcher. At last, research
design, methods and data analysis process also explained in the report by which a researcher will
be able to understand the impact of social networks in human mental conditions (Apter-Levy,
Feldman, Vakart, Ebstein and Feldman, 2013).
