WEEK 2 your draft mind map and how it relates to your industry topic/issue;
Expatriation, as a business term this word often invites conspiracy. One can always find a
contradictory set of reporting connected to Expatriation. However, stakes are always high and
a company is duty bound to figure out the right reasons for a failure. The complexity of the
problem and the ambiguity associated with it enticed me to pick it as the topic of my
endeavor.
A variation in the findings of a PEST analysis can be a big reason behind the expatriate
failure. Most of the companies understand their native markets well. During the phase of an
expansion, they try to replicate similar success models in other countries as well. Primary
study of the management and consumer behavior says that every market in a different country
is an outcome of the social culture and the traditions. The culture in Europe may have some
similarities in the term of consumer behavior; however when we compare the same with the
USA or South Asian countries then the things change drastically. Apart from the countries
and regions, this segmentation is also applicable to the topography and demography of
different places. In order to mitigate the risk factors a proper pest Analysis and an in-depth
research into the demographic and topographic details of the area is very necessary.
The impacts of the expatriation end up in a complete loss for any endeavor. It kills the
business cycle. In normal cases, a business can boom after a bust, however, in the case of an
expatriation, the business comes to a standstill and sometimes they need to fold it in between.
On the scale of an empathy canvas, we can take the resort in the case of an employee that
became a victim of one such exercise. They end up losing their gains because of an
expatriation failure. They end in painful condition because he lost the quality of life that he
earned during the first few years of their career. Another factor is connected with the
appraisal. Suppose any such employee goes to search for a new job, now once again they will
treat him as a teammate of a team that was a loser.
Nothing fails like a failure; the same thing is applicable to the exercise of finding the reasons
behind an expatriate failure. Over-ambitiousness of certain companies can be considered as a
major reason behind it. Japanese auto giant Toyota has a remarkable record of working as per
the demand and supply cycles of the market. It happens because they follow a Just In Time
manufacturing model. They can adjust their resources and inventory in accordance with the
1

demands. Even in the case of a failure of the rate of difference between the expected values
and the expatriated values may remain on the lower side. Many companies may deny this
initial caution during the launch of a product or while setting the targets. It is true that
Product life cycles of various products are shrinking, however, a concept like beta testing of
the products are giving them a desired lease of time to experiment and revise their
projections.
An expatriation is a number of big companies; no big companies accept that they failed in the
planning. The burden of the failure often transmits on the bottom layer. We can understand it
with a positive example. Tata India Limited is a reputable company in the field of the
automobile; they launched an economic car of the world under the brand name Tata Nano.
This car failed because of wrong brand perception. Chairman of the Tata India Limited
gracefully accepted the Expatriation of their think tank. How many times we hear such
confessions coming from the side of the head and honchos of a multinational giant. This is
why we can say that on the scale of empathy canvas the presence of expatriation is a pain for
most of the stakeholders.

While dealing with a complex subject like Expatriate failure one has two think on a
multidimensional level. In the current diagram, we can establish the probable reasons from
above the line activities like PEST results and planning. After the identification of the
problem, we can always keep a check on the operational planning and mitigate the processes
that can cause the problem. On the bottom line of the mind map, I am expressing my concern
related to the impact of the Expatriate failure on the bottom line of the operations. It is very
important to conceive every problem as a model. A mind map where we draw a model has
the potential to ease out the process of the problem identification. After this identification
process, we can move up to the next level where we identify the key result areas of the
problem-solving.
