Self care is the concept of protecting one’s own heath and maintaining a peace of mind
through various meditations, exercising, healthy food and following practices of a healthy
lifestyle. It is universally believed that in order to take care of people or society, one must first
take care of himself or herself, which also acts as an inspiration for family members as well as
the society (nami.org). People who pay attention to their own emotional and physical health are
to more likely to support and take care of people suffering from mental illness. According to
some experts, self care is people’s action around their emotional, rational, physical, educational,
professional and spiritual well-being that has a reflection on the way people take care of
themselves on the most fundamental level. Self care is the only way to be fit and have a sound
physical and mental health. The thesis statement is based on the fact that self care is extremely
required for a person to be fit since there is a huge growth in the number of sufferings from
various terminating diseases all over the world due to the changing lifestyle and food habits of
people and mental illness, depression and trauma are also at rise.
Self care acts as a medicine for mental illness, trauma and stress. Stress puts a huge
negative impact on body as well as on mind of a person, which reflects his efficiency of
performing daily routine tasks and thinking power. Stress has common physical signs which
include low energy, headache, diarrhea, nausea, aches, tense muscles, pains and insomnia
(nami.org). Studies have shown that early childhood trauma not only impact children but their
parents, families and their education as well (go.galegroup.com). Children also get affected due
to stress or trauma faced by their parents if self care is not considered an important part of life by
them. To protect children from mental illness, they should be given proper treatment instead of
criticizing them for their behavior. “To teach, educators must be able to engage their students,
including the 20 percent who are too hyperactive, impulsive, depressed, panicked or distracted to

listen” (go.galegroup.com). Thus, self care plays a major role in taking care of mental health and
stress management of a person Stress can be managed or reduced by regular meditations,
exercise, relaxation, interaction with people and entertainment which are all a part of self care.
According to studies, it has been found that companion of pets are a good way to tackle mental
health problems (go.galegroup.com). Self care involves people’s reaction to particular stressful
situation and ways of handling it. Children suffering from mental illness should be supported and
taught and children with behavioral issues have to be taken care of.
Self care is extremely needed to protect physical health. Physical health has a direct
impact on mental health of a person. Improving physical wellbeing is the most comprehensive
way in which people can support their mental health (nami.org). Maintaining a good mental
health becomes much easier by keeping the body fit and healthy. A balance in every aspect of
life and living a smooth healthy life demands sound mental as well as physical health without
which people may not be able to succeed in their respective goals of life. A good health can only
be maintained by taking care of the body and mind through various self care tactics. Thus, people
must make choices that are related to taking care of themselves to maintain a healthy lifestyle
considering mental health as well as physical health. This can be done by regularly exercising,
eating well, getting enough rest and sleep, avoiding drugs and alcohols and by practicing
exercises that provide relaxation to the body and mind (nami.org). As quoted by the Child
Trends and the National Center for Children, trauma at early age takes place “when a young
child experiences an event that causes actual harm or poses a serious threat to the child’s
emotional and physical well being” (go.galegroup.com). Thus, to the physical health of people
greatly affects due to traumatic experiences. The effects of such traumatic experiences on
physical health can be reduced by practicing self care habits such as mediation and relaxation.
