IMPACT OF POLICY INFORMATICS ON PUBLIC HEALTHCARE
Current situation of the healthcare system demands the integration of informatics and
modern technology into the health care industry. Support from the health informatics ensures
better healthcare to the patients.
Public policies provide a guideline to the electronic health system, which is helpful
for the professionals to apply health informatics in their profession with more ease.
Government bodies controlling the health sector propose and introduce policies that helps the
health industry to function in a more proficient way. Health informatics provides e-system
that maintains health records electronically (Bell, 2018). The introduction and growth of
Health information technology (HIT) has resulted in more efficient healthcare providers like
nurses. Therefore, safety and care of the patients has also gone up. Informatics has introduced
electronic patient portal system. Electronic medical report (EMR) and electronic health report
(HER) are accessible through the portal which stores medical history and all other clinical
informations about the patients. So HIT has made decision making related to nurses more
data driven and precise that reduces the workload of the nurses and increases the positive
outcomes of patient health (Williams, Oke & Zachary, 2019). Tools like practice
management (PM) software minimizes the stress level of the healthcare professionals. New
therapeutic and diagnostic tools are being developed with the help of health informatics
though sometimes they are not cost-effective and quite time consuming. New HIT models
can be applied where informatics can be used to provide health related interventions to the
patients analogous to the orthodox approaches like drug, diagnostic, devices. By this way,
HIT can be cost effective and endorsed as a precision medicine, which will treat the patients
based on their genetic make up.
The role shifting of HIT is highly recommended to execute the changes with ease.
HIT should be used as an intervention rather than an enabler of traditional diagnosis.

collaborating with the information technologists can be a huge success in the healthcare
industry. Electronic prescribing can be introduced with the help of HIT which can prevent
wasting of time and mix up of prescriptions which occurs during manual prescribing.
Scheduling appointments and medical bill payments can also be easier if informatics is used
in those. It will ensure patience convenience in the healthcare sector. It can be cost-effective
and time saving at the same time. This will result in an enhanced public health in a holistic
manner. Nurses should also be equipped with informatics skills to understand and handle
health informatics to integrate themselves into the system in a better way (Braunstein,
LaVenture & Baker, 2018). Their decision making precision will improve significantly while
easing their workload. This will result in an improved patient outcome (Carrington et al.,
2018).
