1LITERATURE REVIEWTeenage suicide has been one of the leading concern in every nation and the prevalence hasincreased to such an extent that WHO had to intervene. WHO had stated that teenage suicide isbecoming one of the most important health concern and initiatives have to be taken to find themain cause behind such occurrence. Social media has been long associated with teenage suicideas a contributing factor but the way how it influences teenage population to get vulnerable or thereason about how social media is acting as a factor for victimization of adolescent was notknown. It is therefore extremely important to identify the procedure and the factors by whichsocial media is acting as the destroyer of teenage lives. The research question that needs to be sethere for the research proposal is, “How the different components of the social media is intriguingthe teenagers to end their lives and are increasing their prevalence of suicide.”Over the years, different researchers have tried hard to establish the connection with social mediaand that of teenage suicides. The most important factor that had been identified by the authors isthe growing amount of information which becomes readily available to the teenagers life whenthey are active on social media. Luxton et al., (2012) had evaluated various platforms regardingteenager suicide and are of the opinion that increasing circulation of information on the socialmedia is making the teenagers more vulnerable; making them knowledgeable about the waysthey can end their lives. Authors such as Mok , Jorm and Pirkis (2015) have conducted extendedresearch to collect statistics about the prevalence of teenage suicide over the years and also in thedifferent nations. They have come to the conclusion that with the advent of time and with thedevelopment of social media, more information is shared and therefore it is making the teenagersvulnerable. They have impulsive minds and tend to be obstinate in their approaches to life whichmake their choices in lives vulnerable. The authors have correctly tried to understand theirpsychology which had been exposing them to such destructive decision in lives. They are of the
2LITERATURE REVIEWopinion form their research, that industrialized nations are facing higher concerns as theprevalence had been higher in these nations.Bossarte and Caine (2008) have established an interesting correlation between the release of appsand the associated increase of rates of teenage suicides in accordance with it in the same years. Inorder to do so, he has picked up the release of the renowned application of social media calledthe face book. They have identified that the launch of the Facebook app in 2004 reflected adramatic increase of suicide rates which had really made the researchers conscious about thepsychology that play in their head when they commit suicide. It has really become veryimportant to understand the psychology behind the increasing vulnerability of the population ofthe teenagers towards suicide. Only then, the national bodies can take important initiatives tostrategically stop such behaviors. The authors had connected the growing prevalence with theside effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor called SSRI as one probable reason thataffects the psychology of teenagers making them vulnerable. However other factors also need tobe assessed before reaching a conclusion to it.One of the most interesting researches which were conducted by Fu, Chan and Ip (2014) hasprovided enlightening information to this literature review. They are of the opinion thatinformation regarding suicide is not alone responsible for increasing the vulnerability of ateenager to suicide. An associated factor of cyber bullying has been found out to be an additionalcause which forces an individual to end his life. It has been found that more the time theteenagers spend on the social media applications; they get more subjected to the increasingtendency to be blown away or be cyber bullied which in turn results in committing suicide. Thework of the author had correctly correlated the instances thereby providing a high amount ofinformation to help the psychologist to further conduct their researches to find solutions to them.
