Analyzing Globalization's Impact: Lasagne Dish & Dublin Docklands

This report investigates the multifaceted impacts of globalization, using the Lasagne dish and the urban changes in Dublin Docklands as case studies. The first part of the report meticulously examines the ingredients of a Lasagne dish, tracing their origins and assessing their environmental impact, including food miles and cultural aspects. The analysis covers ingredient sourcing, transportation methods, storage requirements, and the pollution generated by these processes. The second part focuses on urban change, specifically in the Dublin Docklands. It explores the transformation of the area, highlighting the effects of modernization, including infrastructure development and employment opportunities. The report also addresses the social and economic challenges associated with urbanization, such as displacement and income inequality, providing a comprehensive overview of globalization's complex effects on both food systems and urban environments.

 Parmesan cheese
Lasagnes are flat, wide pasta and one of the oldest pasta. The food is made up of several
layers of sheets of sausage and other ingredients, like mutton or cheese. The food has
originated from the city of Naples, Italy during the middle age.

Environmental impact:
 Beef- It is available in the country itself and need not to be imported from any other
country.
 Ricotta cheese- It is exported from Italy. Italy is exporting 400 million kilograms of
cheese as the demand for Italian cheese has increased over the years. France is the largest
buyer of Italian cheese. The dairy product in Ireland is supplied by Italy, even though
Ireland has a self-production for dairy products(Finnegan et al .2017).
 Egg- It is available in Ireland.
 Dried basil- Basil is imported from India. Ships and airways to Ireland export them
(Raina, Kumar and Dutta 2013).
 Dried thyme- Thyme is exported to Ireland from France. The products can be exported by
road or airways.
 Dried oregano- It is exported from Turkey. Turkey meets 60% of oregano demand in the
world. One of the client country of oregano is Ireland.
 Garlic cloves- India is the largest exporter of garlic clove. It is one of the important bulb
crops in India. Countries like Netherland, France are largest importers of garlic from
India (Topno et al 2013).
 Shredded mozzarella cheese- It is exported from France. France has a huge production of
dairy products, it exports the dairy product worldwide and Ireland is one of its client
countries.
 Spaghetti sauce- Mexico is a large producer for tomato sauce. Ireland imports the
spaghetti sauce from Mexico.

 Lasagne sheets- It is made in the country itself. There is no requirement of importing.
 Parmesan cheese- Ireland has a well-established dairy production in the country itself.
Growing or rearing- Ingredients like garlic clove, basil, thyme, oregano are grown and
preserved. They are processed and then transported to the country. These products are long
lasting and are exported without any problems. Ingredients like beef, egg, do not last for a
longer period and needs to be exported with a short period. Although, Ireland does not face
an issue with this as these products are easily available in the country itself. Ireland imports
two types of cheese from France and cheese also has a limited time span for usage, hence this
has to be considered before importing the product.
Transport- Products like garlic cloves, basil are exported from Asian countries and has to
transported by airways or waterways. Oregano, cheese, thyme are exported by European
countries and can be transported by airways or roads vehicles.
Storage- Products like beef, egg, cheese has to be preserved in refrigerators with a very low
temperature. The products will not last for long and hence it has to be used as soon as possible.
The products like basil, thyme, oregano can be preserved and lasts for a long time.
Pollution fuels used- the export of garlic, clove, thyme, basil, oregano includes the export
through airlines and waterways. As it is known that, the usage of fuels in aircrafts emits harmful
gases to the air and causes air pollution. The cause of air pollution has increased due to the
increase in such advanced technology, which is making the human lifestyle easier. The use of
such technology is increasing the chances of exchange in products as required for this
preparation.

Growing pattern- basil, clove, garlic are without any harmful chemicals used. They do not harm
the nature and are safe for the nature. Egg and cheese are animal products but they do not harm
the animal and is safe for use. They are produced by using very less or no chemicals used in it.
However, beef is also required for this food item and that includes killing of the animal. It is
common in the food cycle to be a secondary consumer hence it is not an unethical act, measures
must be taken to reproduce equal amount of animals that are consumed by humans. Oregano
does not require any chemicals. Few effective measures should be taken for not using any growth
injections to the beef and chicken. Preservatives and chemicals are used in spaghetti sauce and
lasagne sheets.
Food miles- The food mile distance of the Irish dish, Lasagne is 1170 miles (1883km)
considering from the capital of Ireland to the respected countries.
Thus, it can be concluded that the food requires a lot of inter culture interaction for
meeting the requirement. The ingredients are sourcing from different country and culture and
have to import from the different nations. The food enhances globalization as it connects the
countries for meeting the requirement of the food.
Cultural aspects:
The food is a western style food made of wide pasta and an alternate sheet of chicken or
mutton and other ingredients. The food can be made in different style. It is originated from
France and has been modified by different countries as per their food habits and choices. The
food symbolizes a inter culture mixing, as it comprises of different ingredients in it (Kraidy
2017). The ingredients are also changed and altered as per the requirement of the consumer. The
different layers in the food can comprise various ingredients like chicken, mutton, cheese. The

food is a heavy diet for food lovers but can be a bad choice for health conscious consumers. The
health conscious consumers can prepare the dish with vegetables and light weighted ingredient
like green vegetables. If everyone consumes this vegetable then there are chances that
globalization will come to a stagnant position (Kraidy, M., 2017). It is always better to chose
different combination of food to taste and try the different flavour around the world. If it comes
to me as a consumer of this food then it clearly notes that I am food-loving person. I prefer
heavy meals including mutton, cheese and other ingredients. However, lasagne is not an
unhealthy food and can be consumed by everyone. It consists of pasta and alternate layers of
mutton, cheese or chicken which can be an ideal food for lunch or dinner. I had tasted the food in
my cousins house for the first time, since then I am really fond of this dish and keep on
suggesting my friends and family to try this food.

Part two:
Urban change: The term urban change refers to the expansion scale of a developing city or
nation. An urban growth strengthens the planning administration, improve the living
environment, and create a better place for living. This part of the study will discuss about the
urban changes in Dublin Dockland.

Urbanisation is a common factor in every growing nation. As time passes the need for
change is also increases, the same has also happened in the dockyard of Dublin. The previous
industrial structures have undergone a gentrified landscape. They have constructed new
buildings in the areas where there was no indigenous population, which has provided
employment for a section of the society. The employment has proved to be helpful to the
unemployed section of the society (Sinclair 2017).
Modernisation is required in every field of the society including the dockyard. The
development has introduced better equipments and technologies for import and export business,
better equipment for loading and unloading ships, technologies for improving the environment of
the dockyard, living standard and lifestyle of the people living near the dockyard, provided

employment to a section of the society, a check on the pollution emission by the ships(Hanna
2013).
Although the modernisation has improved the style and pattern of work, it also has a
negative impact on the society. A section of the society states that this change has become a
barrier to the area. Debates include the fear of the local residents to be involuntarily replaced
from their original residents. Corruption and misuse of power may lead to displacement of the
residents. The locals also fear that modernisation may lead to a gap among the people with high
income and low income. The modernisation may increase the value of the property and land near
the area and thus it becomes difficult for the low incomers to afford them.
Thus, to conclude there can be many effects of urbanisation, the same happened for the
Dublin dockyard. The dockyard has introduced many new aspects for export and import but at
the same time, there are few issues faced by the locals. It is expected that few adverse effects are
also there in every new change and the same has happened with this place. But it is expected that
with time these issues will overcome.
