social workers. The reason for selecting this topic is to understand the principles and values of
social worker who is supporting the parental alcohol misuse that impact on development of the
children (Romero-Martínez, Figueiredo and Moya-Albiol, 2014). The reason for choosing this

The literature search strategy is an organised structure which is used to search for a database.
This strategy combines all the key concepts of the research question in order to achieve correct
and accurate results. The keywords describes the important and crucial words which are found in
the whole research or thesis. The key words used here are social worker, alcohol misuse, child
development etc. The anti oppressive practices are referred to as interdisciplinary approach
which focuses on the abolishment of the socio economic oppression.

the chapter one will outline the brief introduction of the study that is the scope, background,
rationale of the whole study about the role of social worker while supporting children with
parental alcohol misuse and the impact it has on child's development. The next chapter will
outline the views of different authors that is the literature review on the role of the social worker
in supporting the children. Further the next chapter will outline the application of different types
of theories to real practices. This is done by applying some case studies and examples to the
study. In the last chapter it will be concluded that social workers play very important role which

for children but support their parents also to eliminate the misuse of the alcohol which is
influencing behaviour and growth of child. Communication with children of social worker is
done with the motive of providing support to the children by providing right guidance and
providing the treatment and care the substances which leads to misusing the alcohol by the adults

services and the other agencies contact with the family and try to understand the responsibilities

problems. Drinking of alcohol by parents have direct as well as significant effect on health and
development of children. Substance Misuse by parents have adverse effect on the development
of child. Some risk factor which is associated with drinking of alcohol by parents is high threat
of negligence, domestic abuse, mental difficulties etc. As the concentration of the parents is
mainly on obtaining alcohol or drugs (Kaye, Davenport and Perkins, 2018). The capacity of
parent to retain control on their children is impaired by the adverse effect of alcohol, this is the
main reason because of which parents doest not have much potential to pay attention on basic
requirements of their children. Such types of issues can also have negative effect on health of
children. It can also have adverse influence on the mental as well as physical condition of
children. Parents by adopting the bad habit put their children at high risk of sexual abuse. There
are many proof which shows that high level of parents dependence on drugs can give to the
likelihood of their own children using harmful substances (Finan, Simpson, Schulz and et.al.
2018).
There is a case of Mary Ryan, who was a child whose parents used to misuse substances
because of which She has to bear mental pressure which was created by her friends. Due to
increase in the mental pressure by the society as well as friends, Mary also stated taking the

drugs which further has negative effect on her health (Ma, Grogan-Kaylor and Klein, 2018.).
The different issues which has been faced by Mary as her parents were misusing substance are
emotional stress, impaired attachment, economic hardship etc. All these issues have adverse
effect on her mental as well as physical health. These issues are faced by Mary as she is
emotionally attached with her parents. The attachment theory is based on the assumptions that it
is the relationship which serves as communication between family members.
As per the attachment theory, when child takes birth, they develop primary relationship
with their mother. This hypothesis also states that such relationship of child with mother might
not subsequently serve relationship throughout the life cycle. According to the attachment
theory, children relationship with mother creates a subsystem within big family system. It is a
theory which states that children learn to communicate through their relationship with other
members in a family. During the infant age, children used to communicate by expressing their
feeling through symbols such as crying, clinging etc. The way their parents or care providers
respondents to their needs form the basis of relationship as well as attachment. If children
parents or care provider have positive response towards their needs then children feel secure
attachment (Afzelius, Östman and et.al., 2018).
In context of Mary, as her both parents were engaged in misusing the substances and they
have negative response towards the needs of their child, this factor has lead to the insecure
attachment between Mary and her parents. Due to the insecure attachment with parents Mary has
to face the different issues such as high level of depression, anxiety and failure to thrive. All
these issues has negative effect on Mary physical as well as mental health. In context of case
study of Mary, her parents used to make huge investment of money on treatment for getting
recover from effects of substances, theretofore they did not get a time to built their healthy and
secure attachment with their child. The attachment theory also states that quality of attachment
with the parents which has been build during the time of infancy have significant impact on their
potential to built healthy attachment with their children (McGovern, Smart and Kaner, 2018).
It has been demonstrated from the case study that if in case children are exposed to the
substance misuse by their parents, then there is greater risk that those children also have to face
mental as well as Physical problems. There are possibility the children whose parents are
dependent on alcohol can also become addictive to substance misuse.(Daley, Balogh and
Toscaloni, 2018.).

In context of wider family, the substance misuse effect children and also relatives. Such
issue can effect the partners, family members, grandparents etc. Due to the parents dependents
on the alcohol, children living in wider family lose their relationship with other family members.
In case of Mary, her grandparents provides supports as well as care to Mary, as both parents
were misusing the substances. Her grandparents has encouraged Mary's parents to take
treatment. This case study demonstrate that grandparents played the role of social workers in
persuading the parents to take treatment.
The other case study is a child name Samantha belonging to the latency age who
observed her father drinking excessive alcohol, after drinking she saw her father falling sick and
being dead. After seeing all these she has forced her mother to minimize the drinking of alcohol.
Samantha has taken all the efforts to support her mother in overcoming the addictiveness of
consuming the alcohol. Samantha has taken initiative for supporting her mother to overcome the
substance use disorder as she wants to protect her family from the serious consequences. The
family system theory is based on the assumption that procedure of the feedback is the way
through which the attachment relationship between the parent and children are built. Family
system theory also states that high level of boundaries are there between parents and children
where the parents are depended on the alcohol as parental subsystem does not function properly.
Family system theory also states that healthy boundaries are very much essential in context of
development of children as well as family.
In both the cases, the social care can support children and families by adopting the system
based theory. In addition to this, by implementing the trauma informed as well as attachment
approaches, social workers can provide therapy to an individual or family members of a person
who is misusing the substances. While implementing the practices, it is very much essential for
social worker to consider two crucial factors; these are multi generational trauma as well as
substance abuse. In context of case study of Mary, social workers has provided Mary parents
with Home therapy and supported them in more effective in context of parental supervision

worker, if the parents are taking alcohol then it also shows in their personality as well and
therefore, it is the situations which influences the personality traits. Even the theory also states
that both personality and behavior are connected with each other. In context of the case study of
Samantha, she has supported her mother in changing behavior as well as developing the positive
attitude. In the same way, it also focuses on the response of an individual to a particular stimulus
In the environment as well. Therefore, the response is also considered an automatic in the part of
an individual with no cognitive interpretation (Peck and Whitlow, 2019). Therefore, the same
thing is also happening with parents and children development. The theory states that the
personality trait of parents also affect the development of children in negative way. The behavior
as well as habits of parents have adverse effect on the development of child. Bad behavior as
well as habits of the parents can put their child into troubles which can further hinder their
children development.
Being a social worker, It has also been analyzed that misusing of alcohol by parenting
affect the growth and development of a child. Because it has been analyses that if mother takes
an excessive amount of alcohol then it creates negative impact upon the body of mother and as a
result, it affect the growth of the child as well and there may be a chances of death too. In order
to cope up with this situation, the social worker should provide different training sessions to
parents and play therapy that helps to cope with this situation and as a result, prevent them from
causing negative impact upon a child (Kline, 2015). Apart from this, the theory also emphasizes
the effects of an environmental contingencies that is also based upon the frequencies. It can be
evaluated that when one person in a family start changing that will also affect the entire family
system. Thus it is also helpful for the to think for a family in the same case of a mobile. Such that

they are respond to a change in their individual as well. Thus, the theory states that the
behavioral traits of a parents if they are misuse alcohol, it do affect the entire family system in
negative way.

From the present analysis, it can be concluded that social workers play very important
role which helps to support children in different ways to meet with people at different point that
motivate and support them. They are believed that support and motivation towards the change of
behaviour for children support with eliminate misuse of alcohol that are impact on children in
negative way. Furthermore, it summarised about misuse of alcohol by patent that can create
negative impact in lifestyle of children. This is because, they are generally seeing their parents to
use alcohol which is it lead and interpret in wrong way that majorly create issues and problems.
In this regard, it can be stated that family is primary source which considered attachment and
socialisation. Each and every member need to significantly considered substance due to
individual misusing substance in whole family.
Moreover, it can be articulated that in context of drinking alcohol by parents can have
adverse impact on development of child. There are certain risk factors associated with drinking
alcohol which is main reason because of parent not take potential attention towards their
children. In this regard, it can be depicted that children relationship with their parents also get
impacted due to many negative influences on people. In this way, care providers respondents
with proper take care to solve issues that are related with healthy program. With this
consideration, it has been analysed that social workers support many people who are negatively
influence with their own or someone responses. In this consideration, it can be stated that adult
people are generally liable to be working in this sector in appropriate manner. Therefore, it helps
to lead in services that helps to reduce misuse of alcohol drinks by adults.

From the present analysis, it can be recommend that social workers need to take proper
support with children development so that appropriate functioning in this has been analysed. In

this consideration, it can be stated that misuse of drugs and alcohol highly impacted on children
development so government of the country should take certain steps to set rules and regulations
that helps to lead with conduct research and development. In this regard, it is important to
increase scope that are generally related with determine social workers practices with support for
children with parental alcohol misuse. It is also effect within child development in UK. Along
with this, proper take care of children with reducing negative behaviour with them also helps to
considered reason of change. As a result, it brings additional problems and tension which bring
unpredictability and instability of the home environment.
In order to look for children development, it can be stated that within UK, it is essential
to provide proper caring to them. In this regard, it can be stated that negative behaviour can be
successfully reduced with bringing new and innovative way to take attention of children.
Furthermore, parents spend more money on their enjoy and taking alcohol, etc. Therefore, they
should require to focus on their children care and lead with consideration of proper caring. Due
to unconscious mind they are negatively impacted on children and vulnerability occur so that it is
essential to solve this problem to reduce misuse of alcohol.
REFLECTION
From this study, I have learned that social workers plays important roles for supporting
children with parental alcohol misuse and the effect it has on child development in the UK. I
have learned that different social practices like individual and group counselling for supporting
children with parental alcohol misuse which impact on development either physical or mental
health and development in the UK. With this, I have understood that misuse of alcohol highly
effected on the health and development, so that social workers help to them. I have learned that
almost 1.3 million children living with parents in the UK which misuse alcohol in the UK.
With this, I have learned that social workers support to improve health and welfare of
children and their parents who are misused substances like alcohol and drugs. I have learned that
many of risk are occurred from the misuse of substances by children and their parent. I have
understood that interrelationship between social worker role and parental alcohol misuse that
impact on children development in the UK. I have learned that different ways help to decrease
parental alcohol misuse can be diminish for child development. I have learned that different
theories help to achieve the aims and objectives of study.

I have understood that social worker plays and many roles and they have many
capabilities which support child development as well as improving their health in the UK. I have
learned that social workers work daily activity such as ethnicity, physical, learning and mental
ability, health and welfare of children and parents. I have understood that parental alcohol misuse
destroy and disrupts the lives of kids and families in all regions of society, spanning all social
classes. I have learned about the different theories such as system theory as well as attachment
theory. By developing the understanding about such theories I came to know about the way
substance use disorder of parents effect s the development of children. I gained the knowledge
about the issues faced by children due to the misuse of substances by parents. In addition to this,
I developed the understanding about the way social workers in non-addiction setting can assist an
individual or their families in overcoming the specific issue. I learned about the system based
theory which stated that social workers or family members can change the behaviour of
individual by supporting them. I developed the understanding about the way parents actions as
well as behaviour effects the child. I also came to know about the difficulties which are faced by
the parents due to the misuse of substances. I also developed the understanding about the way
relationship are formed between parents and child. I learned about the strategies which can be
utilised by parents for strengthening their bond as well as attachment with their children. I also
learned that ineffective as well as poor communication can effect the relationship between
children or parents or caregivers. I also learned about one phenomenon that is paterntified
children, such type of phenomenon takes place in case where care givers or parents fails to full
fill the needs as well as demands of children. In such phenomenon, children generally begins to
parent themselves. Such type of Phenomenon is also referred to as reversal of dependence need
phenomenon.
