1IMPLEMENTATION OF MANAGERIAL FUNCTION I was an intern at the JustWrite Pens who specialize in creating customized pens for the users. The internship lasted for 2 months. After the first month, I was assigned the responsibility to lead the field sales team of the company. My team was responsible for the southern block of Campbell town. I was chosen as the leader of the team since I have been working as an intern for a month and also because the person who was previously assigned the leadership opted out of the internship program. The team consisted of ten people and I was hardly acquainted to them. It is considered that introverts generally refrain themselves from people (Kalra and Manani 2013). However this event required me to adapt to the need of the situation even though I consider myself an introvert. The monthly target of the team was to initiate sales of fifty units of the fountain pens. I had to plan accordingly. I felt the need for delegation of the sales people to perform more effectively. Delegation is said to lead to better performances (Hooghe and Marks 2015). I consulted my superior and decided that there would be teams of two who would be covering different blocks of Campbell town. I decided that the teams would consist of two types of sales personnel. One with the ability to talk and convince and the other who is good in demonstrating the product. During the first week the output of the team was negligible. We barely managed to initiate the sale of two units of the product. This called for a change or the need for devising a different approach to the situation. A team member informed be that the sales initiation of the two units came from two elderly retired men. Furthermore, they were supposedly surprised on getting to know that fountain pens can be customized. This gave me an idea which involved the sales team targeting people of that demographic for the next week as I was aware of demographic segmentation.
2IMPLEMENTATION OF MANAGERIAL FUNCTION Segregating targets on demographic basis gives the marketers ageneralized idea about the portion of the market that they need to target (Dietrichet al.2015). Our targets would be retired and elderly people. The partial success with this demographic made me try out this plan. It was met with great success and the team managed to initiate sale of forty units. I had to implement my understanding of the management functions in order to deal with this task scenario. I had to set the plan, organize how the plan would be carried out, show leadership in taking decisions and delegation and I had to take control of the whole task. I had to respond to adversity when the team was not being able to meet the requirements. The internship helped me to a great extent in developing better understanding of managerial functions in the actual field an helped me determine the effective ways to implement planning, organizing, leadership and controlling in work and decision making. The management functions are created for the purpose (Griffin 2013). However I feel that the team would have been able to meet the target if I had planned to take inputs from all the members of the team. In that way a better plan might have been proposed. Overall I think that the task was a success and the learnings that I had will go a long way in shaping my managerial abilities in the future.
