IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON COMMUNICATION
1
Impact of Technology on the Communication Process
Technology has changed the way people interact and initiate the communication process
through the encoding and decoding of the message. This digital communication has affected the
interpersonal skills such as showing of emotions and communicating through non-verbal
gestures (Junco, Mastrodicasa, Aguiar, Longnecker, & Rokkum, 2016). Here, the essay
has discussed the ways by which technology has improved communication and public speaking
skills. Also, the difficulties faced by the listener.
I think technology has improved communication and public speaking skills as it provides
the good opportunity for the listener and speaker to communicate without the barriers.
Technology has come up with online ways of communication in which the people can
communicate more easily and by increased ease. This can simultaneously improve the public
speaking skills as technology provides the platforms for the communication in which the speaker
can communicate more easily and reach to a larger audience through the social media and
internet access (Alhadlaq, 2016).
Besides, it is also seen that technology has made it difficult for the listener in which
listener is unable to interpret the information which is being initiated by the speaker. On the
online communication medium, listener faces difficulty in the understanding of the emotional
meanings attached with the message being sent. Listener later face the difficulty in getting the
clear meaning of the message and faces misunderstanding of the feelings of speaker. The listener
under the online communication suffers from the lack of identity and miscommunication of the
ideas (Lee, Son, & Kim, 2016). Also, semantic barriers can arise when the listener is receiving
or getting the message online in which, the lack of language proficiency and misinterpretation of
the symbols can impact the communication process.
Technology has become more effective in the communication of my daily life which can
be seen from the example wherein I had used online communication channel for the
communication. I had used the social networking site for the communication with the people and
spread my message to large number of people. The digital technology is the effective way for the
communication in which the geographical barriers can be removed and the message can easily be
reached and communicated regardless of the distance between the sender and receiver (Glockler
